1970 was the year I started to collect this great music. a big part of the early years of collecti' was all the obscure uk issued 45s that were played at the clubs. So for our stateside posters heres the stuff that I Have either still to this day or did have. Still have a lot that are still to be put to my files, but heres a few of my early records,uk style.......... mel |

Hi there Mel. Interesting to see that "Sweet Thing" was released as THE SPINNERS ... not as the "DETROIT SPINNERS" or "MOTOWN SPINNERS" like their later releases. I used to have an original U.K. Atlantic release of "I'll Be Around", and it too was credited as just "THE SPINNERS". I'd be intesested to know the full story of how ( or why ) E.M.I. started to release them as THE DETROIT SPINNERS. I know that it was to prevent confusion with the Liverpool based folk group called THE SPINERS who had a BBC T.V. variety show at the time. But I've often wondered if there were threats of law suits etc. at the time. Anyone know for certain. Roger. Incidentally Mel, I'm green with envy at some of those scans .. the only one of those 45s I have is THE TAMS, but that made the U.K. charts so it can't really be considered as "rare". According to my sister people used to sing "Be Young, Be Foolish but be Careful" when that got played in the clubs in Sheffield in 68/69!! |

Just curious, Mel--is there a rarer UK release of an American soul record than the Darrell Banks on London? Also, what would you say is the rarest UK soul record? Ray Merrill? Soul Joe Clements? Or something else? Best, Mark |
