I spoke to my old friend former Temptation Damon Harris just yesterday. For those who are unaware, he was in the Tempts from 1971 until 1975 as the replacement for Eddie Kendricks and sand the tenor lead on many of their hits including Papa was a rolling stone, Firefly, and many more.
In 1976 he reformed his old group the Vandals, changed their name to Impact and recorded an album for Atlantic which I produced.
In my opinion he is the only one who matched Eddies' style to a tee.
Sometimes in the studio when I closed my eyes I thought that I was somehow transformed back to Motown and recording Eddie!!!
I informed him of this site and said that he will come on. He is dealing with prostrate cancer but is doing well and in good spirits.
Check out his site www.damonharris.com

It was the Legendary Ladies of Motown evening in November 1999 at the Roostertail...and almost every female person who worked at Motown was there.....Velvelettes, Vandellas, Marvelettes, Andantes, Maxine Powell, Mabel John, Brenda Holloway, Scherrie Payne, Freda Payne, Esther Edwards, Rebecca Giles, Sylvia Moy, Claudette Robinson, Janie Bradford, Caroline Crawford, Syreeta, Lynda Lawrence, Dayna Hartwick.......and there were some blokes too...CP Spencer, Spinners.......my mouth was open all night (catching flies!)...my lasting impression is holding a plate of cream pie for Syreeta whilst she was giving me her autograph. These women looked just wonderful.

Music for the evening was from the (fan fare please...) THE Velvelettes and the Spinners.......what a night, it really was such a night. It was a funny feeling sitting at a table with Brenda and Mabel watching the Velvelettes performing....later Cal asked me to go on stage for a little light banter...and I looked down at the audience and I thought.....my gawd....there they all there...my idols are all in front of me......it was the most humbling moment of my life and I got to thank Harry for that. I owe him.

I came away with a memory that will last me all my life.

Too long I have been singing "It Should Have Been Me"...well this time....IT WAS ME!!

Hello, this is Damon Harris. I don't know much about this site but judging by the names that I have seen this is a meaningful and worthwhile place to be. I've been told that many of you have questions about my stint with the Tempts that I would be happy to answer, within reason. Moreso, I want to thank those of you who have expressed your concern & blessings regarding my health through the many messages that you've sent. It is because of this outpouring of kindness that I have progressed to the extent that I have. Most of all I want to thank you for your appreciation of my work as a member of the Temptations. Again, Thanks For The Memories. Bob, Some Things Are Meant To Be.

Wonderful surprise. Another honour for us. I read the 'audition' bit for The Tempts on your web site. When you got the nod, I bet you could not beleive it! When it came to performing the earlier stuff you must have known all the words without trying! And then the new stuff coming along at that time was so different. Looking back now, we cannot live without that music, but how did you rate The Temptations change of direction with respect to what else was going on in the early seventies and the groups earlier history?

Cheers

Carl,

During my time with the group I garnered 3 grammies, 2 American music awards and 9 million seller recordings . So to me the change in direction was great. More importantly, my line-up not only continued the kind of success that the group was known for but, we accomplished a milestone with the awards that ranked us with the previous two.

Right or wrong, as a kid who grew up in the 70's, Damon & Dennis WERE the Tempts. Thats who was out front on TV and LP. I only knew Eddie from all his solo hits & David from Heavy Love. I didn't want to hear My Girl at all (don't faint). I wanted to hear Superstar, Zoom, Shakey Ground, Happy People, Glass House, Keep Holding On & Up the Creek. Later when I heard it was Billy Bass & Eddie Hazel on a most of that stuff it made perfect sence. The funkiest players and the best vocals. We knew guys like Stevie, James Brown, Marvin & the Tempts had been around for a long time but the kids still ran to the store every few weeks to get the new 45's because they were still happenin'. Damon & Dennis were very happenin'. Before drum machines & samplers ... Change was GOOD. I've often heard people doggin-out every album the Tempts ever did after Skys the Limit, but they've missed out on a tremendous amount of very deep funky music. I've often thought it was because the group went black to the basics, and some folks flinched.

Ritchie -I agree!

Damon, we are hungry for as much trivia and stories you have the time for. We thrive on it and it makes listening to the great songs even better. It now transpires, interests that started 30 odd years ago have matured to this level, where we still enjoy and buy the music and relish anything else connected with it. This year I already have tickets for the London Palladium and Royal Albet Hall for 2 Motown events. Please do not be surprised to get unorthadox questions like: I know Eddie Kendricks was one of your hero's, but were there other singers and musicians you particulary admired during the sixties that influenced your style?

