Greetings All,

Wasn't there a TV program called "Name That tune?" LOL! Or was that - "What's My Line" - or both?

Can anyone name the tune that has these lines in them for instance?

1. "Don't call the doctor"
2. "Please don't leave me girl"
3. "Just a little bit"
4. "That's how long I'm going to love you"
5. "I love you and nobody else"

Can anyone name the tunes?

GGoGirl: I can hear the chorus coming in right after that "I need you baby, strung out over you, Ineed you baby, I need you ba-a-aby, I'm strung out over you" I think it's a New York RCA record -Main Ingredient? I know I have the record, but '70s to me is like the FUTURE to anyone else.

I was working in Africa, The Middle East and Far East, so heard little soul music. I lived in The Netherlands, and sometimes listened to "The Soul Show" on Nederland 3 (radio). But my knowledge of '70s music is pretty poor (even though I was also part-time in The business in the late '70s).

Right now, I'm in The Netherlands, and away from my 45s, so I can't go look at the record. Somebody else will likely answer this before it comes back to my mind. There's no way I'll forget a song I knew well in the '50s & '60s, but I'm lucky if I remember ANYTHING from that recent!

All,

Yes Medusa. "I Truly Truly Believe" was the bomb. It is one of my all time fave songs by the Tempts. How did I miss that one?

Btw - I picked up Diana's greatest hits CD. It is so strong and sweet.

So which song does this line belong?

#9-You Better Go-Derek Martin

I guessed wrongly, before. "If We Start Giving" is from "Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand" by Diana Ross (notice I realised it was an Ashford/Simpson composition).

GoGoGirl: I worked as an Economics Consultant and Environmental Planner/Assessor (water and air quality) and Civil Engineer (water and sewer, airport planning, waste management and city planning) for U.N. International (3rd World) development projects in Jordan, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, India and Malaysia from 1971-1989. I also visited Iraq, Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, and "Palestine". I was also an economics consultant and advisor for Canadian and US Native American ("Indian") Tribes during a large part of that period. I was one of the people advising them to use their treaty rights and exceptions as means to make money. That included the idea to operate gambling casinos (something for which I don't feel the slightest bit guilty).

#8. "Love Makes The World Go Round"-Dion Jackson & Mary Wells

#4 These are also words from "The Old Matchmaker" by Barbara Acklin, but I really DOUBT that that's the song you're thinking of in this quiz.

#7 These are also words from "You Say You Love Me" by Dee Edwards, but I'd bet the farm that that's not the song you're thinking of here.

#3 and #10 ring bells, but I can't think right now. Of course, I saw the new quiz too late, Destruction already got 3 I knew.

OK Guys & Gals;
I thought the response would be better. Destruction & Robb knew one answer each. Perhaps if 'kev-lo' would visit the clubhouse once in awhile, he could answer more on my 60's list since he has similar tastes.
Here are the answers:
1.)"Don't Have To Shop Around"-The Madlads
2.)"I Do"-Linda Jones
3.)"Once Is Not Enough"-The O'Jays
4.)"Can I"-'Smitty' & The Manhattans
5.)"World Of Fantasy"-The 5 Stairsteps
6.)"Hurt"-Little Anthony & Imperials/'Gerald' & Manhattans/Timi Yuro.
7.)"Cassanova"-Ruby Andrews
8.)"Go Away Little Boy"-Marlena Shaw
9.)"You Better Go"-Derek Martin
10.)"Embraceable You"-Jimmy Scott :-) Our Honeymoon Song!!

Yes, GogoGirl, there was a program about naming tunes; we didn't have TV when I was young, but I can remember sitting by the radio and listening to the first few notes of a song and having to name that tune. It might have been called "Name That Tune." They would start out with one note, and keep increasing the number of notes until someone got it right. You would be surprised at how many songs you can guess correctly with only one note!

All,

Bob - I thought so. I love stuff like that. Sometimes though it can get frustrating 'coz the answer will be right on the tip of your brain - but it just won't come to you. LOL!

