Can anyone tell me if there's a musical connection between The Pyramids "I'm The Playboy" on Sonbert, and The Marvelletes "Playboy" on Tamla ?
The Pyramids song was released about a month after the Marvelletes song, and was written by Bateman, Sanders and Wylie. I have a feeling it may be an answer song.
Cheers, Graham

Hi Graham,

Haven't heard the Pyramid's disc but I've
always assumed it's an answer to the Marvelettes'
hit.

I think I've a lineup for the Pyramids somewhere
- if I remember correctly they're connected
to the Satintones.

"I'm The Playboy" was issued nationally on
MGM's Cub label which picked up a few masters
from Sonbert and Correc-Tone.

I'll post fuller details when I've had a chance
to check.

Davie G.

Happy New Year everyone! The Pyramids consisted of Vernon Williams (lead), Bobby Jones (first tenor), Robert Gibson (second tenor), Damond Rockland (baritone), Norman Worthy (bass). Vern is the only one from this group who sang with the Satintones, and he was also the lead and song writer for the Royal Holidays (before the Pyramids). Their recordings were 1) Sonbert 82861 - I'm The Playboy b/w Crying - 1962 2) Cub 9112 - I'm the Playboy b/w Crying - 1962; 3) Vee-Jay 489 - What is Love b/w Shakin Fit - 1962

Vern is still in Detroit, doing some singing, but not performing. He is working on a CD with Jay Johnson (who was bass for the Diablos & the 4 Sonics). Things were put on hold for awhile due to some health problems Vern had. I'll keep you all posted for anything new coming up with them.
Thank you.
