Could be wrong about this but Jean apparently waived her rights to future royalties to get out of her contract with Motown - don't know about the others but Lynda wasn't really there for very long and nothing she was on was exactly a major seller. The basic reason is that they signed to Motown for "X" number of years - they wanted out of the contracts before their expiry dates so they chose to relinquish their usual rights in order to leave Motown. Florence Ballard got one lump payment from Motown of about $20,000 (I think) to waive all future royalties, at the time I guess that seemed like a lot of money, nobody knew much about re-issues and CD's way back in 1969 so it ended up being a great deal for Motown. boy I sure wish that Motown's accountants and lawyers were running this country, we would be in great shape. |

From what I've read in various sources, Flo got around $160,000 when she left Motown. J. Randy Tabborrelli (sp) says Cindy signed her royalites away in 1972. In an interview with the Star, Cindy said that she signed away her royalties in 1976. Either way, she signed them away. J. Randy also wrote that Jean signed hers away in 1973. I'm not sure where Lynda stands. However, I've read that she is a good businesswoman and always has been. So she probably didn't sign hers away. However, since she was only on one album and two singles, they probably aren't much. In her Yahoo group, I believe Susaye stated that she still receives royalties. I would assume Scherrie does as well. |

Yes Flo got 160,000-later close to her death a 50,000 payment which still is mysterious--some say from Berry, some say from lawsuit per a broken leg;; Ive read Mary says she gets about 80,000 a year in royalties(as of a few years ago); Jean brought suit agst Motown but I dont know results; Cindy did sign away and later felt robbed as she didnt have legal representation; my understanding is Susaye gets some royalites but Scherrie and Lynda do not(Lynda recorded one single). From Jean on I think they were signed on a salary basis. Yes there are discrepancies which I cant explain. Martha got an attorney and got royalties in 1989 and to this day I believe, despite the fact she had singed them away to go to MCA is my understanding--why she can get royalties if she signed them away I dont know. I think if Cindy got a good lawyer she could get some. Why Susaye does and Scherrie does not-?--tho I think Susaye got an attorney which perhaps she could afford and Scherrie could not--yet as I said I think they were salaried so I cant explain it!!Anyone else??(I do find this topic fascinating!) |

Jimmy Mack, you are very correct except, now Mary Wilson receives approx $120,000/yr in royalties; Jean Terrell sued in 1994 and her royalties were re-instated. Cindy Birdsong, like Florence, took a lump-sum payment at the time of her departure. |

Thanks Marv--couldnt Cindy like Jean sue?And didnt Martha do similar yet now gets royalties? Mary must have been tempted to take a lump sum-how great she didnt--if others had only known!!I also wonder why Flo's family and Mary Well's family coudnt do like Martha did per re-instatment of royalties. |

I have heard that the $50,000 Flo got not long before her death was actually from Diana Ross. This was after Diana learned that Flo lost her home. |

Its also been written that Diana actually tried to stop the foreclosure on Flo's home. She wrote out a check for the unpaid balance, and wanted to make it payable to the bank. However, Flo's husband Tommy insisted that the check be made out to him. Diana was suspicious of his relationship with Flo by this time, and refused. When she couldn't get in touch with Flo, the check was voided. The above info was in the book CALL HER MISS ROSS. According to the author,a copy of the voided check exists in Motown's accounting files. |

Why would a supposedly private cheque from Diana Ross be held in Motown's accounting files ? |

Davie, During the 70s, Diana was still very much under the control of Motown and Berry. In recent interviews, she has even said she didn't know how much money she had back then, where it was, how her taxes were paid,, etc. In one of her lawsuits against Motown, Mary Wilson alleged that as late as 1974, she still had to get Berry Gordy's signature before she could withdraw money from her personal savings account. After reading these things, I don't find it hard to believe that Diana's personal financial records during that time were mixed in with Motown's. |

How did the Wells' family get royalties?I had thought she gave them up to go to 20th Century? I dont see why Flos family dont sue--Flo was ripped off big time. |
