Let me put on my thinking cap Medusa & I'll get back at you on this!!!

Off the top of my head, I would say the O'Jays. Weren't they from Canton, Ohio? Their first hit was on the California based Imperial label. They then recorded for Minit & Bell, which were New York based. At least Bell was. Then of course, they had MAJOR success on Philadelphia International!!

Jeffrey Osborne is from Providence, Rhode Island. I always find that amusing for some reason.

Everybody is from Detroit and Philadelphia...lol...

Oh yeah...forgot about Jeffrey Osborne being born there!

Phyllis Hyman was originally from Pittsburgh, PA but recorded for PIR at one point...I know she also recorded for Buddha. Marvin Gaye was from Washington, DC and recorded for Motown.

I don't know where the Spinners were from, but they have always made Detroit their home. The Isley Brothers were from Ohio and they recorded for Motown in the 60s.

Johnflat,
After having lived in Cincinnati for 12 years, I just grouped it all together. And those radio stations didn't hesitate saying Cincinnati's own-The Isley Brothers" back in the 70's.......

I heard that, Moe. And didn't LA and Babyface start out in Cinci with the DEELE?
Dyva, I think Ike hails from St. Louis.
Sidebar: Contrary to what the movie portrayed, as a kid I heard that it was TINA who smashed the cake in IKE's face during that skirmish......

I thought James Brown was from GA.

David Ruffin was originally from Whynot, Mississippi. Dennis Edwards, Eddie Kendricks, and I think Paul Williams were from Birmingham AL. Not sure where Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams were from...maybe from Alabama as well?

Hi LadyMystique;
No, JB was born in S.C. near where he lives now. When his mother abandoned him as a small child his father took him to live in an Aunt's whore house in Augusta, GA. early on.

Medusa:
The Tavares brothers' ancestry traces back to Cape Verde. The group were born & raised in New Beford, Massachusetts. I believe the elder Tavares spoke Portuguese.

...it seems that all the Motown/Hitsville, Philly Sounds, most of the other popular music, etc. actually were made popular from singers/musicians originally from the south...isn't that something?

Otis Williams of the Temptations was born in Texarkana, Texas, but moved to Detroit around the age of 10. I'm not sure about Melvin. Does anyone else know?

Lady Mystique, according to this site

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/aliol liew/from/crizik

and a few others, Woodson was born in Detroit.
But I don't know how authoritative any of those are; I Googled on his name and the word "born." I got curious after not being able to find the info in my encyclopedia of soul music. Hope this helps.

Bob F.
