The way she rips into the last chorus of "If I Could Be With You" gets me all rumbling inside. That's my fave.

I have a few by the great Lady
a mate has all her records, the early Okeh 78's are superb. He called his dog 'Ca dy' after a Maybelle 45.
I love all her stuff,'black is black' superb vocals as with all her work.
Mike this Lady with Bessie Smith plus Esther Philips are big faves for me.

Her album on Scepter is very good. After years of trying to win it on ebay, I bought it at a NYC record show this summer for $35.

Of course, her record CANDY is a classic.

Big Maybelle was a friend of the family, having being a running partner of 2 of my eldests sisters, the eldest being gone now...I just remember her touching my face and calling me cutie...She would come and sing at the Tar Heel Lounge on 8th avenue in Harlem where my Aunt was a barmaid one time...

'Candy' has got to be my favorite, although anything else she sang could just about move me...

Good thread Chancellor, as always, evoking memories of childhood...

Oh, for sure it's "Hound Dog"! Elvis should've
left this one alone.

"Hound Dog" was Big Mama Thornton not Big Maybelle.

I really dig her versions of "96 Tears" and "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean".

Maybe Randy was referring to WHOLE LOT OF SHAKIN' GOIN' ON. Didn't Big Maybelle record that before Jerry Lee Lewis?

Mabel Smith was a born stage performer, she really knew how to interpet a lyric, quite an actress too. Her live stage show was something to behold (See my post under "Artist's Greatest Stage Performances" Thread)!!
Mabel for both 'Jimmy & Myself' is one of our most favorite female vocalists with a ballad. And to me the one who could phrase like Jimmy, only in her own voice. She was a storyteller of life like him. They often performed on the same bill back in the 50's, sometimes trading off each others songs from night to night, she would sing his "I Won't Cry Anymore" or "So Long" and he would sing her "Candy". She was a big gal with a very big talent.
Some of my Big Maybelle faves are:
"You'll Never Know"
"Torchured"
"Lord, What Are You Doing To Me"
"I Won't Cry Anymore"
"I'll Understand"
"If I Could Be With You"
of course "Candy", to name a few!!:-)
S.S.

Rosie McCoy also wrote some of Jimmy's song's from the 50's
such as "Everybody Needs Somebody" which Jimmy still sings in his show at times.
Here is Rose Marie McCoy October 2003:

Brother Love, "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean" was a Ruth Brown tune, on Atlantic. Maybelle is sooo great -- what a voice! "Candy" is a Beautiful performance! How about the wonderful guitar of Mickey Baker(of Mickey and Sylvia fame)? I dig Ruth Brown too, and saw her live several times, in fact Alberta Adams & I shared a limo with her in Memphis not too long ago.

Quitting Time was a great groove...you knew there was no way anyone was gonna stop her leaving!!Showed she could handle a funky straight soul mover as well as rnb and jazz.
