the pictures which ralph has presented to soulfuldetroit are absolutely stunning AND historical.

many classic recordings came through that control room.

Ralph - Lowell

Thanks again for another superb instalment in the net's best serial! LOVE the new pics (especially with my background in the business!) Once again, congrats all round for another little masterpiece.

Ralph,

I'm glad to see you mention that Milan built the studio B console.

We all had to do that back in the '60s, nobody just went out and bought a console. Many of those homebrew consoles were better than today's store-bought consoles too!

Bob,
I know Milan did a great job on that console. He would eventualy expand it. He needed more inputs and at that time would buy some pre-made modules. I think we added 12 to the existing board. Bob I always give credit to you engineers. You're such a wierd breed ( smile )
Also if memory serves me correctly you still own several of Tera Shirma's Neumanns.

To Russ terrana:
I'm mighty happy that you are spilling your heartfelt guts out about a landmark in the Detroit music scene. And as a San Francisco Bay Area native (going on 39 on September 13... How the irony of a Deaodato tune during his CTI Records days upon that date), it somehow recalls about an incident at a recording studio Christmas party by running into a former Engineer there. Her name was Susie Foote, and the studio was Wally Heider Recording at 245 Hyde St. Some of the stories she told me was about a buzzer at the front door as a warning for the SFPD have arrived if a client would be involved in some illict substance activities, and it was at the studio's entryway.
Russ, what were the dimensions (width x legnth x height) of Tera Shirma B?
And speaking of leasing a building, as well as Columbia Records, another San Francisco studio comes to mind: The Automatt. This was the former CBS recording studio on 827/829 Folsom St., which ran from 1978 to 1984.
Unlike TS's studio A razed, The Automatt is now a parking lot. The building became interiorly damaged by the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.

Mix,
Thanks for the stories.Regarding the studio dimensions, I believe in a future episode of the story, a floor diagram will be shown. It seems I'm familiar with that buzzer story at Heider. Not a bad idea. In the 60's studios could double for pharmacies at times.

a detailed diagram of studio A and studio B is being prepared but we don't know the dimensions unfortunately.

Ralph...

Yet another great instalment on Tera Shirma....all those controls...woweee....wish I knew what they all meant though.

See...........I told you, you could write a book...providing no women are around to distract you!

John,
Maybe I should write a book about the women who have distracted me. That might be a tad bit more interesting then looking at a picture of a console.

Naaah, keep to the consoles!

John,
Now you got me thinkng. Maybe there is a correlation between women and consoles.
I HAVE had a five year love affair wth my present console, a Mackie 32-8. Hmmmmm!
Maybe if a found a woman named Mackie that was thirty two years old I might at least have a shot at an eight year long marriage.

Ralph

Or maybe 32 women resulting in 8 children or even 8 women and 32 children Aaagh!

You would then be called Ralph T-ired-rrana

(tee hee)

If you got hitched to your console I guess that would be a mixed marriage!
