As some of you know, I am a teacher and I like to teach kids about their musical heritage. Today during lunch break, I challenged some students to hold a note as long The Dells lead singer Marvin does on the remake of "Stay in My Corner". Marvin holds the note for about 30 seconds without a breath and it is INCREDIBLE! Not one student could hold the note as long as him but they kept trying. The good news is that most want to borrow my Dells CD as they like the song and want to hear others. Even better news is that one boy asked if I have any old Isley Brothers CDs and then a girl asked about who sings "If You Don't Know Me By Now" as she loves that song. A little old music can go a long way! |

Satipe I have the album which this version appears on. Is it "whatever turns you on"? Great album. This is wonderful that you are sharing the music with younger folks at school. Keep it up. |

Satipe...I'm a teacher also. I don't teach music, but I do use it as an integral part of my coursework. That Marvin Junior challenge sounds great, and I think I'll "borrow" your idea. Thanks for sharing that experience. My students are first through fifth graders and I am always amazed at how familiar they are with many of the classic R&B tunes that I fire up for them on the old boom box. |

Satipe, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes featuring Teddy.......sings "If You Dont Know Me by Now". Check out the thread African Fest 2004 in Chicago and theres a photo of Marvin singing Stay in My Corner, which was taken a couple of weeks ago...... He can still hold the note........!!! Ali Woodson formerly of the Tempts would try those extended notes as well, probably his longest note was on a track entitled "Touch Me"..I dont remember how long it was but he hits an upper register and holds it for a heck of a long time ........ PS : Satipe I am familiar with your work and have been for several years, not only here but when you first posted on another web site about your endeavors and as Marvin said.....Teach the Children.......talk to you soon. I teach middle school (social studies) and many of the kids like the music of the 50s, 60s, 70s. It should not be referred to as "oldies music" because they don't remember it from those decades. Good music still has a place with future generations. |

Hi! Here are Marvin's comments about the holding of that note: "That was Carl Davis' idea. We've had success twice by re-recording. We recorded Stay In My Corner twice and we recorded Oh What A Nite twice, so he thought enough time had passed for us to do another version of Stay. On stage with that one note I have sometimes gotten close to 40 seconds." Best regards Heikki |
