I guess you can tell I don't go to the movies much, but I took my girls to the movies yesterday, (Princess Diaries 2 very cute movie by the way..) and I wanted to scream when we had to sit throught 20 minutes of commercials!!!! Car commercials..."what's new this fall on NBC", candy commercials...public service announcements...then after all of that...15 more minutes of previews...
Remember the good old days when you would get 2 previews and the typical "please don't talk during the movies" PSA's and they would maybe pass a cup around for the Will Rogers Foundation? GEEE!!! If I wanted commercials I would stay home!
Just had to to get it off my chest! No wonder I just wait for the movie to come out on dvd.

Oh plus the mother with 5 kids, and the baby kept crying through half of the flick...

Does anyone agree?????

Besides sitting through endless trailers for other films, I hate parents who bring underage children to rated R films.

jrlo,

How was the flick...I'm thinking about taking my girls (5 and 6). If you don't want to post it here, pls email me.

They want to see Baby Genuises 2, and I'm trying to avoid that like the plague. Since taking them to flix accounts for 90 percent of my theater going, I can't really comment on the world of adult movie going.

What about the people who talk at the screen? As if the actors on screen can really hear them?

"Girl, you better get outta there, he right behind you!!"

My sister did this once when we were teenagers and the gentleman (who had the misfortune of sitting in front of us) very politely turned around and asked her to "please, shut-up".

She got all mad and started to talk about him under her breath "I don't know WHO he think he talkin' to"

But I told her "Ahhh shut up, he's right."

jrlo, you should have asked for a refund or told the manager that you were not able to enjoy the movie, because the lady brought her crying baby!
I'm quite sure they would have compensated you one way or another(maybe free passes to another movie). People need to be more considerate and realize that other people are paying their money to see a movie and not be interrupted by noise.
The only good thing about trailers is that, if you don't get their on time, you won't miss the movie, because they show so many-LOL! Unfortunately they have transferred it to dvds and vhs for home viewing too! At least when you are at home, you can fast forward-:-):-):-). It is nerve racking when people talk during movies and cell phones go off, when that happens, you just want to make an I Dream Of Jeannie move and make them disappear-LOL!!! I haven't been to the movies in over a year, most of the time I don't have any problems, but the things you listed are tops!
Back in the day you used to be able to see two movies for the price of one, now it costs to freakin' much to see one movie and even matinees are getting expensive(not to mention popcorn, drinks and candy) and please don't let the movie be bad, then you are really upset!!!
I usually take my own candy and drink in my purse and just buy the popcorn:-):-):-):-)

Hi Destruction!!
The movie was really cute, to me it was better than the first. The ONLY thing I noticed and it may go over your kids heads if this is a concern of yours. In one scene they were sitting in a room looking at potential suitors for the princess..they showed pictures of Prince William other royals etc..when they put the picture up of one royal..all the women said he was cute, then someone said"He's not eligible since HIS BOYFRIEND thinks he's cute too". Of course indicating he is gay. I was suprised but I think it went over my gir's head. If that doesn't bother you, than you would enjoy the movie. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. Very sweet.

Hi Charise!!!

How funny you mentioned bringing snacks in!!! My hubby told me to bring stuff in, my 13 year old said Oh mommy, how embarrassing, can't they arrest you? I said no honey, the theater people should be arrested for highway robbery! :-)
I remember the double features too!!

Next time I WILL ask for a refund since I was annoyed by the crying baby, can you say BABYSITTER??? If you can't find a sitter...stay home!!! I just wanted to get the heck out of there when it was over!!
I'll buy it when it comes out!:-) :-)

Reese, my post applies to you as well, I know exactly what you mean!!!:-)

Ralph-I thought I was bad with movie-going, Ooh, you haven't been in a Minute-LOL!!!! I didn't particularly care for that movie, you had the trailers which were long enough, then the movie was almost 3hrs and I went with some friends and had to sit in the front because there were no more seats and my neck was in a RECLINED position, I looked like I was in traction and I might as well have been, because it hurt like I don't know what!! Will never do it again!!!

Morgan-LMBO!!! You sound like one of those stand-up comedians!! Your sister was really more embarrassed than mad, huh? The only time that is okay, is if mostly everyone is reacting to the film the same way, but when it is just one person and they do it constantly, not good!!

P.S. I forgot to add people who kick the back of your seat and who keep getting up and you have to twist your body like a pretzel or get up, so they can get by! This is especially bad when people do come late and it is the whole family, and you can't see the screen and yor concentration is lost. Don't go with people who make you late for the movie, nowadays the most important part of the movie is the beginning, even before the credits start!!!!!!!!!