Cheers

Rich/Damon

I remember my local disco in Hull, of all places, that WAS the place to go to hear The Tempts new stuff and to be honest at that time of my life I was not too aware of the sixties stuff either, although now, I love that too. I remember 'Law of the Land' being played. The dj always turned the lights off and put on the strobe. It was magic. The bar was always empty, because everybody danced ( I will copyright that line here and now!!). And just about the same with 'Happy People'. Great, great dance songs that have my youth plastered through every groove. I could even tell you the names of the aftershaves and perfumes that were worn by the folks there ( I think I will copyright that too!).

Cheers

Thanks for your thoughts regarding my role/contribution to the group and the albums. I felt that I had truly made when the comparisons between Ed were being made. Hi Carl, Eli here!

Damon and I met "officially', very early in 1976.
WMOT productions in Philly who were hot at the time with Major Harris, Blue Magic,Fat Larry's Bamd , Booker Newbery and others had connected with Damon and his group prior to him joining the Tempts. They were called The Vandals/ Young Tepmts. Allen Rubens who ran WMOT thought that I would be a good match as a producer/writer for the group. Damon came up with a new name for the group " Impact", and we immediately bonded and commenced rehearsals , usually at my house in New Jersey. It was very easy going and the "Motown Ghosts" were present and accounted for.
Songs were carefully chosen that reflected the wonderful harmony that the group possesed.
Damon did most of the leads although some were shared by Charles, "Pimp" and Quentin.
Damon came up with a cover concept involving a Rhino, because that animal definitely made an impact, and that logo was carried throughout.
They had a mike tree designed that was remote controlled off stage. Afirst of its' kind.
It actually got standing ovations!!!!
As the albums' producer, i believe that it is my finest work because a lot of love went into its' creation. Damon and I are about to embark on PHASE 2.

Damon,
I was told that Rhinos do have a long life expectancy, so now it shall be geniologically as well as musically proven!!When they unearth rhino bones in a future generation an Impact logo will be present!!!!
Carl, yes Give a broken.... was Impact.
the project was an idyllic and magical experience for all involved. Candles were lit in the studio and I was transported back in time to the days of Motown. It was such a "real" feeling.
These guys needed no help from studio singers. They were the genuine article, indeed.
Atlantic did not know what they had in Impact.
Had Atlantic played their cards right, they would have had smash album and a long and fruitful association with one of the most talented teams around. One last memory, Man and woman , Taboo,
all classics . I used Tower of power on the horns on the uptempo stuff and I went to San Francisco to record them, having previously worked with them in Philly. Trully amazing.
When the group was ready to tour, they employed the services of Lon Fontaine, long time Motown choreographer. I went down to Baltimore many times to see them rehearse their show.
Incidentally, I forgot to mention that Billy Griffin who took Smokeys' place in the Miracles was in The Vandals at one time as well.

Bye for now

I think I need to get down to my record shop and get buying some more stuff.

Ralph,
I can call the T.O.P.I owe them a cmmunication as I have not talked to them in some time although I sometomes see Lenny Pickett one of the sax players who leads the S. N. L. band.
They played on several of my productions including a later Blue Magic album called Mystic Dragon, as well as Damon's group Impact. When they came to Philly at one time to work with me, they were knocked out by all of the gold records on the wall, especially,of all people "Brenda and the Tabulations, even moreso that the obvious ones.they had a gig at the Tower Theater at the time and they dedicated "You're Still A Young Man " to me. It moved me to tears.
In the studio, they bring with them every horn known to man. On one of the "Impact" songs called Love Attack, Lenny doubled the bass line with a
b-flatdouble bassoon, and it had to be miked at the bell as well as near the mouthpiece!!! Greg Adams, their lead trumpet player is a master at head arrangements. What an experience!!!

I spoke to my old friend Len Barry today.
Len , as you know recorded the msssive 1-2-3- back in 1965, and although it wasrecorded at Bell sound in NYC, it could very well have been a Motown record. In fact, he almost was signed by them but got a much better deal at Decca through Madara and White, who had just gotten a production deal there. Len cowrote with me most of the songs on Damons' Impact lp, as well as many Blue Magic songs as well as "Zoom" by Fat Larrys' Band ,and " lovetown', by Booker Newberry the 3rd.
He says Hi, to all on the forum.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ritchie Hardin (62.254.0.5 - 62.254.0.5) on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - 08:24 am:

Hi Bobby

Len Barry at Motown...? Now there's an interesting concept to hypothesise about! For some reason, his fabulous 1-2-3 seems to have been overlooked by the Northern Soul fraternity, yet I've always classed it as a great record - (I actually bought it in '65 when at the tender age of 11.) And I do agree, it had all the hallmarks of a "black" record - not the least of which was Len's voice. By the way, when we were talking about the early Pop material on Cameo, I forgot about the Dovells - they were definitely a notch above much of the fluffy stuff.

