This past early summer I had the honor of meeting David.
What was especially exciting for me was that it was literally 1 block from the house I grew up in in Ann Arbor.
We met on Arborview street in front of the house that Ollie Mclaughlin lived in.
As a kid growing up there I well remember the two Mclaughlin kids, Ira was one but I don't remember the girls name. But I also remember how exciting it was to have a music person in the neighborhood. It really was big stuff at our school (Mack elementary)and the Mclaughlin kids were like stars!
And remember this was still in the days of the british invasion and the zenith of the motown sound. We never really knew what Mr. Mclaughlin did. We only new he was in music and that he may have produced a Barbara Lewis record (baby I'm yours) and Deon Jackson's (Love (makes the world go round)but that was more than good enough for us. We were 11 yrs old!
That was about the time I started playing music and I have never stopped.
Years later in the mid-80's I met Mr.Mclaughlin at the Star bar in Ann Arbor when I was playing in a blues band. He was still involved in music and even expressed an interest in the band I was with.
Nothing became of it but; the idea that he thought enough to express an interest is something I feel quite good about; even to this day.

Deon Jackson, Bob Seger, and Iggy Pop all went to Ann Arbor High School (now Ann Arbor Pioneer High). Seger was class of '63 and Iggy (nee Jim Osterberg) was class of '65. Deon Jackson never graduated but I think he would have been class of '65 or '66.
Someone once told me that Barbara Lewis also attended Ann Arbor High, but I've never been able to verify that.
Iggy was so named because his high school band was The Iguanas. There is a pic of the band in either the '64 or '65 yearbook. Iggy can be seen playing the drums.
The Rationals were from Ann Arbor as well. Rumor also had it that Cub Koda (of Brownsville Station) wrote "Smokin' In The Boys Room" about Ann Arbor Pioneer's 2nd floor C-Building bathroom (where everybody smoked, and it wasn't always tobacco).

I believe Deon did live in ann arbor. I seem to remember he attended what was than Ann Arbor high school. I don't know where Ollie's kids ended up they were a few years younger than me so they would be in their early 40's now.

Fury, you are hitting so close to home!! I well remember the 2nd floor BR in c-hall at Pioneer. And I did more than my share of "smoking" there!
Being a rather marginal student I would spend a good deal of time cruising the halls with my friends.
Pioneer is a huge school and very easy to escape any teachers or administrators. We use to kick the back of an empty locker out and stand back in the space between the locker and the wall and get high. We always wondered what it would have looked like to see 4-5 people exiting out of a locker!!
Last year my daughter graduated from pioneer; and next year my youngest will begin at Pionner!
Back in 68' my sister dated Terry Trabant of the rationals. I remember vividly Terry and my sister taking me to the 5th dimension to see the rationals!
I have played quite a bit with scott morgan over the last several years. Scott is one of the most soulful and generous and sincere people I have ever known. It is only by fate I believe that he never broke out really big. And even now his musical sincerity is very admirable; not to mention that he is just plain good!!
A musicain friend of mine has a stack of mimeographs of a Stooges concert at ........Forsythe Jr. high !which is where my daughter attend now (a middle school).
The concert wasn't a rousing success but it is pretty cool that he still has those flyers.
Quite honestly I have never been a fan of Iggy's music but the few times I met him he was very nice.
It is nice to discuss less volatile topics here!!
p.s. It seems I have a faint recollection that Barbara Lewis was from South Lyon.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about the Barbara Lewis-Ann Arbor connection. That story always seemed dubious. The Iggy, Seger and Deon Jackson info is reliable though.
I know because I'm a member of Ann Arbor Pioneer's class of '74. I was part of the yearbook staff and was able to peruse old copies of the Omega yearbook, where I saw the old pictures of Seger, Iggy and Deon.
CL, I always avoided the second floor C-hall bathroom. You could choke to death on smoke just walking in there!

Wow fury we graduated the same year from the same school! How ironic is that on a detroit forum?!?
When did you leave a2?
I spent most of the 80's playing around the area with george bedard , steve nardella , mr. b ;were you around then?
I have a little bit funny story of playing in detroit, the crowd hostility and Iggy's respone when we told him. But another time.
I remember we actually had a smoking lounge in Pioneer!! My daughters find that incredible!!

Yes, I remember the Pioneer smoking lounge... seems like a ludicrous idea now, doesn't it?
I left Ann Arbor for Detroit in '75, then relocated out-of-state... Iowa, Ohio, Texas and Nevada were my next stops. Didn't come back to Michigan for good 'til '96.
I guess I always identified more with Detroit than Ann Arbor, since it was where my family originated from (I lived in Ann Arbor from '65-'69 and '71-'75). Never really considered Ann Arbor my hometown, although I do have many fond memories.

Huge coincidence though, CL, finding another AAPHS '74 graduate on these boards!

I ask this on nearly every board I go to: Where exactly is Deon Jackson? I know he's reportedly in Chicago working in clubs, but has he been contacted? That's one of my big raison d'etres, to find Deon Jackson. He and Patti Drew seem to have slipped under the soul radar, much to my chagrin. He's one of my favorite male singers and to me he's integral to the history of Detroit soul. Is his discography available anywhere?
By the way, reading this particular thread is fun, I'm getting a slice of life depiction of teenage life in Detroit in the 60s! Thanks!

Ah, familiar familiar picture! I have that Marginal CD. SO many great tracks on it, it's a pity that the Marginal Catalog is wholly illegal (I found that out AFTER I purchased a good spate of their titles, though!).
Deon, Darrell Banks, and Ed Hamilton are some of the greatest non-Motown voices to come out of Detroit.
