Mays Used Records While visiting Detroit, I ventured and found this wonderful store. They have millions of 45's and LP's, all used, from popular R&B groups in and around Detroit. Stacks and stacks of Motown records piled in unassuming brown boxes with the name of the artist on the front of the box. You must look through the boxes for your "find" and it's worth it. Also, the price is right. 40 cents for every 45, regardless of the condition, and 99 cents for LP's. There are some sticker's that are 3.00 and up. For example a D-Town 45 went for $1.00. I promptly paid the man. He does not have a website. The address is 126 West Eight Mile Road. Hazel Park, MI 48030. Telephone number (248) 547-7470. I told him I would share the information with my SD family. Arcadia |

Hi Arcadia, Tell that man to set up a site with the records that he has. He'd make a lot of money off of me if he has anything good! he should get into mail order with a catalog. Hey, some of us don't live in Detroit |

Hi Juice! I agree with you 100%! I live in NY btw. Juice, I got the distinct impression that this very nice gentlemen is growing tired of the business. Not because of lack of interest but because of the cumbersome weight of heavy boxes and the slow-moving age of the owner. Also, he's stuck in a time-warp (my impression only) and computer characteristics are not apart of it. I even asked if I could call him from time-to-time with requests and he didn't seem open to the idea. He does have devoted customers and I'm sure if the business is ever "for sale" he would have no problem getting rid of it. A- |

Charise: I purchased something that I wanted very much. The "Temptin' Temptations" LP, the one with the Temps dressed in white tux's with black socks and shoes. I owned the LP years ago and now they have all disappeared. I'm taking it to have it matted and framed. I purchased about 50 45's, most of which were Detroit labels and about 25 LP's. You should have seen me at the airport with my finds tucked in a black trunk I used to own from school. Most of the LP's were the Temps and various Motown artists. Soulaholic, I was in Detroit to take care of my mother who was undergoing surgery. I needed a SD friend so much when I was there. Most of my friends have moved away since High School. I will send you my phone number and e-mail when I return to Detroit. I would love to meet you. Arcadia |

ye its a brillant shop i went there last year i took frances nero in there has she was driving me about in detroit. the good thing about it that its cheap i brought about 85 45s and if i had brought them over here in the uk it would have cost a bomb thats the trouble in the uk with the northern scene that they put there own prices on 45s bit of a rip of really i went to a do last week and i asked a dealer about peoples choice "savin my lovin for you" has iam after one he said your looking at 700 i went back to my wife and said its back to detroit soon even though i might not see it there but ill find other gems i know records can be expensive but surely theres a limit. ill see the lovely people in detroit soon. |

Arcadia: I have gotten to know Bob Mays over the last 6 years and believe me he will die in that store. He lives about three blocks away from it and it fit's his life style very well. Bob likes to fish, drink coffee and smoke cigarettes none stop. He has had record stores most of his adult life and I do not believe he will ever give it up. Just before you came in last week he had out a skillsaw and tool to redo some of his shelving, he was buzy as all heck fixing up the place. LOL! Bob is just the definition of layed back - slow moving and mellow. Bob is a fine fellow who has a great sense of humor and takes awhile to warm up to someone. Man it took about 2 years before he warmed up to me and remembered my name, I use to be the guy with the yellow sports car who liked Philly Music!! As far as an internet connection, Bob has a friend who will post the really rare and expensive things he comes across!! And yes he does save the cherries!!!! for a few people who tend to spend time and money at his shop. We have had a couple of threads about Bob and his store over the last year or so along with a few photo's. He is well known here and with the folks on the other side of the pond for the local Detroit 45's he will come across. My favorite is about how Bob buried 78's in his back yard when he ran out of room in his home and garage and forgot where they are buried. Every know and then a Brit will come and beg to dig in the yard to find them!!! Another great story is how Bob rates a record: If it gives you a good feeling like man that is sweet it's worth 10 bucks! If you listen to it and it gives you goose bumps it's worth 50 bucks! And if it makes your hair raise on the back of your neck it worth 100 bucks! But if it makes your heart skip and you lose your breath then you better not listen to it again because it will kill you and it's not worth that price!!! Mays is a fun place to visit and there is always some great finds to be |

WoW, sounds like you had a good time in that store!! Was your trunk locked real good and were you able to lock it, as they make you keep your suitcases and such unlocked(safety reasons)? Arcadia, if I had been with you, you might have left me in that store-LOL, I would've been in there so long, that man might have had to run me out. It is such a joy when you go to the store and find things you have seen in a long time, it's just plain FUN!!! I usually go with a list, because the mind tends to wander and then I'm over in this section and back at the other section. I usually spend almost 4 hours between stores |

Open invitation to all: Especially to you Arcadia, when ever you visit D-Town, please give me or any of us locals a buzz!! The SD45CC - Motown Chapter is a monthly event that we have changed dates 3 out of the 6 times to just have it on a day that someone was in town! Believe me the folks here are friendly and more than willing to make time to meet and greet anyone who comes into town. I myself do want to meet and spend time with people who have the same interest and love of music as I do. My e-mail address is open on the SD site so please drop me a line. |

Wow! Thanks Soulaholic for the 411 on Mays. You know, Bob is a good actor too. I mentioned E-bay and he looked up at me with a confused look. LOL, he is so charming! I was making a lot of demands on Bob to lift boxes (actually someone else did the lifting). When I returned the next day, he looked up at me like "HER"!? I really loved him! Thanks for the open invite. I also like to be around people who love music especially from the 50's, 60's, 70's, etc. Charise, when I first went into that store I didn't want to leave! Finally, after sifting through boxes and boxes I paid for my selections and left. Still dumbfounded, I returned at 5PM (I went at 1:00 PM) to find the store closed. I returned the next day to look for MORE and stayed only a few minutes. I'm so proud of my purchases Charise. I hope in the future we can meet up in Detroit and check out Bob's together. Arcadia |

Bob seems like a real character and a genuine music/record man! Compared to the a++++++s who seem to be found in those shops these days |
