I was wondering if someone could tell me what was the real reason behind the split between Gladys Knight & The Pips? I remember hearing in the seventies they couldn't record together because of legalities? What were all the legalities about? What happened in the 80s? There were on an album with Gladys and on the next one she was solo. Are they still in good favor with each other? Where are all The Pips know and what are they doing? Anyone who could help me with finding out these answers, I would be greatly indebted to. Thanks!!!

Since 1978, Knight has lived in Las Vegas, close to her mother, Elizabeth, and two of her children and their families. She continues to perform frequently in Las Vegas and beyond and published a memoir, Between Each Line of Pain and Glory: My Life Story, in 1997. With the Pips, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation in 1998.

In April 2001, Knight married William McDowell, a corporate consultant whom she reportedly met 10 years before but had only begun dating the previous January.

Until someone can give you more detail...Merald (Bubba) still works with Gladys as her road mgr. (I think that's his title) and Edward and William left the performing side of entertainment to start an ice cream business in 1989. I believe that it is William (Guest) that had a stroke several years ago..but is reported to be doing well and I've heard that Edward (Patten) is or has managed some groups. WRT the 80's...prior to The Pips calling it quits, there was a lawsuit between record companies preventing Gladys & The Pips from performing together...but there seems to be no difference of opinion between them and it's all love, as families SHOULD be.

1wicked, I always thought the same, that they are still family, no bad blood. Bubba does sometimes come out on stage with her and I hear he is quite an impressionist of different people and a jokester. It was Edward Patten that had the stroke, I believe. I wondered how his condition was, as I haven't heard about either him or William Guest, but I do remember that William had started his on business, related to some food item.

I thought I saw a picture some time back of Edward Patten in a wheelchair.

Can anyone confirm this?

1wicked, you are right....Bubba is Gladys' road manager and every once in a while he comes onstage with Gladys to sing with her. The last time I saw Gladys in concert, he was there, and BUBBA sang lead on "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" and Gladys was singing background! WHOA! It was a lot of fun.

SDF, you are right! I can't remember if I saw the picture or if I read about him being in the wheelchair, but you are correct. That was some time ago, and I haven't heard anything about his condition since then and it's been at least 15yrs ago. I'm assuming he has made some progress, as no news is good news, maybe.

From what I remember, there was a bit of a problem with the group & Buddah. Buddah switched distribution to Arista. Around 1978, she sued Buddah AND Arista & their presidents. That year, she also signed a SOLO contract with Columbia Records. Naturally, Buddah & Arista counter-sued.

While this was being settled, they were blocked from recording as a unit. They were allowed to perform live together. In the interim, The Pips recorded a couple of LPs for Casablanca Records. Gladys recorded an LP, Miss Gladys Knight for Columbia.

In 1980, Gladys & ALL 3 labels settled. Buddah agreed to drop their suit against Gladys & Columbia. In return, Buddah received a settlement. Buddah also granted The Pips their release, who were never involved in the lawsuits. They then recorded the About Love LP on Columbia, which featured the hits Landlord & Taste Of Bitter Love.

That's pretty much what happened!

Gladys Knight also has an upcoming role in the film, Unbeatable Harold, which is in post-production. She plays the role of "Phyllis" and costars with Henry Winkler.

Truly a super-star!

Bubba is one of the nicest people once could ever meet! He has an incredible memory as I saw him last year and he remembered a conversation we had eight years ago. Did I remember the conversation? No, not until he reminded me.

Gladys is very lucky to have a brother like Bubba and she always mentions such in her shows.

Just heard in the last few days from a friend who recently saw Gladys on stage in Las Vegas. He says she was awesome, her voice was in terrific shape and she had a very tight band and bckg group. Bubba was also part of the show and sang with Gladys.