She will find out soon enough, when she has to spend her own money on things, how to be thrifty:-):-):-):-) Why pay 2-3 dollars for candy & drinks when you can go to the dollar store and get plenty for half the cost???
Shoot, I remember once when my sister and I were younger, my mother had a large purse and she had us put our home-popped popcorn in there, and we went right on in-LOL!!!! Did your daughter laugh when you told her that????

jrlo,

Thx...and no, I seriously doubt if they'd get that line....however, you'd be surprised at the things they DO get. I forgot to mention that they (we) loved the first movie.

While we're confessing...I've only spoken out loud at movies once in my life as a child or adult. It was at the end of Predator. My step brother and I were at the afternoon premiere. Towards the end of the movie (spoiler alert), the alien starts pushing buttons on his "watch". Arnie notices this and realizing it's a bomb, starts running. Ten seconds later there's this huge mushroom cloud. As the smoke clears, we see Arnie staggering through the mist...causing me to yell out, "Goddamn, you can't evern NUKE Arnie".

Ralph,
How much was if for "talkies"....lol?

Ralph, don't feel dated!!!! That would be my mother and father's era as well. I love to hear the stories about how much candy, burgers, malts, movies etc, cost!! How big the candy bars were. Sometimes I wished I could go back in time just for those pleasures and to re-live the atmosphere of the music and concerts of that time:-):-):-):-):-) Nostalgia is fun:-):-):-) kids and teen-agers nowadays, don't have a CLUE!!!!!:-):-):-):-) I wished I could pay 10 cents to see a movie-LOL! I do remember penny candy, though!!

Destruction,
LOL!! So true...little ears and little minds are like BIG sponges!!! :-)But DO take them to see it! I loved the first one too, but this one was SO SWEET!! Let me know if you see and it and what you think! :-)

Charise,
Before we left for the theater, my 8 year old daughter kept asking me for candy at the theater, I said no...her big sister said Dont' worry mom I'll buy her candy...when we get there, it looked like my eldest daughter was about to cry when her 2 bags of sour gummie worms came out to $5.00 which was all she had in her purse. As a matter of fact it came up to $5.50! So yeah I agree...when it's their money it hurts, when it's your money, you're cheap! Oh well, hopefully she learned her lesson!

What annoys me the most is 2 things:

1) Those damn cells phones ringing, and the conversations that people carry on during the movie.

2) Being at the show with someone who wants to "narrate" the movie..i.e.-watch this part, there's a reason why she put the watch down a certain way, and on & on...

If I can't see or get what's going on, shut the hell up!

That's why I rather be at home, and my watch DVDS, ha ha!

What I hate most about the movies, is the feeling that I've been used & molested. I leave the movies feeling cheap, dirty & used. At those prices, they could at least pat my butt, whisper sweet nothings in my ear & lie & tell me that they'll call me in the morning!!

I hate paying $11.00 to watch 10 minutes worth of commercials. I hate $4.00 franks, $4.00 sodas & $5.00 popcorn that is the size of a 12 ounce soda can. A movie for two can easily approach $40.00 & then you have to hear all of the people who have obviously seen the movie, act along with the movie, or tell eveyone what's going to happen next.

I really used to hate the smell of joints being smoked. However, since we can no longer smoke ANYWHERE in N.Y., that problem has been allieviated.

I'd rather stay home watch a bootleg. No crowds to deal with & no line at the bathroom. Most importantly, no screaming, rowdy teenagers to deal with! I just turn on the surround sound, drink my $1.00 Pepsi & eat what I want. It's cheaper & I don't feel used. Then I can use the money for a REAL date.

Hey, who knows. Maybe I WILL get my butt patted & some sweet nothings whispered in my ear. I promise that I won't feel TOO used! Ahhh, it feels so good to be used so bad :-)

There's my Juice!!!! Hey there sweetie how are ya!!:-)

Oh yeah, one thing I remember..a few years ago I use to hear about theaters that have "cry rooms" little rooms off the main auditorium where mothers with babies can sit. You would think that the idea would spread...don't see them anymore!

Juice, since I am also originally from NY, I remember smelling the wacky weed smell in the theater! I also remember one guy peeing in the theater..it was the Loews victoria in Harlem. I'll never forget, I was 11 or 12 1972 my big sister took me to see "Save the Children PUSH Expo" remember that? we were sitting there and this guy was sitting in front of us with his girlfriend..he kept whispering I go to go to the bathroom but I don't want to get up..is anyone looking? She whispered no...then he whipped out his friend and peed right there in his seat...
I was too through...needless to say we never went to Loews again!!! Yecchhhhhhhhhhh

