For some reason, there were always some crazy things that scared me as a kid. For example, movie ads in newspapers & train stations always scared me, I just don't know why. I remember fixing the chain in the toilet bowl as a kid. There was a movie out called McKennas' Gold & just as I adjusted the chain, the copper pipe broke & water sprayed in my face. I almost had a fit, all that I could see was that stupid movie ad. I damn near ran through the wall trying to get out of there. When I was younger, it was the movie ad from Tales Of The Brothers Grimm in Cinerama that scared me. I swear that I just don't know why things like that used to bother me. It was probably remembering lying in the dark as a kid & imagining the image of the boogeyman coming to get me. As a kid, I always slept with the covers covering my eyes, with my nose poking out. Well, that's just a few of my crazy childhood fears! I'll think about it, I'm sure that there are more |

Hey All, Hey Juice. LOL! Thanks. Stephen King's book - what was it called "Stand?" It was the one about the clowns that terrorized the children of this neighborhood, and they lived underground. I couldn't believe I was sitting there reading that book - although it scared me to read it. I couldn't put it down. LOL! I read another one of his books that also spooked me. At the time - I read about four books by him. He does have a different take on things doesn't he? The "Exorcist" scared me. I couldn't watch it now. And "Rosemary's Baby" is not a movie I would enjoy watching even though it wouldn't spook me like it did when I first saw it. Scary movies period sort of scare me. If I watch one - then every little noise in the house alerts and spooks me. Then - I'll pull the covers over my head. LOL! I also was never the type that liked to sit around listening to scary stories - and especially when I was a girlscout. LOL! (Message edited by gogogirl on July 23, 2004) |

HAAA! HAAAA!!! Juice the only thing I can't supply is my laugh track!! I was crying when I got to the 2nd paragraph!!! I remember being scared when I would here the song Baby Love. Why, because of the foot-stomping at the beginning, I always thought they(the Supremes were coming after me, which is crazy, when they are not in my house!!!!! Don't you laugh!! Okay that bogeyman thing is no joke, I too used to do that or it would be like Eddie Murphy said, you would stare at a chair full of clothes or something and after a while, they would start to move!! We weren't really helping ourselves, because if it was going to get us, we sure made it easy!!! On Fridays after my sister and I watched TV until it practically went off, we would turn the lights off and run upstairs. I just never liked hearing the house settle, that scared me too. Usually, we were home by ourselves, when these things occured! Dionne Warwick's version of Do You Know The Way To S.J., scared me too, the beginning again. I laugh now when I think about those things. |

My parents had it on and I couldnt help but listen. I was very, VERY young but knew enough to be scared. I had a vivid imagination, as a lot of Piscean children do so that only intensified the experience. And anything with the sound of a theremin(not counting Good Vibrations, that came later) made me shudder because it conjured visions of otherwordly experiences. But then again, I kinda an "other wordly kinda guy, capice??!$^*) |

Whenever we went to visit cousin Catherine there was this haunted looking house with opague windows on the 3rd floor. My father would say, "Oh, you better watch out there's the chicken hawks house! There's Sneaky Pete, Squeedy Neck & Juicy!" I swore I could see their shadows through the opaque windows about to pounce down on our car! Boy, my sisters and I ducked down in the back seat every time we passed the Chicken Hawk's House! LOL! I rode by that house about 10 years ago and it was not at all scarey! Young minds are so easily influenced. |

When i was about 7 or 8, there was a drugstore with a soda fountain near us. Every time I used to go there , there usually was a "strange" looking person sitting there on a stool whom I couldnt quite decipher the sexuality of. So one day I asked my mom about it and she discretely whispered in my ear "um Eli, thats a lesbian'!! So in my childlike innocence I asked " well mom, what part of Lesbia are they from"?? So she then told me that there is no such place as Lesbia and then she tried to explain in broken english/Yiddish what they were and I became afraid of lesbians for several years thereafter, until I became a man and I learned to appreciate them! BTW..One time while atending a theatrical event with my mom, someone announced that a certain person was a "thespian" and I got up and ran out of the theater in fright!! |

When I was a kid about 5 or 6, my mother would make me take naps and me being a restless kind of kid, I couldn't keep still. I would jump out of bed and run down the halls. My great-grandmother would then get a large sheet, cut holes in it for her eyes, drape it over herself and come out into the hallway. She would stand in a spot where the light would hit her in such a way to make her look really spooky. She would call me by name in this deep, raspy voice and tell me that if I did not get back in the bed that she was going to eat me up. Me, being a little dumb kid totally believed in ghosts. I would then run back into my room, jump into my bed and pull the covers over me all the while shivering until my nap was over. I didn't realize until later that it was really my great-grandmother. |

Hey All, LOL Eli - I used to hear about those scary radio programs. And how about the music that would start - when one knew something scary was about to happen. Many of folk listened to the radio for all kinds of programming back then. Listening to the scary stories/series was definitely one of the reasons. LOL! Can one imagine how scared some of the children were upon hearing some of that stuff on the radio - like you Eli? LOL! I hear y'all about mice and rats too. When I used to go visit my grandmother in B'ham during the summers - I always shared a room w/my cousin. My first summer staying with them after returning from Germany - my cousin told me about Ben the mouse that - I guess used to live for the most part in the wall in her room. Yes - she had named the mouse Ben after MJ's hit record. LOL! I saw him once - and jumped on the bed. My cousin told me that Ben was so sweet and that he wouldn't bother us. I looked at her like she had gone mad. Anyway - even the next summer - Ben was still around. At least my cousin said he was. I couldn't believe it. One day - I went bouncing into the kitchen. When I got there my grandmother told me to look over there. She had put some poisen down on the floor - and I saw this big rat dying. Mama said - "Look - he's drunk." I started yelping and ran from the kitchen. It did look a little comical the way that rat moved like it was drunk - but I didn't wait to see her pick it up. LOL! One of the scariest times of my childhood was when my grandmother used to tell us that her deceased husband came back to see her a couple of times. My brother even agreed with her once - that he had seen Skippy too. My mouth fell open as she told us about seeing Skippy - and that he visited her. I told her that I hoped I never saw him. My cousin was afraid after hearing that stuff too. It used to get to me when she would tell us that - and especially whilst lying down. Every little noise made me wonder if Skippy was walking around. I asked my grandmother what did he want - and she said he just wanted to say hello and that he was alright. I never liked to be home in that house alone - and especially when Mama was at choir rehearsal - my aunt was working the late shift - and my cousin was in another room. I would go find and fetch her. Too much! LOL! (Message edited by gogogirl on July 27, 2004) |

