John Lester -
I remember your comments about this double CD and took the liberty of ordering it immediately, after I read them in this forum. It arrived this morning and I am now playing 'Somethin' Stupid'. What an excellent version of this very current song. The bookends are great. What a wonderful idea. Wouldn't it be nice to hear the whole session of what was said on the floor and the control room, in addition to the completed instrumental and then with the vocals? Also, I have noticed on track 15 'You're all I need to get by', just go back 3 seconds and hear Marvin Gaye justing singing 'like sweet morning due' before the music starts! The mystery vocal on 'Oh how I miss you' - could it be Vance Wilson singing, as it was a demo? Is that a 'male' name?
Also, if anybody is interested, Edwin Starr, Martha Reeves and Freda Payne are appearing at The London Palladium on Sunday 2/6/2002. Our tickets have been ordered centre stalls 3rd row from the front! In light of the sad passing of Mr Hank Cosby, I am sure I will have a tear or two, now, and on the night.
Ade, Saturday night could be our 'remembrance' at the all-nighter. My wife and I plan to go early. There is no way I can stay the full duration due to other commitments. I will watch out for you and John, you live locally - are you going? I have never been to one in my life!
Thanks
Carl Dixon

Ok - so my spell checker cannot tell the difference between 'due' and 'dew' - niether can I! But maybe the song DID mean 'sweet morning due' as in ' a lovely afternoon' or 'an terrible anxious evening' - maybe.....

I am so glad you bought it - I told you it was worth it. Thank Harry Weinger for putting his heart and soul into it. He added quite a bit of studio chatter to the cd.
The male vocal is now apparently likely to be FRANK WILSON but not Frank "Do I Love You" Wilson but Frank "I'm a good buddy of Barry White's" Wilson. Are you confused yet? If you are't, you should be!! David Gordon..tell them what you told me!!
I shall be in the second row in the centre at the Palladium for Martha, Freda and Edwin's concert.
An all nighter, even a late nighter, is out of the question for me if it's before 31 January - the date all tax returns have to be in! I am sure you will have a good time. Ask them for a tribute to Hank Cosby for me please.
Hopefully, I will be seeing the Originals in Manchester in May.

It is an excellent value CD full of interesting bits and pieces you would never think exist. That first track bookend - superb - actually hearing the musicians talking and chatting after the aborted take. Wonder what Mr Gordy thinks about all this?
I know my seat numbers at the Palladium already, 23 & 24 I think - be strange if we were sat behind you. Apparently the two front rows of customers at this venue are responsible for purchasing the ice cream for the third row customers (who can clap their hands, but not rattle their jewellery) in the intermission should there be one.
The Originals - wow! I love their Marvin Gaye produced stuff. One track called 'You're the One' I just love the harmonies and refrain, especially when the female backing teases in just after the men folk. Also, I love the 'stereo' where you can pan and take a listen to things in isolation. Wonderful. Bobby Eli - This track does send shivers up my back!! I owe you an apology, but I know you will not hold it against me......
Where are The Originals appearing John?? Why are they not down here or shouldn't I ask? Talking of Edwin Starr, he and his wonderful band appeared at our Xmas do a couple of years ago now. He is a great great performer and has the audience in the palm of his hand no matter what age they are or indeed, what age he is! I sneaked onto his 'bus' when he finished and met him and his family! Then I realised the bus had left the Sky compound and I was on my way somewhere else! I managed to get off, but you know, he was heading up North I think, and it may have been in my interests to stay on board! He really appreciates the fans over here tremendously and is a great ambassador for the Motown sound and all that he does now.
I may well approach someone on Saturday night and request something that Mr Cosby was involved in. Could you recommend a fitting 'stomper' or something that will make those not so aware of the background boys, dance and be happy, but still be informed??
thanks

The Dalton Boys "I've Been Cheated" tends to get people going...Uptight too. But just look at my BRIEFEST of lists...so many to choose from.
Jim Stewart is in the second row at the Palladium too. I am the one with the dark glasses and NO WALLET!
The Originals are appearing for Richard Sterling's 50th birthday..I assume it will be in Manchester. In fact I am sure it is there. I went to see Brenda Holloway and Kim Weston in Manchester - a great crowd of people there, it was nice to be with people of a similar interest. MInd you, that was a night and a half...I gulped when I heard for the first time "He Who Picks A Rose", "Baby Hit and Run" (Joe Stubbs), "If You Ever Get Your Hands On Love".....but smiled like a cheshire cat when I heard the Velvelettes on "Lonely Lonely Girl Am I" and "A Bird In The Hand".
I left about 8:30 in the morning - I was like a zombie...

At last I've finally listened through to the Complete Duets, and I'm enthralled. (Rather poignantly, it was a Christmas present from my father - by request - and I only found it "hidden" away at his flat earlier this week. I didn't have the heart to listen to it till yesterday.)
Apart from the unissued material, I know these wonderful records inside-out, but the superbly clear and vibrant transfers here are almost like hearing these well-loved songs for the first time. My compliments to Jeff Willens.
A bouquet to Harry W for supervising such a wonderful project - his loving care will be matched only by the gratitude and love of Marvin and Tammi's fans, so his dedication will be appreciated more than he'll probably realise.
Incidentally, if the previously-released tracks were indeed transferred from the final mix stereo masters, then the "extras" like count-ins, and Marvin's practice-lines on You're All I Need have been found (on the multitrack?) and edited back on for this issue. An essential part of preparing a stereo master is "topping and tailing" each track, to remove such "unwanted" material. The fact that these little artifacts have been searched out and restored shows real dedication, well above and beyond the call of duty.
Harry - you're the man.

And don't forget, above everything else, it was your father that got it for you.
I am sure he has a big knowing smile on his face.
