I understand that Carol Kaye filed a defamation lawsuit sometime in the last year or so against Allan Slutsky and Bob Lee because they published online information disputing her claim to have played the bass parts on Motown songs such as "Reach Out I'll Be There" (see www.bassland.net/jamerson.html ), otherwise credited to James Jamerson. Anybody know what became of that effort? To me this is somewhat reminiscent of jazz drummer Bernard Purdie's claim to have played many drum parts on Beatles records.

Hey Steve

That case was dropped when Carole's lawyer was presented with the proof we'd obtained that disproved her claims. (Subpoened union contracts, Motown studio logs that contradicted her work logs, signed notarized affidavits from Motown producers, etc.)

The case against Bob Lee was based on his online activities in defence of Jamerson. That suit was also dropped. As for me, I've kept a low profile in regard to the debate. My activities over the last decade in this regard were limited to one post on a site called "The Bottom Line" (which eventually wound up on Bob's "Basslands" site) and a photocopied flyer sent out to a handful of people who had bought the Jamerson book and asked questions about the Kaye/Jamerson controversy.

Carol is a great bass player and I have no desire to see her disgraced. But I'm also James Jamerson's biographer so I have to defend his legacy.

anyone out there who doesn't own a copy of allan's book should try and get a hold of one.

in particular allan, i love the pics taken inside the clubs:-
blues unlimited on detroit's west side
ben's high chapparal on gratiot at burns?
the chit-chat on 12th
20 grand on 14th
apex bar on oakland

apart from the 20 grand, it is difficult to find pics of these venues.

there are other uncredited venue pics in the book :-
page62
page59
page47
page43
page42 (top pic)
page37 (blues unlimited?)

do you have any detail on the above locations allan?

graham - do you know which street 'blues unlimited' was on?

David

Pages 62, 59, and 47 I can't help you with but the pic on P.43 is the Chit Chat, P.42 is Baker's Keyboard Lounge, and you're correct on P. 37 (it's Blues Unlimited).

I'm downtown yesterday and I run into a guitar player friend of mine.In the course of our conversation of his musical career, he mentions doing some things with Carol Kaye in the mid 70"s. He told me she was teaching bass at that time in the local music store I hang at. I said " What....Carol Kaye??? WHAT!!!

So I informed him of the present flap going on regarding her claims to playing on some of the earlier Motown things. He told me she never said anything to him about that but did mention her work with The Beachboys. Small world!

Hey Ralph

It sounds like Ms Kaye's world was very small at that time if she was giving music lessons - or was it a very upmarket music store? ;o)

I wonder if she taught any of her "authentic Motown" basslines??

Three days ago I went onto Carol's web site under the name of Trevor, on her chat page. I mentioned that I "accidently" stumbled upon this interesting site and entered the url and the name of the thread and the directions on how to add commentary. As of yet my comment was not officially posted on her page. I WONDER WHY THAT IS???
Let's see if she has the Cohunas to log on to Soulful Detroit!!!!!!

Hello Ralph and Soulman:

Hey soulman I wonder if you ever worked with my close friend Andrew Smith. We were very close here in Detroit and when he moved out east, his home was in East Brunswick, N.J., we kept in close contact. He died about a year and a half ago from Prostate Cancer (late diagnosis) and I miss him dearly. Ralph knew Andrew well too.

His Dad died of Alheimers and he knew well of the problems and when Sue (MY WIFE'S), Father was diagnosed with it prepared us for the stages of this testbook disease.

Best,
Ed Wolfrum

Hello Ed,
First of all, may I thank you for coming onto the forum.Being a Philly-detroit-o- phile, I have been aware of your skills for a long time.
I was in the Philly equivelent of the Funk Brothers known as MFSB, as the primary guitarist and like Dennis Coffey was in Detroit, I was the "white" guy although no one EVER thought of me as being white, and I was like the Swiss Army Knife of guitarists being that I could do itall, and I did.
Around, 1974, during a time that producer Thom Bell and myself were talking shop one day, we discussed fusing some Detroit players along with us, especially since certain individuals were becoming "difficult" at times.
We were getting ready to do a new Spinners album and looked at one another and said that since the Spinners are from Detroit, why don't we try this combination on their next album.
So Andrew Smith was chosen as the drummer and Babbitt on bass, and the juxtaposition of them with us was pure magic, both musically and professionally. We recorded Rubberband Man,Love Don't Love Nobody, Sadie, Sweet Love Of Mine all on that initial group of sessions, and ever from that first time , Andrew and Babbitt worked with us a lot.
They would tell loads of Motown stories, and use that "secret language" thing that they perfected with the Funk Brothers.
Incidentally, I first met Babbitt at Tera Shirma , studio B not long it opened in 1968 during a session for Mike Terry.

I was listening to a Motown Internet radio station (right now as a matter of fact)http://www.live365.com/stations/291246 , and as a long time bassist , I was reminded of the controversy surrounding MS Kaye. I am glad that this matter was resolved in court. I'm listening right now and I can tell the difference between a "PickPlayer" and My main man James Jamerson. I was listening, thinking about the claims the Ms Kaye has made , and it made me mad again. But I'm glad I came (great site ... I'm 53 )here and found this matter to be resolved.

PS thank you Allan for the great book , I got it 12 years ago and can't find anywhere .
