Ok folks,

We all like to think of ourselves as hip & cool. But, keeping it real, we all have some of those songs that we secretly love, that we'd never let most of our friends hear us play. What songs are you guilty pleasures. Come on, you can tell us. You're among friends & we'll never tell!!

Now me, I have a weakness for Hermans' Hermits "Dandy" & "A Kind Of Hush". I have several more that my friends would disown me for liking. I guess that I'll list them later.

Well...

I am eccletic in my musical tastes anyhow, so I will put here what may surprise a few of my friends (and they know I dont care what they think anyhow, LOL...):

All Tom Jones' music - the man could just 'straight out' sing...highlighting 'Pussycat', 'I Who Have Nothing', 'Delilah' 'Polk Salad Annie'...

Elvis Presley - EVERYTHING, but highlighting Return To Sender, Big Boss Man, Didja Ever?, Little Jeannie, Jailhouse Rock, Cant Help Falling In Love With You, and a few more. It's not so much that they dont know I listen to Elvis, they know but I think it would surprise them to see how much I listen and watch him on a regular basis. In fact, I have converted one or two of them to be Elvis fans.

Rolling Stones - my Mother even digs them, in fact SHE is the reason why I like the Stones right now. I play Brown Sugar, Tumbling Dice, You Cant Always Get what you want, Angie, Under My Thumb on a regular basis.

Beatles - I LOVE ELEANOR RIGBY. In fact I love the Beatles. Too many to name here, but that intro on Lady Madonna is a butt kicker. Listen to it through headphones. Slammin'.

To add to all of this, I have a fetish for classical music. I was taught to play a few things in my younger years on woodwinds, and I keep that going through recordings now. Havent owned an clarinet or oboe in years. I can still play a little, need to buy one soon.

Juice I like this topic. :-)

I have a few... offhand, the first Heart album, 'Dreamboat Annie', and cheesy dancehall songs whose titles escape me, they're usually pulled offa mix tapes like the Chinese Laundry crew out of Trinidad who were busted a few years ago... Cat Stevens would be another... I'll stop there. I'm having a whole lotaa no-fun with a breakup these days so more sappy soft-rock type rekkids have found their way out of the deep-freeze & back near my turntable... at this moment I have Dream Warriors "Subliminal Sublimation" and the Beasties' "License To Ill" on, but I don't really consider that a 'guilty' pleasure, they're actually among of the more consistent hip hop productions I dig (as opposed to the majority of releases that only have 1 or 2 distinguishable songs and a bunch of filler).

Sign My Pitty On The Runny Sty was a smash hit in Chris Rocks' movie "Pootietang". Pootietang also had a song that was a smash in the movie, that was comprised on nothing but silence!!!

I rather liked that one too!!!

Juice, you go and dig out the ones that I leave out. At first for some reason,I didn't get it, I think I was reading too fast. I have not seen that episode in awhile, she was doing her thing on I Love You But I Ain't Gonna Be Your Fool(had her little dance steps, but what were Fred & Barney doing behind her?) The Littlest Lamb, aw, that's so cute:-):-):-) When cartoons were COOL.

Okay, I also like Paw doing his best Barry White on "Do The Bear", playing the guitar with his little back-up singers-LOL:-):-):-) you all know the cartoon!!!!!

Charise, glad to hear that I'm not the only one to dance around to the the B-52's! LOL! One thing I saw entire groups of people do that I refrained from back in the day was during "Rock Lobster", hit the floor and flop around like a fish out of water during the "Rock Lobster....DOWN...DOWN..down.. ." part. Not only was it hilariously surreal to witness, you felt like you were in some C-grade sci-fi movie.

Actually I kinda wish I had let loose and flopped around back then. I'm too old to flip or flop now!

AHEM!!! This here song, it ain't so bad. It's the cutest little song you ever had. Those of you who will not sing, you must be playing with your own....

OOPS!!! Sorry 'bout that ;)

Here we go Jrlo (Sing along with Juice, y'all), now this song is deep.

Mommy told me something, a little kid should know.
It's all about the devil & I've learned to hate him so. (Hate??? wow, that's kinda harsh)
She said he causes trouble, when you let him in the room.
He will never ever leave you if your heart is filled with gloom.