Well frankly it doesn't bother me to see those commercials although I could very well do without it...
No frankly what freaks me out is the snacks... You guys may be used to it but only 15 years ago in France when you used to go to the movies you would go there to.... uh... watch a movie...
Now you have to deal with the smell of popcorn (walking on it if you come after a particularly heavily attend to show) and people eating just about anything they can lay their hands on...
Those sweets with crispy sounding paper wrap... ouuuuuch!!! It makes we wanna take out my Magnum 44 and get into the Clint 'Dirty Harry' Eastwood dialogs...
How about the classy gentleman eating his Granny Smith apple just a row behind you... with his mouth wide open...
How can you concentrate on any dialog with this stuff?
Same for the popcorn... if everybody was civilized enough to eat it and close their mouth before cracking it, it would be OK...
Really it makes me go crazy, that's why I have bought a good home theater system so I can watch my movies without my blood pressure raising to life threatening levels... LOL

Hey Wonder B,

That's nothing, out here in California (maybe it was another state I don't remember) a few years ago they were trying to introduce "high end" movie theaters...they are of course more expensive, XTRA LARGE SCREENS and they sell gourmet dinners to be eaten at your seat!!! I dont' think it caught on...I mean they already charge way to much money.
I dont' blame you, we have a home theater system too...I just try to give my girls the movie going experience that I grew up with...no such thing I guess, huh?

I agree with those who are P.O.'ed with the commercials prior to the movie. When I go to the movies, I don't want to see the same CRAP that I see on TV (even though I only go to the second-run shows and pay a buck to get in--been a while since I bothered with anything first-run). Well actually, there is ONE commercial I love that they show before the movies: the Estee Lauder Beyond Paradise commercial. SHWING...she is hot, whoever that model is!

I also don't like the people who sit behind and kick the seats--that's very disconcerting. Also, I hate having to get up to let other people in and out of my row. EXCUSE ME? If there are lots of seats available, why do you have to do this? I think some people just get a kick out of making other people stand up during the movie!

I sneak candy in, so I don't worry about the high concession prices (the only time I'll buy concessions is when I'm with a date...can't afford to look cheap, y'know?...and even then, I probably wouldn't take a date to the second-run show!). What I'd like to get away with--and this sounds kinda immature coming from a 40-year-old man--is sneaking BEER into the theater! My friend and I got away with sneaking booze into the last game of the original Cleveland Browns, and I'd just like to attempt this to see if I can pull it off.

The biggest issue I have with the theater is a personal one: nine times out of ten, I fall asleep watching the movie! Doesn't matter whether it's good or bad, I zone out during most movies. I go to the show with my Mom, and she has to shove me to wake me up sometimes.

BTW, I think the last movie I paid full-price to see was "Man on the Moon". I was dating someone then, and I really wanted to see this, so I got her to go with me. And no, I didn't fall asleep during that movie...LOL!

Best,

Mark

Mark, I didn't know they still had "the dollar theater." Where is this? I used to attend a couple of theaters in Detroit like this, and when the prices went up to $2, then $2.50, we continued to call it "the dollar theater." After the prices kept rising, we stopped calling it that.

What pisses me off is usually technical stuff like when the projector is out of focus or when the sound is distorted.

Boy, was I mad after seeing the recent Jamie Foxx movie. First they kept showing commercials, including "what's new this fall on NBC" (What?! TV commercials at the movies?!) This is why I will definately not be watching a certain "Friends" spinoff. (Not that I was gonna watch it in the first place. LOL.).

In addition to the out-of-focus projection, there was a scene between Jamie and another actor that was poorly directed. It was obvious they shot their parts separately. The two actors were facing the edge of the screen as they cut to each actor. I was too through.

And the popcorn was burnt. So I waited for the manager and got 2 free tickets.

I hope the new Jamie Foxx movie on Ray Charles is good. I do want to see it in a movie theater.

Uptight,

If I could get paid for all of the poorly shot and directed movies I saw, the next Oprah would be featuring the Destruction Movie Giveaway Hour and you'd all have a month's supply of movie freebies....or does that only work on Jamie Foxx moveis?

Mark,
The commercial, the candy, the beer, the nap....that was funny and had to be true.

Juice,

Man if you'd spring for something besides a "darked out" version of Spiderman 2 and a Pepsi, maybe you'd GET a little something in your ear and your butt spanked

Count,
Ask Ralph

Ralph,
I'm sorry....but I've always been fascinated by history.

On the subject of annoyances,

How about multiplex theaters where, after they tear your ticket, you must board a shuttle to get to the actual room(and I'm being generous) that's showing your movie.

As a kid in East Baltimore, I had 3 movies to choose from within 10 blocks of each other. The Park, The Biddle and the Apollo. On any given Saturday, each showed 3 movies for about 25 cents. The first two closed and were later renovated into churches. The manager of the third was told that he would either have to close or open a petting zoo.

Hey Destruction,

Trust me, Juice is no cheapo! I just like to get equal value for my dollar. Remember how big the 10 cent bag of Wise potato chips were when we were kids?? Well, today that bag will cost you $5.00 in any NYC theater.