The commercial from Betty Davis' movie, The Nanny used to scare me. It was Nov. 1965 & we had just moved from Queens & were living temporarily in The Mohawk Hotel on Green Avenue in Brooklyn. Well, we had just come from the store, got inside & started watching TV. After a half hour or so, suddenly the TV screen began to shrink. Suddenly, the room went dark. We looked out the window & saw nothing but moonlight. I was 5 & scared as hell. One of the last things that ni remember seeing was the commercial from that damn movie & I was scared out of my wits. I didn't stray far from my mother that night. All that I remember is that horns were honking & people had flashlights, directing traffic. People were helping each other, quite unlike the wonderful experience of the '77 Blackout. |

"PSYCHO" scared the hell out of me. No showers in any motel room, thank-you. And here is one that sticks out in my mind. This must have been about 1960 or so. I was a mere tyke (trying to make myself feel just a bit younger) when I saw this show on TV. The episode dealt with a Christmas parade. Santa Claus was riding on a float (or maybe in a convertible...I can't remember that part), and a sniper takes him out and kills him, I think. That warped me for life. I loved how deliciously evil it was to blow Santa away in front of mobs of happy, shiny people. So now you know the rest of my story. Does anybody else remember such a program? Cam |

Christopher Lee in "Horror of Dracula" The way those damn birds sounded in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". If real birds sounded like that, I'd never leave my house! There were a few episodes of "The Twilight Zone" that kept me up at night, like the one with William Shatner seeing the gremlin on the airplane wing. I went to a military prep school for a couple of years and in '68 one Saturday night 70 or 80 of us were at the moviehouse in town. We didn't know or care what was on, 'cause we were off campus and that was a treat in itself. The movie started; it was a cheapo black and white and we let out a slight groan of disappointment. Didn't look too promising, something with a cheesy title: "Night of the Living Dead". When it was over, none of us got up, nobody moved. Everyone was thinking of the walk in the dark under the street lights back to the campus. Finally, the ranking officer said we had to get going to make it back before curfew. We all got up as one and, in a singular instance, walked back to the school in one large clump. I had bad dreams for two weeks. (Message edited by john dixon on August 02, 2004) |

John, The Twilight ZOne episodes that still trip me out are: THe Departmetn Store. When the mannequins came alive and waited theri turn to go out when one of them took to long to come back... And the "Auschwitz Death Camp'...when the man who murdered all of the Jews went back to face his demons, and the demons came and got his butt... And the Telephone Line...when the phone kept ringing in the house and no answer, but when they traced the line it was a severed line that was buried in a graveyard... Still trips me out... |

I was scared of: The tv show, Dark Shadows (scared the crap out of me especially that creepy song "Quentin's theme) The Outer Limits...it looks campy now, but when I was little those fake aliens gave me nightmares! The movie the Birds The movie St. Valentines day massacre..especially the end when they all got blown away..my mom took us to see that...don't ask why.... I remember one incident that scared me, in 1968 around the time when Robert Kennedy was shot a little girl was brutally beaten by her mother. On the front page of the NY Post a few days after the funeral they ran a LARGE picture of this poor little girl who was so badly beaten she didn't look like a little girl. That gave me nightmares since she was about my age. |

Hey Jrlo, What I remember about The St. Valentines Day Massacre was the running commentary of the narrator. His voice sounded as though he could've used some Ex-Lax. Today, the Post is regarded as a paper that always shows the most violent, bloody pictures possible. I didn't realize that they were doing that even when we we kids. Now, I'll tel;l you what scares me now.....The Post does. That paper has some very scary viewpoints & IMO, the way that they portray certain political parties & segments of society is disgusting & skewed. What's scary is that they do so unashamedly. I'm glad that they do though, it's nice to read how some folks really think. |

Hey Juice! I remember that narrator!!! He was as creepy as the flick!! When he would talk about each gangster he would say "On the last day of his life..." Yecchh!! I still can't watch that movie! Yeah I remember the Post was considered to be "tabloid" back then..and in those days being called tabloid was an insult..it's now a badge of honor! Isn't that sick? We use to read the DAily News, and if the news stand was out of the Daily News we would get the Post!!! |

Hey Jr, I haven't seen that movie in years. I know that it's kinda regarded as being a "campy" movie, kinda over the top. I always read the Post for its Sports section. They always had great sports writers. As for its Op-ed page....that's another matter. |

Eli & Vonnie may remember this: In Philly in the early 60s @ Halloween all the children were afraid of the "Green Lady"! She was coming to the schools to "get" the children. I actually saw her turning the corner at 23rd & Lehigh Ave! I swear to God! |

ladylove, My fave line from the movie Uncle Buck is when John Candy flips a quarter at the school principal after verbally castrating her for not letting the kids have fun and says "Take this quarter...go downtown....and pay somebody to gnaw that thing off your face." or something like that. |
