I am glad to see Soul 2 Soul, and Wattstax have been released on DVD. There are quite a few more flicks from the early 70's that I haven't seen that are not out on DVD. SAVE THE CHILDREN from 1973 is one that features quite a few soul acts from the early 70's including the TEMPTATIONS, BILL WITHERS, JACKSON FIVE, DON CORNEILUS, and a few others. Also there are a few soundtracks from that era I would like to see released on CD, along with the movie on DVD. TROUBLE MAN-which starred Robert Hooks, and was scored by Marvin Gaye, has not been released on DVD, or CD. MELINDA-which starred Calvin Lockhart and was scored by Jerry Butler, has not been released on DVD,or CD. Does anyone remember these films and can you name some more you would like to see released from that era? |

I have a copy of "Trouble Man", I taped it off of Black Starz a few years ago. Decent movie. It was released in 1972 and starred Robert Hooks, the late Paul Winfield and Ralph Waite. Hooks played a Los Angeles private eye. The opening theme, performed by Marvin Gaye has a different lead vocal than the soundtrack album. What I would like to see released on DVD: MELINDA (1972) with Calvin Lockhart, Vonetta McGee, Rosalind Cash & Rockne Tarkington LADY SINGS THE BLUES (1972) with Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams & Richard Pryor GORDON'S WAR (1973) with Paul Winfield, Carl Lee, Gilbert Lewis, Tony King, Ossie Davis & a then-unknown Grace Jones MAHOGANY (1975) with Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams & Anthony Perkins HIT MAN (1972) with Bernie Casey, Pam Grier, Lisa Moore, Roger E. Mosely, Edmund Cambridge & Christipher Joy HIT (1973) with Billy Dee Williams & Richard Pryor COME BACK, CHARLESTON BLUE (1972) with Godfrey Cambridge, Raymond St. Jacques, Peter De Anda, Minnie Gentry & Jonelle Allen THE SOPHISTCATED GENTS (1981) with Paul Winfield, Bernie Casey, Melvin Van Peebles, Ron O'Neal, Rosie Grier, Thalmus Rasulala, Dick Anthony Williams, Robert Hooks, Raymond St. Jacques, Sonny Jim Gaines, Ja'net DuBois, Alfre Woodard, Janet MacLachlan, Joanna Miles, Denise Nicholas, Rosalind Cash, Mario Van Peebles, Beah Richards, Marsha Warfield, Albert Hall & Robert Earl Jones UP TIGHT (1968) with Raymond St. Jacques, Ruby Dee, Frank Silvera, Roscoe Lee Browne, Julian Mayfield, Janet MacLachlan, Max Julien, Ji-Tu Cumbuka, Ketty Lester, Robert DoQui, Leon Bibb & James McEachin (Music by Booker T. & The MGs) NO WAY OUT (1950) Sidney Poitier (film debut), Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell, Stephen McNally, Harry Bellaver & Ossie Davis ANNA LUCASTA (1959) with Eartha Kitt, Sammy Davis, Jr., Rex Ingram, Frederick O'Neal, James Edwards, Rosetta LeNoire & Alvin Childress Plus all those '50s & '60s rock & roll movies and pioneer all-Black cast films from the '30s & '40s |

I remember trouble man. That movie came out when I was in the 8th grade I believe. Now Melinda I vaguely recall. What was that movie about. I surely don't remember the music. I liked the music from the Mack (Willie Hutch I believe) and Across 110th street (Womack). Those are two soundtracks from the 70s I wouldn't mind having. |

Ryko Disc (Rykodisc?) put out a few hot soul soundtracks like Across 110th St, In The Heat of the Night and other Quincy Jones produced soundtracks. A couple I'm curious about based on the soundtrack records are the Together Brothers (Barry White/ Love Unlimited sdtk) and Big Time (Smokey Robinson soundtrack, great title track, in my opinion. Anyone seen either flick? I've never seen or heard of either being on vhs let alone dvd. |

Hi Erik, Together Brothers was an okay movie. Kinda typical of the Blaxploitation films of the era. Think Cornbread, Earl & Me meets The Mack minus the pimps, while retaining the corupt cops. Big Time......yuk!!! I don not remember Melinda at all. What was the deal with that movie??? |