So let the sun shine in, face it with a grin.
Smilers never lose & frowners never win.
So let the sunshine in, face it with a grin.
Open up your heart & let the sunshine in.

When you are unhappy, the devil wears a grin.
But oh, he starts to running when the light comes pouring in.
I know he'll be unhappy, 'cause I'll never wear a frown.
Maybe if we keep on smiling, he'll get tired of hanging 'round.

If I forget to say my prayers, the devil wears a grin.
But he feels so awful awful, when he sees me on my knees.
So, if you're full of trouble & you never seem to win.
Just open up your heart & let the sun shine in.

(Back to chorus) NOW BRING IT ON HOME......

LET THE SUN SHINE IN !!!

Just another of the one million & one pieces of useless trivia stored in this brain of mine.

I also like She's A Woman, Penny Lane by The Beatles...shucks, there's too many to choose from.

Then there's Stop, Stop, Stop by The Hollies. I was in the first grade when that came out. Hey, I had the best of both musical worlds.

Oh yes, Gary Wrights' Dream Weaver was another one that I loved. Reminds me of running Track in my Sophomore year in High School.

I see that you and Juice have also included Midnight At The Oasis on your list, as did I, don't you just love the Maria's phrasing and how it goes so well with that kickbutt music?:-):-):-)

Juice: Ditto on Dream Weaver, my sister and I often talk about how we like that song(that one is on my list also):-):-):-)

Destruction: :-):-):-):-) 12-step???

Charise, I probably love everything about "Midnight At The Oasis" great song, the right singer, etc. I like her phrasing a lot on that too. She was the perfect singer for it.

Heh heh, I think "Jackie Blue" is cool too.

Hey Jr,

Yes, I too liked Bob Lind's Elusive Butterfly. I was in the first grade & remember it well. From that time period, I also liked Brian Hyland's "The Joker Went Wild" (Batman was our favorite show then) & The Cyrkle's "Red Rubber Ball".

AAHHH.....THE INNOCENCE OF YOUTH :-)

Hey Jr :-)

Now this song is not a guilty pleasure, as it is certainly a classic. However, what you said brings to mind The O'Jays song, Brandy. People made love to & danced slow to this song. Big, muscle bound tough guys, cried over this song. I mean, hard ass men slobbered over this song. The catch was this:

IT WAS ABOUT A DOG!!!!! A LOVE ODE TO A RUNAWAY DOG!!!!

Think about it, making love to a love song to a dog!!!! Kinda scary, isn't it???

RUFF, RUFF!!! BOW WOW WOW YIPPY YO, YIPPY YAY :-)

Shannon was about a dog. Henry Gross' song shows up fairly often on the eerrgghhh threads.

Shannon has gone I hope
She's drifing out to sea
She always loved to swim that way
Maybe she'll find an island
With a shady tree
Just like the one in our backyard....

Maybe you're thinking about Every Mother's Son.

Most of the songs mentioned here are songs I like, but I really can't call 'em guilty pleasures if I sang 'em out in public at karaoke, can I?

A couple I haven't seen listed here:
"You're Having My Baby"--Paul Anka
"I Don't Like to Sleep Alone"--Paul Anka
"I Believe There's Nothing Stronger Than Our Love"--Paul Anka w/ Odia Coates (she has a bigger role in this song than "Having My Baby")
"Brought Up In New York, Brought Down In L.A."--Paul Anka
"Hold Me Till the Morning Comes"--Paul Anka
"Feelings"--Morris Albert (probably the only person here who can handle this song...LOL)
Robert Goulet
Steve and Eydie
and probably more...

Best,

The Rather Eclectic Mark

I heard a track from the recent cd by Donny Osmond the other day. He's put lyrics to George Benson's Breezin', and it really sounds pretty good.

I remember Donny was supposed to do a group thing on Qwest in the early '80s. He also did the scratch vocals in LA on songs like "Not Like This," etc. I always thought that Donny could have made a great r&b/pop album around that time. Good to see him picking up where he left off...

