Tomorrow Moe and I head to Saratoga Ca to see the Funks. We intend on taking pictures and will see that they get posted. I'll be back on Saturday. Unfortunately, Moe flies.

Ralph & I had the pleasure of seeing the Funks in concert tonight in Saratoga, California. The place was packed, the people were rocking, and so were the Funks!! I had even a greater pleasure when I met the Funks before the concert. More comments and pictures will be coming as soon as either I can figure out how to post them, or I give them to someone to post. Later, friends.......we're tired!!

Good Morning Everyone!!
After enough coffee for both of us, we are plied with enough temporary energy to tell all of you about last night's concert. We thought the biggest enemy of the concert would be the weather (it was very hot here during the day) but it cooled down just as the concert started. We arrived in town early enough to visit with the Funks at their preconcert sound check. I have to say it was a wish come true for me & it was nice to have Ralph catch up with all his friends. EVERYONE associated with the band could not have been nicer!!
After a quick bite to eat, the concert began. AND DID IT EVER!!! After an incredible opening of GET READY, the Funks got really down to business. There were no "name" soloists with the band. But, the backup singers took turns singing the various hits. They were very good!! One of mention was Marcia (that's pronounced Marseea) Ware, of Nashville. She gave Joan Osborne a run for her money with "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted." To prove my point, she received a much deserved standing ovation.
The concert ended with Tom Scott's blistering sax playing "Shotgun." The people (packed to the hilt)were all on their feet & dancing.
Back at the hotel, a last late night call from Babbitt to say goodbye put the cap on the end of a wonderful night.
For all of you Funks who may see this, I say a sincere thank you!!
BTW...a bigger thanks to you Juice, for posting my pictures. If it wasn't for you, these pics wouldn't get posted in a prompt & timely manner!!

MOE & RALPH - Geez, you two really look good together. No wonder Ralph has been so nice lately. Just like a little puppy. :-)

I know you had an exciting time with those Mighty Funk Brothers. Wish I had been there.

And even MORE!!!!

6
The mighty BAD Jack Ashford

7
Joe Hunter...Motown's FIRST official musician

8
Eddy ( he never ages ) Willis and Mr. Ray Monette. As many of you know, Ray was the lead guitarist with Rare Earth for 33 years. However, his roots were in studio work, primarily with The Funks. He recently agreed to rejoin them on tour and to me ( Ralph ) it's like 1969 again. Ray it was good to see you and your chops are impeccable! How great it must be for you to be working again with Eddy Willis!!

9
Ahhh..... Babbitt
A good example of a superstar with one name. For years the name Babbitt said it all for me. How deep my memories go with this talented guy.

MoeTomScott

Moe & Tom Scott
A professional collegue of Moe's is a HUGE fan of Tom, as we are too. She can't wait to show the guy this picture. Tom...thanks. You were great and it was my privelage to, at last, meet you.

I need to mention that for some strange reason we didn't get any pictures of Uriel Jones. Uriel, I apologize. I'm not sure how that happened. At any rate it was great to briefly hang out with you again. I have always had a thing for watching good drummers work. How privelaged I was to watch you on all those sessions. I'll never forget it.

Moe & Ralph - Of course Ralph is just as sweet as anyone could be. But, he never gave us such a wide smile like that. Sometimes Ralph can be..ah..what should I say....umm...ah...ok, I got it, sometimes he can be a tiger when he gets ticked off. :-)

Moe - I would have had a ball. When the Funk Brothers play, I can't stop moving. I love their sound, it is happy music. It's just something about that sound that keeps you moving. I like a good party, and nice people. The Funks are very nice people.

Keep the music playing, and Ralph - keep smiling.

Sis D,
I have to tell you this conversation I had with Joe Hunter, since both of us are big fans. I asked him why in the world was he placed in the back for American Idol?? He said he didn't know, but that Wayne Brady made up for it. (remember he got place front & center on his show). He said that Wayne Brady is a big fan of his. I thought that was nice to hear.

There was no mistaking Joe's presence during the concert; they had a bunch of people come onto the stage to dance with the Funks and boy, DID THEY COME!!!!! In droves!!! Everyone wanted to kiss Joe!! BTW: Jack Ashford told me they have new material coming at the beginning of the year (I do believe that's what he said) Ralph, Jack say anything to you about that??