"Melinda" starred Calvin Lockhart as a Los Angeles DJ who fell for a mysterious woman (Vonetta McGee). Her character was murdered. Rosalind Cash played his ex-lady. This also marked the film debut of Jim Kelly, who played Lockhart's karate instructor. Jerry Butler sang the title song. |

One of my favorite music soundtracks is "Young Soul Rebels." I think I found it in a bargain bin somewhere years ago. Here is the track listing: Young Soul Rebels [Original Mix] - Mica Paris Message in Our Music - The O'Jays Running Away - Roy Ayers Time Is Moving On - The Blackbyrds Don't Let It Go to Your Head - Jean Carn Let's Get It Together - El Coco You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) - Sylvester P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up) - Parliament I'll Play the Fool - Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band Rock Creek Park - The Blackbyrds Me and Baby Brother - War One Nation Under a Groove - Funkadelic Let the Music Play - Charles Earland Young Soul Rebels [Remix] - Mica Paris I never heard of the movie, nor have I ever seen it televised. Anyone have any information on this movie? I think it may have been a UK release. |

Now, the movie that I'd really like to see is Sig Shore's "That's The Way Of The World" aka. "Shining Star". That movie features Earth, Wind & Fire as The Band. Now, we all have the LP, however, I'm waiting for someone to re-issue or bootleg this one. I heard that it was extremely terrible. I'd like to find one for myself. I don't know anyone who owns a copy of this one! |

Hell Erik, I sure better find a rental shop that has it. I've NEVER seen it in any Blockbuster, or mom & pop shop. After the way that the movie was bashed in music bios, most store owners probably weren't touching it with a 10 foot pole. They bashed it something fierce! |

Hm, if I remember I'll try to note what company is mentioned on the box next time I pass through there... if anyone on here's interested in hearing stuff from soundtracks (mostly) I'm playing a set of mostly-soundtrack, and mostly-funky-ones at that, on the radio and on-line at www.ciut.fm I'd suggest calling for requests but there's a finite amount of music I can cram in a 2 hour show divided between 3+ genres of music (usually funk/soul and reggae and something different to start)... gotta run, it's at 8pm EST until 10, I play soundtrack shows once or twice a year around film festivals... |

Fox Movie Channel showed "Claudine" a few times this year, but everytime I want to tape it, there is another program on another channel that I want to record the same time the movie comes on! I WANT MY DVR RIGHT NOW! I hope they show it again b4 the year is out. I taped "Trouble Man" on FMC earlier this year, never seen it before-LUV IT!!got the soundtrack (on LP) too. Another classic flick that I've haven't seen in a long time was "Willie Dynamite" on the Starz! Black Cinema channel, unfortunately, I had 2 see it at my friend's house on Satellite (which I don't have), so I could'nt tape it -got the soundtrack, though. Hit, Sweet Sweetback, The Mack (got the LP), Mohogany (taped it on HBO last year) and all the other movies/soundtracks mentioned above are the ones I would love 2 own on DVD/CD/Tape sometime in the future, I love the blaxploitation films, and when it comes on channels like Showtime or Cinemax, I will tape them. But the one movie that no one mentioned out of all the classics listed here is.....are y'all ready....."PIPE DREAMS" starring Gladys Knight in her what I think is her movie debut and her ex-husband at the time (who is the father of her youngest son), who I also believe directed the classic film. Released in 1976, "Pipe Dreams" is a story of a couple (now follow me, I haven't seen this movie since the early '80s, so my memory may be cloudy in describing this film, but maybe your expertise in black cinema will help me complete the description), who left the inner city of I think Detroit (maybe NYC, I don't know) to go to Alaska of all places, where the husband finds a job working on the Alaskian pipeline. And as all couples do, they experience the sudden culture shock in the new place they moved to for a better financial opportunity, and go through all kinds of drama in their relationship, at the same time making new friends while bracing the harsh winter of America's "final frontier". Did I get at least half of it right y'all, if I didn't, fill in the blanks. Now that's the movie I would love 2 see on DVD and the sdtrk. on CD as well. Has anyone seen it? p.s.-I also have the "Together Brothers" sdtrk., but never seen the film, where I can get the movie and sdtrk. on CD? |

Sparkle, another great Mayfield soundtrack. I liked the way the girls sang in that movie. I love the Claudine soundtrack (make yours a happy home personal fav) but I don't I don't know if I'd put it above Superfly soundtrack. The music on that record was hot. "Little Child Running Wild" man oh man. The music in that song gives me chills. |