Again Medusa - I am lame at this game. LOL! Although - I did have "Hurt So Good." I loved that song. I have that one on an oldies tape. And it has rung sooooooo true in one or two of my past relationships. You know this man ain't the right one becasue you are hurting sometimes - but it feels so good when you finally get up w/him. LOL! "I'm not complaining - 'cause it feels so good to me" "Don't you know that it hurts so gooooood" LOL! That Millie was something else.

All,

Why thank you for that Medusa. That was nice and I appreciate it - although you still 'da woman as it pertains to this game. You got game in this game girlfriend. You most def gots me beat. LOL!

I couldn't answer any of SS's either. And we know she is the Queen of knowing all things about the sixties' music. Let me see if I can come up w/some seventies stuff to stomp y'all. LOL!

1. "34-26-36" LOL! Or was it 36-24-36?
2. "When will they ever learn"
3. "Got to get to your good loving"
4. "Just because of you"
5. "You're the only one that I adore"
6. "Not much longer will you be mine"
7. "Long time passing"
8. "Don't you know you're my everything"
9. "Let me tell you about a place I know"

Btw - I see - I am going to have to look up some Lyrics round here so they can be harder to get. Is that cheating? LOL!

I might holler back after the infamous debates.

Hey De-struc-tion. "You fine thing you" Name that tune w/that line in it. LOL!

And Robb - thanks for elaborating on your career. I found it interesting and amazing you engineer you. Big ups to you for giving back and helping others as you perform your job.

GoGoGirl's last list:
#2 and #7 "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"-Weavers, Pete Seeger, Freddy Scott (my favourite)-I suspect that only one was in your mind in THAT particular song (or maybe even neither?), but both lines ARE in that song.

#9 "Twistin' The Night Away"-Sam Cooke

MAN!!! #3-4-5-6 & 8 are ALL familiar and ringing in my ears, yet I can't pinpoint them!

GoGoGirl: I tempered that bland engineering work by being in the music industry (soul labels)(part time)from 1975-83. And, from 1984-present, I've been writing and drawing Donald Duck & Uncle Scrooge for Dutch and Danish Disney comic books, writing a children's book series, and working on animated films.

GoGoGirl: "Just Because of You" is from " A Brand New Me" by Jerry Butler, also by Dusty Springfield.

"You're The Only One I Adore" is from a song I play a lot! Why can't I hear other parts of the song, and think of the title?

Strung Out Over You is from Goin In Circles by The Friends Of Distinction.

Soul Sister: #1,9,11,12-I can hear those lyrics even sung in the voices of the groups, yet I can't seem to hear the rest of the songs, and figure out what songs they are!!! This is really frustrating!

Mine were all chart records from 1963-66 (except #13 (which was played in L.A. on KGFJ and S.F. on KDIA, and , I think I remember it a little bit on WVON in Chicago).

But, I'm really surprised no one is getting any of them except The Chris Bartley.

That's correct "Oldies"! Most of the others charted in many cities, and many were local big hits. Only #13 might be tough. But even that one was played at least a bit on many soul stations around the country.

Soul Sister: Your #1 "No more lonely bowling alleys" was He'll Be Back" by The Players-How could I take so long to get a Chicago record (that was a HIT)?????? Your #12 "That's the same thing you told me" is "Funny" by Joe Hinton. Great song! "Me" was quite a high note, as I remember.

#4. you shake me up when I'm around you

#9. you don't care where I go or what I do

#10. when that moment of truth suddenly arrives

#11. under stars twinkling high above

#12. a love to keep me warm when it's cold

#13. but I'm trying so hard to find the right words to say

#14. now don't that remind you of us when we were young

#15 "Like The Hully Gully But Not So Slow" is from "C'mon and Swim" by Bobby Freeman.

#13 "But I'm tryin' so ha-a-ard to find the right words to say"-from "(It's A)Groovy Situation' by Gene Chandler

There's no excuse for me not getting #1,4,6,7,8,9,12 and 16. Especially #7. That's one of my favourite all-time records!!!! A Chicago record, no less!!!

GoGoGirl: Your latest #10 "You don't have to stay forever" is from "You Don't Have To Say You Love" - by Dusty Springfield.