Billy Idol's acoustic versions of White Wedding and Rebel Yell have a power and drive not matched by the electric versions. Those are songs I don't have, but, like the movie TRON, if they show up (on TV or occasionally radio), I HAVE to listen. But then, this is from a guy who willingly purchased a copy of Feelings today.

This week it's been Modest Mouse.
"If the world is at large why should I remain"

Every time I come here to read the updates, I find myself reaching for the "bag" before I get to the end.

First Nosey lowers the bar with Englebert, then Dyva chimes in with her.

Then Medusa and Charise try to close down confessionals in 8 states with their list.

Just as JohnE, Moe, and SoulSis try to restore a bit dignity to the thread, Dyva loses her dam mind, and starts talking bout starting a "soft rock" thread.

LadyM, having just fallen from a plane post her list...and since she fell on Medusa, we get even more um um um stuff from her.

Juice redeems everyone above by listing the brilliant "Sign My Pitty On The Runny Sty" by Pootietang.

Normalcy is back in the form of short but tasteful lists from JohnD, Bobby, Juice and Douglasm

Zebop then scares me away for a week by opening with the OMDevils, closing with the A P Project and announcing that that's just the tip of iceberg. Where's the Titanic when you really need it.

Jrlo's John Denver confession brought all the soul up outta me and spilled it all over the floor. Then Mark's list comes in like an 800 pound gorilla and starts jumping up and down on it.

Thank God Juice mentioned Pootie again....WHEW.

Douglasm,
I know that you didn't REALLY willingly purchase a copy of feelings....it's obvious someone has you in their sniper sight and you're forced to say that...once you're released from this "situation", I'm sure you can tell us the real story. And I KNOW there's a real story because:

"In the midnight hour, she cried more more more
With a rebel yell, she screamed more more more."

Ain't no way you willingly listen, let alone buy Feelings, after listening to that.

Well.....
.....actually it was on a compulation. I needed The Rockford Files theme for a bit on the radio show, I like Freddie Fender's Before The Next Teardrop Falls, and needed Smokin' In The Boy's Room to remind me of my declining youth.

There actually is no story behind the Billy Idol. I like acoustic treatments of "hard edged" music. Ann & Nancy Wilson's versions of Pappa Was A Rolling Stone and Battle of Evermore come to mind, and Billy's versions bring a different slant to his songs. Hell, KISS's acoustic Rock and Roll All Night is worth a second listen.

This admission doesn't revoke my privelidges, does it?

I picked up a cheap, used two disc anthology called Strange Magic: The Best of Electric Light Orchestra recently and have to admit that they were alot better than I recalled. Not that I'd want to let everyone know how much of this material works for me.

ELO-mastermind Jeff Lynne was definately an underrated songwiter. Some of that string section overkill may have sometimes accurately labelled ELO as pompous and full of hot air back in the day but the songs still work because Lynne was an unabashed Beatle fanatic and his compositions were impeccably crafted. That doesn't mean that they were ever very hip. Nevertheless, I've been digging many of their hits that I didn't pay too much attention to when they were current, like "Turn To Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Shine a Little Love", "Last Train to London" plus songs I've always enjoyed like "Don't Bring Me Down", "Do Ya", and "Hold on Tight".

For some reason, they seem a lot less uncool now.

I have a thing for groups that don't actually exist. Usually, they've been created for a TV show or a film. They're the silly B movies of music and I don't normally play them with other people around (I have a reputation to maintain :-) )

The Hardy Boys:
Sink or Swim
Love and Let Love
Those Country Girls

The Wonders:
Dance with Me Tonight
All My Only Dreams

The Vicksburgs:
Drive Faster

Del Paxton:
Time to Blow

The Partridge Family:
I'm On the Road
Singing My Song
I Can Hear Your Heartbeat
Umberella Man
I'm Here, You're Here

The Archies:
Seventeen Ain't Young
Ride, Ride, Ride
Hide and Seek

The artist's name is Rock Roll. The tune itself is listed under William Hanna & Joe Barbera, but it was more than likely written by Hoyt Curtin. I can't find anything that actually names the singer which leads me to believe it was one of their regular voice actors.
