Hello friends, I have a couple of really nice deep soul Detroit 45s - and wondered if anyone can tell me about them (or recommend more D-town deep). Joe Woods: I Found A Love (Pts 1&2) (Hit Pack) Produced by Motley & Gist, Detroit address on the label. A good version of the Falcons hit. John Lee Hooker recorded a 45 on JVB in 1953 with a Joe Woods on piano - I wonder if it's him? Jay Davis: Half Alive (Pts 1&2) (Abbott) Produced by J J Barnes & Dave Jordan, NYC address on the label. Good, raw vocals with fine lyrics and tough guitar. Is this a Detroit recording? If anyone would like to see scans, then let me know. (Message edited by BJL on September 10, 2004) |

i've got both of those and they're quite nice. the jay davis reminds me of jj barnes...pretty sure it's a detroit thing. some other nice detroit deepies: disciples, "i found out" (fortune) a gospel screamer soul twins, "mr. independent" (back beat) is this detroit? sonny allen, "your love was so wonderful" (hit pack) lee "mr. dynamite" moore, "what goes up must come down" (riley's) most of the steve mancha stuff on groovesville plus his groove city single "hate yourself in the morning"/"a love like yours" nelson sanders, "i'm lonely" (rambler) stunning deep soul nelson sanders, "i'm tired of being your fool" (la beat) just as good at a fraction of the price lots more that i'm not thinking of at the moment... best, m |

BJL Jay Davis's song was recorded in NY. I have an "Abbott" promo photo of him which he gave me when I interviewed him. He was also in The Moments that recorded on the Hit label in Detroit - and then The Tempos for Diamond Jim... The Final Decisions on Bumpshop etc. His name was James Davis and he's still living in Detroit. I'm interested in the Hit Pack label. I think this was a Sam Motley deal - distributed by Cosnat... maybe. I asked Sam about it but he couldn't really rememeber. I don't think I've seen/heard the disc you have. The only one I know of is by Sonny Allen - "Your Love Was So Wonderful" - that Mike Terry arranged. Please post a scan of both sides. I'd love to hear it! (hint) Another deep soul gem is the Just Brothers' 45 called "She Broke His Heart" that was released locally on Empire and then later on Music Merchant. I recently bought a 45 by Gloria Walker that I've fallen in love with: "Walking With My New Love." It sounds a little southern to me - nice guitar work! And I guess you've heard Betty Lavette's great 1975 song on Epic: "Thank You For Loving Me" That's enough for now - I've gotta get to bed! |

Graham; Are you getting the Just Brothers song titles (or labels) confused ? I have never heard of a song called "She Broke His Heart" on Music Merchant. |

Graham, Lars is right - "She Broke His Heart" is from '66 issued on Garrison and supposedly also on Wand - Garrison was named after one of Scepter/Wand's promotion men. A brilliant record available on one of the volumes of "Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures" Isn't the Jay Davis record from roughly the time J J Barnes was recording for Perception ? Davie |

Matt--The Soul Twins on Backbeat are the same Soul Twins that recorded for Karen, so they are from Detroit (this from an article about the Soul Twins in Shades of Soul). The Duke/Peacock operation cut quite a few Detroit artists: Buddy Lamp, Little Carl Carlton, Bobby Williams, to name a few. Detroit City Limits once published a list of Detroit singles on Duke/Peacock and associated labels. Best, Mark |

Yes, you're right, I got confused with the flip side - Things Will Be Better - which was released on Music Merchant # 1008. Another gem is Little Rueben's song "In The Name of Loneliness" which came out on the Detroit based New Records label. It sounds like a duet to me, but I guess he just overdubbed his vocals a second time. |

Mel, I suspect those records only exist on paper. They were probably intended for release on Wand and assigned numbers but at the last minute switched to Garrison. Davie |

Graham: yes the Soul Twins were cut in Detroit and leased to Duke/Peacock and I have DAT copies direct off the master tapes which include about 12 tracks. |

Thanks, Ron. That one sounds very southern. Carl Carlton told me he dubbed vocals (on some of his Back Beat 45s) down in Memphis, so it got me wondering. |

Thanks David Those last two records were included on a UK CD compiled by Dave Godin, titled "Deep Soul Treasures." I've just got the latest one - volume 4 - which is another must-have for all music lovers. Detroit is again represented with Smokey's "The Tracks of my Tears," and Ruby Andrews' "Just Loving You." |

Yes, David. It was fitting we later met George McGregor who confirmed it was cut in Detroit. The song has a distinct southern soul sound to it. That's the Funks! |