Jrlo: Hi buddy :-) Well thanks to Mr Bloomberg, they no longer smoke in the city that never sleeps theaters. When you think about it, the theater owners should lobby FOR smoking. It's a no-brainer. Think about it, they could pass out courtesy joints at the snack bar. After a few hits & the ensuing contact highs, their concession sales would BOOM!!!! There's nothing like having a captive audience with serious cases of the munchies!

Then again, the ensuing damage from the inevitable fights, may counterbalance any profits.
Oh well, it was a thought anyway :-)

Uptight--the cheapo theater closest to me is in Willoughby Hills, Ohio (in the westernmost portion of Lake County, the county east of Cuyahoga, where Cleveland is).

Every Tuesday ALL seats are 50 cents. My mom and I just saw The Terminal with Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Go see it if you haven't done so yet. Funny and touching.

Most other days, it's a buck to get in--still cheap. Obviously, they raise the prices to a buck and a half for Thursday, Friday and Saturday--you're still not breaking the bank at those prices.

There are second-run theaters on the west side of Cleveland, but I believe they charge about $2.50, $3.00 at those shows.

I mentioned that I wanted to try sneaking beer in the theater. There's actually one theater in the area that sells beer, the Cedar-Lee in Cleveland Heights (one of the local art theaters, and one of the few places I'll go to see a first-run movie; Monday nights are discount nights, if they have something I want to see). I didn't look at their concession prices, so they probably charge an arm and a leg for a bottle of brewski.

Best,

Mark

Theater movies....Bah Humbug!
Don't like...cell phones and the idiots who have long, loud conversations on them. Half hour of commercials before the movie. Cost of ticket and concession food/drinks. Theater too hot or too cold. Nasty kids making even nastier remarks to...screen, themselves, others?? It's easier, cheaper and more comfortable to rent the DVD when it comes out, which is pretty fast anymore.

The last dollar theater I remember in the Loop was the McVickers. In the old days it was a nice classy small theater, but by the mid-seventies it had turned into a 3-for-a-dollar house that showed mainly martial arts films. The carpet was sticky and there were rats running around. It was closed and demolished not long after. One of the last times I went to the Hyde Park Theatre (now closed), the projector malfunctioned and there was only a blur on the screen. The projectionist was not in the room and I had to walk all the way to the other building (there were two) to tell someone about it.

What gets me tired is the selection (or none) of actors and poor quality of movies out there that so-called represent the African American communites.

There's a lot to be said for the "big screen" movie experience.

Seeing a quality film on a screen larger than 32" just can't be beaten.

However, for all the reasons that have been so well stated by all of you,I now watch movies at home.
For those of you that have the all singing and all dancing 5.1 digital sound, the experience can be just as involving.

Even for those that have not, and refuse to go down that route, by hooking your "system" up to the TV and with a little imagination, watching a film at home can still be a very pleasurable experience.

You can pause it whenever, drink, smoke, eat all you like and won't be pestered by kids / phones / etc.

It's supposed to be a social occasion though, and even though it would seem most of us prefer to watch a movie at home now, box office reciepts both in the UK and in the States have never been higher, so I believe we are very much in the minority.

Went to the movies last week...here's a new one for me...'the cellphone ringing in the middle of the movie', and everyone saying, turn that 'ish' off!...' Saw COLLATERAL...good movie. Never was a Tom Cruise fan, but he 'smoked' in this!

The long promo's are unnecessary...'dang'...they are as long as a movie.

Hey Count,
Remember the West Side Drive In on 8 Mile? Friday night we all were there. All our cars parked in the same row. At the end of the night I'm not sure anyone could say what the movie was about.

I loved the West Side Drive-IN on 8 Mile Road. I loved the huge neon sign with the curved arrow and the gravel roads (how rude!).

There was a little bit of "home-land security" goin on, especially when the trunks were opened and about 2-4 people would jump out. No heart feelings. You just had to pay.

Ralph,
Remember when you and I sent to see the Godfather? We were still working together at Motown, and one of us was depressed, I don't know which one, so the other one, whoever that was, took the depressed one to the movies! We also saw Lady Sings the Blues when it came out!! We won't talk about that OTHER movie we saw!!!!!

Mille,
I don't remember us seeing the Godfather. What I do remember is you were curious about those X rated movies that were becoming popular but there was no way you would go to one of those theatres alone. Enter your knight in shining armor. Don't remember the movie though...

Haven't gone to a theatre movie in years. But with the announced death of Russ Meyer, maybe there will be a revival of "Russ Meyer Film Festivals". THAT would bring me back. Meyer died in Hollywood at the age of 82 from complications following pneumonia.

Loud talking ignorant folks, especially those who talk back to the screen.

And kids running up and down the aisles, and the tall guy or the woman with the hat who just happens to sit obstructing the view.