And it should. Curtis had the uncanny knack of writing the perfect score for the subject matter of the movie and a lot of folk could relate to the sounds of the street and the life because Curtis heard them just as we did, drums, wah, wah guitar, horns and strings and he used it to advance the story at a very emotional and elemental level......the man was genius. Funny thing Soulseeker when you said it gave you chills I understood exactly what you meant. The much celebrated composers and music directors for films like the Godfather and Once Upon a Time films ....usually get all the credit for being so evocative and true to whatever the hell they are presenting and when it comes to Curtis they always have to have the word the "million selling Blaxploitation film sound track "Superfly"...my God I think everyone in the world knows that Superfly was a movie about a black drug dealer. But I'll be damed if the music doesnt sound as fresh today as it did lo those many years ago when it was released and Curtis = Genius. I clearly remember his "Oscar" snub because the movie didn't contain certain lyrics to one of the songs. Well the powers that be can kiss where the sun don't shine then and they can kiss it now. This was one of the most amazing pieces of music that was ever recorded. Sorry to rant on but I get chills when I hear............... Kdubya |

That's something to think about Kdubya. I think Claudine, Let's Do It Again, Uptown Saturday Night and another movie I can't think of the Staples did with Curtis. It's a movie about Sidney & Bill plays as two con men, I can't think of the movie to save me. I place Sparkle the least favorite of mine. I'm not saying I dislike Sparkle I just can't explain it. I do think musically Sparkle doesn't sound like a Curtis Mayfield Soundtrack, it sounds so different, fresh and new as if someone else done it. I recall back in 93-4, that soundtracks we're more popular than a studio recording. I mean it got so bad at that time (with exception with some) that alot of artists CD's we're lame & weak. Because alot of music I'm still hearing are still lame & weak. What has happened to the soundtracks and why aren't they as important as they we're prior and starting a decade ago or even now? Because alot of styles of music nowadays are. Don |

I believe the movie is a piece of the action. By the way Sparkle sounded like Mayfield to me when I watch the movie. It didn't so much with the Aretha recorded version. Aretha's voice was at the forefront of the record whereas the movie the music was very prominent. |

Thanks for your response Don and Soulseeker you're right the movie was Piece of The Action. Soundtracks are weak nowdays because they are rooted in disposable music. The profliferation and computerization of music(hip hop) in particular has reduced a significant portion of the population to mindless robots, there is no way that you could compare Piffy Daddy to Quincy Jones. What!!!! ! You want to rate R Kelly next to Smokey ? Where are the Norman Whitfields, H-D-H-Gamble & Huffs, Thom Bells......?????? Uh oh...I'm starting to rant again....peace and hairgrease ya'll........ Kdub |

Not only that. Soundtracks aren't really made the same as they used to be. With a lot of movies they ask for an artist to contribute songs. Nothing has to be related. A lot of times its who's people lobby the hardest to get their artist's song on a particular soundtrack. They usually don't ask one person to write the soundtrack like they used to therefore nothing is consistent. I think the last soundtrack that I bought that had been penned and composed by one Artist was Waiting to Exhale and much of it was written and produced by Babyface. I don't think he wrote all the songs but he was in charge of the entire project and it was pretty much consistent from beginning to end. |

Wasn't the soundtrack to the first Batman movie written and performed entirely by Prince? (Too lazy to look it up). I guess I'd also have to add "Purple Rain," to the list. I also remember soundtracks being immensely popular in the early 90's. A couple of the more popular ones that I can remember off the top of my head are "Boomerang" and "The Bodyguard." |

Kdubya, Soulkeeper & Soulsause, Here's another thought for you gentlemen. Remember when a artist would have a song or songs on a sdtrk and have the same song or songs on their own album? Nowadays artists don't do that move anymore. When I think about, sometimes I wish they'd do. When any artist come out with a CD and their first 2 singles comes out, sometimes it makes me wish they should have included the sdtrk onto their own CD. Then again their song'll be ignored anyway in alot of cases nowadays, so why not include a song anyway, and maybe it'll get picked up and to get themselfs again. Don |

^ I think perhaps they don't include the songs to possibly get more money out of you. It's like how they always put some "unreleased" song on greatest hits compilations to make you feel obligated to buy it even if you own all the "hits" on other albums. I just thought of another great soundtrack..Lady Sings the Blues. ~Soulsauce (Lady, not gentleman :-) |
