I'm interested in finding out a little more about the former Latin Quarter nightclub at 3067 E. Grand Blvd. in Detroit. Does anyone know the history of the place -- who ran it, and/or which acts played there in the '50s, '60s and '70s?

Does anyone have any memories of the place? Former names include Grand Terrace and Oriole Terrace.

It appears to have been built as a ballroom (1923) but may also have been used as a theater for awhile. I'd also be interested if anyone knows what kind of condition it's in inside and what the status of the building is.

one of the guys who owned the 20 grand was also involved at one time.

it's definately worth documenting and i'll bet clay mcmurray has been inside.

I remember The Latin Quarter as having "big name" attractions like: Sophie Tucker, Lena Horne, Jimmy Durante, Sammy Davis, Jr., Arlene Dahl (?!), during the late 50s/early 60s. I sang there once myself with The Don Large Chorus (of WJR's "Make Way for Youth" radio show).

By the time I had begun to hang out there it had become a rap venue.

David of Glasgow:

I vaguely remember that the stage was on the second level (like a mezzanine) and I think there was a huge pipe organ under the stage in the orchestra pit. I remember looking out over tables of people having dinner and it was like I was on the second floor and they were on the first. It was a proscenium arch-type stage and there were lots of big, bright, colored traveling spotlights.
