Here's what I have listed for Ms Carmen Murphy's Soul label. I think they all date from c. 1962.

837 - The Barons - Dod Eat Dog/Money Don't Grow On Trees

838 - The Glows - Twenty-one/We're Drifting Away

838 - The Barons - Who's In The Shack/While The Cat's Away

840 - Othea George - What's The Matter With Me/If I Didn't Have To Lie

841 - Johnny West - Tears Baby/It Ain't Love

There apppears to be a mistake with label numbering (two number 838s and no #939?)
The Barons "MDGON" was also issued on Spartan but with a diferent flip side. The late Orthia George was also a member of The Majestics who recorded for the Chex label.
Ms Murphy sold the label name to Berry - I've head she got one dollar for it!
Regards, Graham

It is amazing, that I too have seen songs being "sold" for the sum of one dollar!!
It is just an arbitrary number because they have to put "something" relating to a dollar figure on the contract so $1 is the "standard" amount for these kind of giveaway deals. I suppose that the unsuspecting victims really think that they are going to benefit from this at a later date!!

Thanks once again Graham. Records pre-63 don't seem to get much of a look-in with discographies. I had never heard of this label. Are the records hard to find - ditto Spartan? I love to buy one record from each label, even if the song isn't so good - just to have some memory of it. I have the Volumes 'Come Back Into My Heart' on Chex which is quite good. Any chance of label scans of Spartan/Soul?

Bobby, the $1 sale seems to apply to property too. I've seen property sold for £1 but I guess there are strings attached.

What is THIS Soul label? Did BG buy it out or something to come up with the Motown Soul label?

I'll get on to it right away! I doubt that I have an address you don't, but I'll look through the records too, to see if there's anything I missed.

I had another idea for the promotion of your site! Along with Ralph's tee shirts (I want one), when you have finished the webisodes of Ralph's tour, photographs of studios etc., how about creating a cd-rom with the stuff on. I guess eventually you will fill your allocated web space and want to put new stuff on. I suppose loading the cd would start off the browser and, lo and behold, your web pages online with instant access. It must be possible. I'll stop rambling now and look for the addresses!

The Soul label 45s are quite hard to find - but not too valuable/pricey. I'm hoping to hear "Money Don't Grow On Trees" very soon as a UK friend is sending me a tape. I'll let you know what I think.
There are some good songs on Chex. Have you heard "Give Me A Cigarette" by The Majestics? It was later issued as "So I Can Forget."
"I Love You" by The Volumes was a big hit for Chex and got issued in the UK. Popcorn Wylie is playing a suitcase on that one!
Cheers, Graham

Did this Soul label come out of the same address as her H.O.B. venture with Mike H? Also re the Chex label, anyone know the owner and or address?

Thanks Keith

I'd put money on Spartan, Starmaker, Soul and HOB being based at 111 Mack - Carmen's beauty salon.
Chex was owned by Tony Ewing. He's still in Detroit and I interviewed him in Sept. I'm not sure what address he used during the early 1960s, but I could find out.

Tony Ewing certainly features heavily on the label as singer and with The Technics, and as a producer! The writer of 'Come Back Into My Heart' is a certain W. Ewing, he/she must be related! The co-writer was E. Newson who, I guess, might be a member of the Volumes (I show my ignorance here) as they feature on Chex and he/she also wrote 'I Got To Love' with Duke Browner for the Volumes on Twirl!

I'm afraid I haven't heard much from these early labels, Graham. They don't crop up too often! I think some of the stuff got re-released on Relic records!

Add the Poptone label as being a W.Ewing one, too!

Ruby Lee -
"I believe in you"
"I'm gonna put a watch on you baby (24 hours a day)"
POPTONE 1901

Wonder if the Tony or "W" played the awesome sax parts which featured a lot in his/their output?

Flynny