I didn't discuss material with Jack He did tell me that things were going very well with them and they all seemed happy.

Sis,
I thought the forum would like this thread because of the pictures of the Funks and all. So far it's just you, Juice, Moe and me here. Rather strange...

:-) :-) I was wondering about that myself. Surely the fans will come out when the Funks appear in their areas. In the meantime, I guess you can just say: "Eat your heart out." LOL

Take a look at what some are saying in the Funk Brothers' Guestbook.

Ralph and Moe,

Glad you had a great time! The Funks are the Best and Baddest Band Around. I'm so glad that I had a chance to see them when they were in New York. Jack Ashford has such a hugh presence and such a wonderful warm smile. Babbitt, Babbitt, Babbitt, what more can be said about this man, he makes that bass sing and my heart soar.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful pictures with the forum, and giving us a glimpse of what we missed.

Ralph,

I kinda felt the same way when I started the threads on Carl Carlton & Detroit's own Ladeez & Gents. Frankly, I expected Detroit to make a little more noise for Michigans own.

Go figure, a New Yorker giving more props :-)

JuiceFree - Now don't start on Detroit. How many SD posters actually live in the City of Detroit?

I enjoyed looking at your film and photos of Carlton as well as the other photos. And I posted that I enjoyed them. Of course, you didn't see me jumping up and down, hollering and waving my arms all over the place, here in front of my computer when you posted Carl Carlton. :-)

Hi Sis,

Fortunately, there were some who gave Carl love. Quite a few. I guess that I expected the proverbial avalanche :-) I know that when Brooklynites hear about one of their own, EVERYBODY talks about how bad they are & how their 2nd cousin on their fathers side, went to school with them :-)

Honestly, I expected to see more love for The Ladeez & Gents, especially since Ralph of The Floaters & a certain young lady who sang in The Debonairs, were in the group. Singing their hearts out for PBS, might I add. I won't mention the young lady's name, as Vonnie should be posting that info soon. Not to mention that they're all pretty cool people.

Hey, I know that Sis gives love to her own :-)

I saw Ralph not too long ago, singing with the Floaters at the Casino. I'm looking foward to that PBS special. Remember, I asked how many SD members live in the City of Detroit. How many in the US even appreciate Carl Carlton's singing, or even know him? I believe he is basically in the Northern Soul category.

Now, the Funks are in all categories.

As usual, JuiceFree, you are absolutely correct. Carl Carlton does belong to us. We were all so proud of him when he made his first recording. Heck, Detroit was proud of so many artist back in the day. I remember when I was about 18, Tony Clark would pass our house almost everyday. He had a convertible, small car. He would always blow his horn because he knew we were going to wave.

Hello Detroit. :-)

Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Owings Mills, MD. I've never been there, but from their website it looks like an auditorium setting - nothing like the Rams Head :-) For me, it's much closer than Annapolis or DC! I try to keep up with the Funks on Babbitt's web page. www.bobbabbitt.com He has a "schedule" there and sometimes it's even current.

Hi Moe, Thanks for asking. The kids and Iraq are keeping me more busy than I care to be. Family and work are keeping Chuck very occupied too. I read the threads, but haven't posted in a while.

Of course you're correct, Pork the Tork is THE MAN in the Burgh!!

GO STEELERS!!!

Hey, how about those Lions winning a road game? :-)

Destruction, From Eldersburg I could almost walk to this place...a long walk, but I would do it. I'll be there !!!

Hi!
Moe: Did you really hear Mr. Ashford saying that they have new material coming at the beginning of the year? I would love to believe that it is true.
Or maybe Mr. Monette has some insight on this subject?
Or maybe Mr. Ashford himself could tell us the truth on this forum!
Best regards,
Funk Timo

Funk Timo,
Ralph & I were sitting front row center for the sound check; Ralph was talking to people on the stage; I was talking to Jack Ashford. He got up, turned to me & told me about it & went up on the stage (geez I hope I'm not senile).
I tell ya, they were ALL nice to me, but only Jack offered that piece of info......
