I took a chance on a used cd called Detroit Soul Hunter by Ty Hunter and a few songs on it are pretty swell. I especially like "Everytime" and "Lonely Baby." Now that's my kind of soul. Can anyone turn me on to more good stuff like this?
BTW, I'm starting an RnB and Hip-Hop label, so wish me luck! I intend to put that Detroit sound in the music too!

I SECOND THAT EMOTION!!!!!
And a ton of cash and "secondary" incentives to enable the stations' music directors to even consider giving a listen, and you BETTER have hit songs!!!!!!!!!! No money or "incentives" will make the public buy the thing either, so think twice and keep your day gig!!!!!

"Lonely Baby" was first released on Check-Mate, and as you know - is a great record. Ty's voice is sensational; this guy should have been a star. I don't know the CD that you have, but Ty also had 45s released on Chess and was the brother of Hershal (sp). Didn't Ty later join Motown's Originals?

A PS to my message - Lonely Baby was recorded in Chicago with David Ruffin and Willie Kendrick singing background.

Ty was a member of the Original and Glass House....a very distinctive voice...

I never knew he was the brother of Hershall though...

The CD that I have is from a label called "That's Soul." (Finally got Kingsley Abbotts' book, also, whe Ty Hunter is mentioned. Real swell book.)

Brian

It was issued here in the UK.......STML 11287..June 1975.

Being a southerner, I used to read about what was popular in the North in Blues and Soul and from memory, the track that everyone used to play was "Why'd You Lie"...

Credits show Dennis Coffey on guitar.

I have my ticket for the Originals already!

Julian - guys

I could be wrong (it HAS been known!) but I have a suspicion the Ty Hunter "DETROIT SOUL HUNTER" CD may have been a bootleg, or at least of questionable legality. I have a copy of the CD (kindly supplied by a friend who's Stateside) though mine is not an original.

Julian - what details are on it - any licensing credit, for example? And perhaps more tellingly, is there a barcode? I'm just curious.

Many thanks for the info... interesting!! San Juan Music - hmmm. That's a name most frequently seen as licensor on cheapo compilations of Oldies, and often with poor sound quality.

The eagle-eyed may have spotted a Y2K court case involving copyright infringement of the works of various R&B artists, in which SJM were the defendants.

The company failed to answer to the charges and damages were awarded to the plaintiffs in default judgement. The result was substantial damages...

"Judgment is entered against San Juan Music
Group, Ltd. on behalf of the following plaintiffs in the
following respective amounts: Chilites: $900,000.00 -Eldorados: $1,000,000.00 - Betty Everett: $100,000.00 - Jay Hawkins: $500,000.00 - Louis Jordan: $100,000.00 - Leadbelly: $1,900,000.00 - Joe Turner: $700,000.00."

Other claimants against the company include numerous early 60s labels, e.g Del-Fi, Chancellor, Original Sound - and the Salvation Army!

As regards the Ty Hunter CD - I think we could say the jury's still out on this one.

The Posse only had one 45...with 2 tracks...there are 3 here.

Julian...did the last one sound like a motown recording....you have now had enough experience to be able to tell!

further to my last posting on the posse ,if i remember rightly i only ever saw a doublesided
orange demo and one white label mono/stereo
janus copy i dont remember a full release on the single as such,it was very much a temptations/detroit emeralds type production
and lacked something ,but interesting at the same time

The rear cover of the disc indicates that Feel Like Givin' Up was on V.I.P., and You Better Come Out And Play was on E.J.K., and Eddie Kendricks is one of its writers (both performed by the Posse. The lead singer on the latter song emulates Eddie very well (it's not him,is it?).

there was a article if i rember rightly ,eddie was talking about a new group he had discovered
and was writing for ,so it is quite possible that he was on the recording ,however he was at tamla at the time ,so it would have to be done without credit to him etc how ever ,the realeases were definatly on janus , wouldnt it be a good idea if
all those old blues and soul articales were put on the web?
