LOS ANGELES - Johnny Ramone, guitarist and co-founder of the seminal punk band "The Ramones," has died. He was 55.

Ramone died in his sleep Wednesday afternoon at his Los Angeles home surrounded by friends and family, his publicist said. He had battled prostate cancer for five years, and was hospitalized in June at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Ramone, born John Cummings, was one of the original members of the Ramones, whose hit songs "I Wanna be sedated" and "Blitzkrieg Bop," among others, earned the band induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

That only leaves one original member of the band now (Tommy). First Joey, then Dee Dee, now Johnny. The Ramones were the greatest rock and roll band to be stonewalled out of success by the shortsighted powers that be at radio who preferred to spin crap by Journey, Styx, and REO Speedwagon at the time. They never had a hit record but there never would have been groups like Green Day, Nirvana, or countless others without the Ramones blazing that trail first. Their look and sound has become so iconic over the years. They were also one of the few rock and roll bands that combined humor with their music; many of their songs are hilarious, like "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" and "The KKK Took My Baby Away".

I realize the Ramones don't have alot to do with soul music or appeal to it's fans, but I loved them and I appreciate the opportunity to express that here.
Rest in Peace, Johnny, and God Bless the Ramones.

I'm a big Ramones fan. Tightest garage band I ever heard.

A few months ago, I taped a few songs off of their greatest hits CD to play for the girls in the van. In addtition to Soul, they like many other kinds of music, so I thought I'd introduce them to a little subversive rock tthis fine morn. "Rock and Roll Radio", "Sheena is a Punk Rocker", and "I Wanna Be Sedated".

"Sedated" is playing for about 10 seconds when PrincessD(who I might add, at 6 would give anyone a run for their money on 'Name That Tune') chimes in, "Hey I heard that in Daddy Daycare". Subversive? I think that added 20 grey hairs to my head.

Some of my other unmentioned Ramones faves are:
Teenage Lobotomy
Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment
Bop Till You Drop
We're A Happy Family