But, Len Barry at Motown? I wonder how he might have fared, given his talents in so many areas, and Motown's insistence on delineating people's functions... artist OR songwriter-producer. Only Smokey seemed to be allowed to be both. I wonder if he might have had the same problem as R Dean Taylor - Motown's reluctance to let songwriters become artists? Incidentally, I also suspect his Motown output might have been more interesting than Mr Taylor's. No disrespect to RDT, but I think Len's roots were closer to Black music than his. After all, R Dean Taylor ended up sounding more like Neil Diamond than Marvin Gaye!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ralph Terrana (209.240.222.130 - 209.240.222.130) on Tuesday, February 12, 2002 - 02:49 pm:

Ritchie,
Actually Motown was very interested in furthering the career of R. Dean Taylor. Or maybe more precisely, Harry Balk was. After Dean hit with Indiana Wants Me Harry was on Dean to put a band together and go on the road and promote himself.Dean for some reason did not want to do this. To complicate things, Dean had gotten involved in some sort of motivational training course and was, in Harry's opinion, becoming a pain in the ass. Harry would tell me at times that he was going to take Dean AND his motivatonal tapes and throw them out onto Woodward Avenue. It finally got to the point where Harry would tell me, with typical Harry Balk humor, that he wanted to release an anthology album on Dean Taylor's hit.I know personally that Harry cared very deeply for Dean. I think it frustrated him to see Dean throwing away such great opportunities.

Ralph -

Thanks for that - quite enlightening. I was referring to an interview I read with RDT where he claimed that in his early days, Motown tried to talk him out of wanting to be a recording artist, and concentrate on songwriting instead. (I once heard something about him being "an understudy to HDH" - or perhaps that was only meant figuratively?)

However, your revelation, and the fact that he'd already recorded prior to joining Motown suggests that his "early struggle" claim might have been simply a good story by some eager journalist.

Any idea where he is now? The liner notes to the recent CD said his current whereabouts were unknown, or words to that effect.

Can't wait to see those photos !

I've seen the one of the Marvelettes - love it,
it's so wonderfully cheesy . No expense spared in
the stage props dept.! You'll have to post it
now so the rest of the forum won't think I'm
completely crazy : - )

Hi Ritchie and everyone,

Just a few more Len Barry tidbits
He had several singles on Cameo as a soloist, one was called Hearts Are Trump.
Len was , in my opinion a songwriter much in the vain of Smokey. In fact ,Smokey is his idol. Len is just as good with his rhyme schemes and metaphors.
In early 1964 Len did, in fact go to Motown for a meeting. Had it been resolved the results could have spectacular. Knowing him as wall as I do, he is the genuine article, a true black man trapped in a white mans body. One thing to take note of.
1-2-3 was patterned after " Ask Any Girl, which was the b side of Baby Love. Listen close and compare!!!

Ritchie,
Mike Valvano used to keep in touch with Dean. He may know his whereabouts. Mike is supposed to be posting here. I am waiting for him.

Ralph...

So are we too...but there is so much going on here....what with YOU getting shot whilst performing with the Sunliners.....DeAnne eating popcorn under a table...Bobby telling us of experiences..it's a bit hard to take it all in

Seems like there was never a dull moment with you guys.....I don't think I could manage all that excitement in two lifetimes, let alone one!

Bobby -

I guess you're going to have to lean on Len Barry, and see if he can check in here. I'm sure his input would be much appreciated.

1-2-3 from Ask Any Girl...? Wow! Yes, the connection's so plain, but I'd never spotted it, and I have both records!

"The best is yet to come!!!!"....? Bobby, you're too much! ;o)

Hi Ralph -

I think a lot of folks over here would be interested to know where RDT is today. The compilation that came out last year attracted a lot of attention, and he could be in line for quite a few interviews. Let's hope Mike might have some clues.

Ritchie,
I'll make some phone calls and see what I can find out about Dean Taylor.

I pride myself on my musical history.
If you want to know anything regarding the Titanic, I was in the f***n house band.
I was too f***n rhythmic for those guys although they sometimes asked for that "coloured feel"
Look for the wax cylinder lost sessions. When the ship capsized, the control room was really upstairs!!!! I wonder who " Jack" was??
