The radio this morning reminded me that RESCUE ME has got to be one of the most perfectly constructed recordings I have ever heard. Can anyone tell me who played bass on that record? Thanks in advance doug |

Doug, I think it was Louis Satterfield The usual rhythm section on Chess soul records of that period was Gerald Sims, Bryce Robertson, Pete Cosey - guitars Sonny Thompson - organ Leonard Caston / Raymond Miner - piano Louis Satterfield - bass Maurice White - drums info. from Robert Pruter's "Chicago Soul" Definitely one of the most memorable bass-lines ever. I believe it was Louis Satterfield who played bass on that record. See the Chicago musicians thread for more info on this man. He played many sessions on bass guitar & trombone too. I saw a picture of him at work in the studio & he played a blonde 1950's P-Bass with the single coil pickup & the old telecaster type headstock. He may have played that bass on "Rescue Me". |

Matt, I'm not sure - I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same guy - probably moved to Chess from King / Federal at the same time as Ralph Bass. Davie |

Seems kinda sad, all of a sudden. Singer, songwriter, early partner (sort of) of Barry Gordy, a Top, A&R director for Chess and the producer of RESCUE ME, Billy Davis died in New Rochelle, NY last Thursday, Sept 2nd. It may have been discussed earlier on a different thread, but I just saw the obit today. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09 /10/obituaries/10davis.html Hope God buys him a Coke. |

I'm sure it's The same Sonny Thompson. I have a few small- Indie label Chicago records from the late '50s and early '60s by Sonny, and they sounded the same as his King stuff. I think his base was Chicago, and he came from there. I know he also recorded some in Detroit, but I didn't think he lived there. Not sure where jhis King stuff was recorded. |

Hi Medusa, probably the lineup for "Selfish One" is what I wrote in my post - it's the second post on this thread. Davie |

Leonard Caston and Raynard Miner ended up working with us in Detroit during the late '60s. I hadn't been aware of Leonard's prior work at Chess. He and Frank Wilson were together so often that I just assumed he had come from L.A. with Frank. |

Billy Davis produced Selfish One. A comp album of Chess hits I have lists the band on the track as unknown, but the best guess has got to be Caston or Sonny Thompson on piano, Satterfield and White on bass and drums. The same album lists Satterfield and White playing on Rescue Me with co-writer Raynard Miner on piano and Thompson on organ |
