That is wonderful Carl!

Was it a premonition of getting high in the studios? I wonder if the single was ever released? If so, I want a copy!

There must be other similar Motown promos around too!

And for those interested in this:

http://www.reelradio.com/dk/index.html#ctkhj0269

It reads:

This was the last jingle package used by KFWB as a music station (1967). It's a custom package labelled as featuring The Count Basie Orchestra and The Vandellas (without Martha!)

You will have to scroll up to the heading: KFWB funky jingles 1967 and click it. I think the first thing you will hear is 'Nothing but Heartaches' with the KFWB musical logo. Listen to the bass guitar, if you can, some of the cuts. There is a Jamerson style lick, but I do not think it is the same 'sound' you would expect on the higher notes. Also, I am not convinced they are The Vandellas. Jingle singing has a certain style - but I could be wrong - it is late. Also the package turns into typical jingles for a station, that you would expect around this time.

My homework tonight has revealed something of possible interest. I have been playing 'Love is here and now you're gone' by The Supremes (Chartbusters vol. 1), which I like very much. I notice exactly at 11",19",54",01'02",01'36" 01'44", 02'17",02'26",02'34, there is a harpsichord loop with a glitch in it! It is repeated throughout the song and it looks as though it has been cleverly utilised and disguised. It is on the right track!. On the same album, I also notice 'When you're young and in love' is 'out of phase' in certain parts and kept in phase by the lead singer. This suggests a partial phase error! Also, as you can tell, I am not too busy. The two Invictus CD's I have with 'Give me just a little more time' on by Chairman of the Board, I notice that the 'Chartbusters' version, the pitch is slower than 'unconquered' and that on both versions, 2'10" and 2'07" in, depending on which one you have, turns in to mono - I think! Just an observation at 0423gmt. I actually could be dreaming this of course! I am sure that if I find any more trivia I will mention it, but would prefer to get some sleep if I can!

I was going to point out the www.reelradio site to you guys for another reason -- not just the jingles.

You can check out several very cool Detroit Top 40 deejays from back in the day via soundchecks reelradio has posted; one of Dave "Sangoo" Prince at WKMH (the predecessor to WKNR), one of K.O. Bailey from WJBK in 1969, one of Lee "The Horn" Alan from WXYZ in 1965 ...mind you, these are slices of the Top 40 stations Detroiters listened to, and as such, you'll be amazed at what a huge variety of music was available.

I was alive in '62, albeit young, but I don't remember most of the songs played in a segment of Dave Schafer's '62 WJBK show. One of those cuts is a song by a pre-Temptations David Ruffin, and it apparently went nowhere, because I'd never heard it before! It's so cool that deejays were taking chances on records back then -- sure, many of the discs bombed, but it was raw, rough radio democracy in action.

The other notable thing is that this is Top 40 radio, not R&B radio, and yet a huge percentage of the records were R&B -- Motown or Memphis soul, or whatever. K.O. Bailey was spinning Jerry Butler, the Temptations, Johnny Rivers, Gladys Knight and the Cream in the space of 20 minutes. The guy would be arrested for doing that in today's formatted radio world -- but that was Detroit radio, we didn't separate R&B from rock, white from black audiences -- it all was good!

It makes you realize (or remember) the vitality of the Detroit radio scene, which really propelled the music ...

Agreed - I have known about this site for some time now. Part of me loves '40's' style harmonies and that's why I like jingles too. Some are very cleverly constructed and add to the glamour of radio, especially American radio which I love! And yes, some of these programmes are introducing stuff we know as classics now, but then, they were new and fresh!

On Richard Searling's show a few months back, someone brought in a cassette featuring part of a radio show by THE Scott Regan immortalised by Edwin Starr. It featured Stevie Wonder in the studio singing along to, I think, 'Uptight'. If only I could have been there! A little different to national radio these days!

When I was in The Sunliners many of the aforementioned DJ's would show up at the clubs to see us. Naturally we would always acknowledge their presence to the audience.
They always seemed to appreciate this in that they were made " vulnerable " to so many of the lovely ladies in the house that night. Bobby....how's that for " incentives " ?

Were they ever badgered by the audience?

That tape of Stevie Wonder singing "Uptight" was electric. After Richard Searling played it, he said....woww, well that's blown my socks off. I laughed at that...cos that was just how I felt when I heard it.

There's even more of that sort of stuff about! Scott has tapes and tapes of it

FYI, Scott Regan was an unofficial member of Motown's Quality Control department.

They were definitely "badgered" by the band.

I actually met Scott a couple of years ago when he was helping Harry W to add some authenticity to the re-issued album "Temptations Live".

Scott was just so fascinating to listen to....full of stories...a bit like our own Bobby Eli here. However, he had no idea that he was thought so highly of in the UK - so I put him right about that!

He was doing well when I last saw him..keeping himself busy with projects. I suspect he could do with a few more, but then so could we all!

That's an intriguing, if puzzling statement you made... my question, how do you "add authenticity"?

Harry NEVER just re-issues a CD - he makes sure it has the heart and soul of its original release. Scott Regan introduced that original show and the re-issue had a reminiscence from Scott included.

BTW, the original show at the Roostertail had opening acts Earl Van Dyke and Chris Clark.
Ain't that something!

I guess we've got to get Scott Regan on the site - does anyone still have contacts with him?

Also, other artists must have recorded special versions of their records for his show. Does anyone know if they exist on vinyl? The 'Scott's On Swingers' track is 'sex-on-a-stick'!
