David,
I'm stumped on this one. Was it produced by Ollie? I can't quite make it out. Not that it matters all that much since I'm still a little in the dark about The Tera Shirma Strings thing anyway.

it says 'mclaughlin music' and produced by him too.

who would have provided the musicians for something like this? was it normal for people like ollie to bring in their own?

That's a tough question David. I'm sure Ollie used the regular rhythm guys for the track. But the string thing is a mystery.
It couldn't be the usual Detroit Symphony players because Ollie would't have been legally allowed to do anything like that with them. He must have imported some string players for the session.Something WAY back in my memory tells me this is what happened, but I'm just not sure.

Is that because the Detroit Symphony players belonged to the Musicians Union? Dennis Coffey told me he once used young guys from Cass College to play on one of his string arrangements at Golden World.

I think the Milton Wright 45 on Carla # 1902 is -
The Gallop / Like A Rolling Stone
Isn't "I Belong To You" a vocal version of (instrumental) The Gallop?

Graham,
I don't think the musician's union was a factor in this. It's just that these players were under contract to The Detroit Symphony. They would not have been allowed to market themselves under different names. Also, knowing how thse guys were, I don't think they would have been interested in this anyway.

that's why i was thinking the flip of the satiron disc might be an instrumental as was a frequent practice in those days.

do you know of any other releases on this label?

'The Gallop' was issued as an instrumental only & the vocal 'I belong to you' didn't appear until 1979-ish when John Anderson got the master off Ollie .. Satiron was John's label he used to promo the vocal on to the Norhern Soul DJs

I've spokeen to a few music people in Detroit and they've told me they used the Symphony guys for the string sessions; I'm sure those San Remo Golden Strings recordings done at Golden World are by Detroit Symphony players.

Well I have to admit I had forgotten about the San Remo Strings on GW.So maybe it is possible that The Tera Shirma Strings were in fact Detroit Symphony guys. Mike Theodore may have this information but he is out of town for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I'll e-mail him when he returns and see if he can shed some light on this. It's seems though that Ollie used Dale Warren quite a bit as an arramger so I still might be left in the dark on this one.

Hi all,

The Carla 45 has another instrumental (Like a rolling stone?)...... Wish I had my records with me. Anyway, it is a similar "sound" to "Gallop" but more lilting and subdued. I would be very suprised if it actually wasn't the Detroit Symphony guys under the guidance of Ollie. The arrangement is also technically magnificent but I don't know who the arranger was. Ralph mentioned Dale Warren? it would certainly fit into place as being one of the maestros.

Regards,

Dave
