Sure looks like a bootleg to me - as do most of the CDs listed - that "Best of Amy Records - Doowop" must be - no US label with the rights to
Amy-Mala-Bell would bother issuing such a CD

Well they've even spelt Gino Washington's name incorrectly, unless it is the guy who recorded over here with the Ram Jam Band doing Detroit covers !

And many of those songs aren't doo-wop to begin with!

Almost NOTHING on that album is doo-wop to me! A couple of them might be "fringe" doo-wop. They've got fast #60s soul, several garage band, pop-rock, surf music (Tim Tam & Turn Ons to me are more like The Ripchords, Fantastic Baggys, Beach Boys -than doo-wop),- apretty weird collection of obscure and not so obscure tunes of many genres.

hello everyone: please excuse me but I am highly pissed off right now after looking at the link above to the Doo Wop store and seeing the "Michigan's Greatest Hits" which should be called Michigan's Greatest Bootleg CD", who ever did that has a lot of nerve and it better not have been done by the store that is selling it.

I will be contacting that store today about that CD as I am sick of people thinking that all Detroit products is fair game for them to do as they damm please with it, I just happen to know a few of the guys that own those masters and if they don't stop selling that CD the Doo Wop Center or what ever it's called will be getting some calls from people like Armen Boladian's lawyer who owns the master and rights to "Poor Unforanate Me" and the "Gino Washindton" that they spelled as "Geno" as well as others.

yes I think enough is enough people from all over are stealing Detroit produced masters without ever trying or caring about the people who made that music and it has to stop, and this CD here is just too damm much , it is a overly blatent boot. I will be back too say more later.

oh yeah I forgot to mention that our moderator Ralph Terrana owns the rights to the Southbound Freeway cut and then they decided to step on Motown as well who owns "You Have'nt Seen My Love" by The Ones and the list goes on.

the bottom line is this: you can not use somebody's master without their permission...and they don't have to give you permission even if you are willing to pay the required royalties
including publisher payments.

before someone mentions that the southbound Freeway songs were leased to the Swan label that the rights still may come back to the original Tera Shirma owners at some point

The Michigan's Greatest Hits CD, was originally done by the late Tom Knight 10/15 years ago. Not to say that his was legit to begin with, but this is just a awful looking knock off.

Ron wrote

Quite right, the important word there is "leasing"
- not an outright sale of the masters to Swan or
whoever - most leasing deals include a clause
whereby the rights revert to the owner after an
agreed amount of time.

From comments made by people like Rodney Hall of
FAME (Rick Hall's son) it appears that some of the majors don't seem to be aware of that.

I'd have to check the track listing for that "Michigan's Greatest Hits" CD again but some of the material is available from legitimate sources.

Well...shoot me in the head, but if I saw that weird collection at the store in the $6.99 rack I would buy it and worry about rights later. You can't fault his taste. Probably made from scratchy 45's.

Ralphie...you want the drug lords to take care of 'em ?...let me know. The boys get the new guns the day the ban expires.

Hate to say it, but Bong-Man has a point.

On the other hand, I find it hard to believe the two Cameo/Parkway/Lucky 11 songs (EAST SIDE STORY and I WHO HAVE NOTHING {eerrrgghhh}) would be licensed, given Allan Klein's history on C-P reissues.

Lyle thanks for that information, and I will take the ball on this since I know Mr. Boladian pretty well as well as some of the others who's masters are being used on that CD which is a boot of a boot like most of the items being offered from that site, I can tell you that Armen Boladian is taking legal action on this type of thing and the sampling of his material.

I did email that site to let them know what the deal is, usually things like this don't bother me, but it just seems like people think nobody in Detroit cares about their masters so it's all fair game, in fact some have got so bold over in England that they are claiming to own the tracks and have licensed samples from them, this I know for a fact and have proof of it.

enough is enough , when blatent bootlegs are advertised like they are legal products such as this site is selling that is going a little too far

Hello everyone: I am now able to report back on this and I'm happy to say that the CD in question has been pulled and is no longer being offered.

I received this information from Mr. Stu Nelkin who is the General Manager of dopwopcenter.com

I want to thank Mr. Nelkin for his understanding.