Well, I'm partly from Chicago. I lived there from 1959-1966. But from 1947-1958, while living in Winnipeg, and/or The Netherlands, my family used to visit our family in Chicago. Neither Winnipeg, nor The Netherlands had any R&B music to listen to. So my hanging out at my uncle's store in The South Side, and summer living in South Chicago, was my introduction to R&B, and blues music (although my father had a lot of jazz and some blues records in Canada (he bought a lot of them when we were in Chicago). I returned to Chicago for a couple months in 1967 and 1968, so I was a "Chicagoan" from 1947-1968. I live 1/2 year in Den Haag (The Hague), Netherlands (1972-present),and 1/2 in L.A. (1966-1973,1978-83,1995-presen t).

"Oldies" #7 may not be from Chicago, but I KNOW it's one of my favourite records. Yet I still can't pinpoint it.

Soul Sister: That's the SECOND time I missed Cool Jerk!!! How is that possible???? AND "Baby, Baby, Please!!! Timothy Wilson is one of my favourite singers!!! How could I miss "I Who Have Nothing"???? AND "PLAYBOY"!!!???? and "Sad Girl!!! Bah! Humbug!!! I better go take some Ginkobaloba!!!

I just FINALLY figured out that your latest #1 is "Together" by The Intruders, and then, when going back to re-read other lines I see that "Oldies" got it a lot earlier!

Juice - You got these three right - #7 The Loco-motion by Little Eva, #13 Groovy Situation by Gene Chandler and #14 5-10-15-20 (25-30 of Love) by the Presidents.

Here's a hint - on #6 those words are spoken, not sung.

Hey Robb! I looked at your 20 again and I don't have a clue, no melody, male or female, fast or slow, next words don't come to mind. I know I'll be kicking myself when I see the answers.

Ten of my 16 are still unidentified. Of those, only 2 are 70's songs. The other 8 are all 60's. Two of those 60's songs didn't chart but one is a Chicago song and one is Motown so someone here should be able to come up with them. In fact I've seen both of these songs mentioned on "favorites" lists.

I think I will post the answers on Sunday night or Monday morning. That'll give everyone some time to figure them out over the weekend. Maybe I'll post some clues on Saturday.

So gulp down some more Ginkgobiloba, fire up those brain cells, go Robb! (and everyone else too.)

Hi Soul Sister! Doesn't that just drive you mad! These things fly through my head all day over and over and over. That song reached #4 on the pop chart and #1 on the R&B chart. Remember, those words are spoken, not sung. You'll get it soon!

Hi Destruction! Right, right and right. They are

#1. you have to watch what you're puttin' down -
Nutbush City Limits - Ike & Tina Turner

#6. and even though you've made a fool of me so many times before - Cry Baby - Garnet Mimms

#12. a love to keep me warm when it's cold - I Want A Love I Can See - Temptations

Only 7 more to go!

Since Nutbush City Limits is now playing through my head constantly, here's a question for all of you. Is that unusual musical sound in that song produced by one of those instruments I saw discussed on one of the other threads? What is it? Thanks!

All,

Destruction. Well I never..............

How dare you! LOL! You are too much. I can see someone round 'chere missed the kid. Admit it man - you missed me. Who else would you have to pick at if not for me? LOL! I do declare!

Anyway - I'll give my answers after I finish up this dinner. It is unusual for me to be cooking on a Friday. Usually - we call in a pizza or sumsen. But I didn't have to step out the house today for the first time this week. LOL!

And why in the world would you choose a name like - Destruction anyway? What does that signify - do tell? What's up with that moniker? LOL!

Hi Soul Sister! You're right it's Cry Baby by Garnet Mimms. Destruction beat you to it though by a few hours. I LOOOOOVE that song. It was out in August of 1963, which is why I can't understand some people saying "soul music" didn't come about till 1965. Lots of good examples of the Birth Of Soul CDs.

I'm not surprised I missed Oldies' #6 even though I love Garnett Mimms and The Enchanters. I hate TALKING in songs-and NEVER listen to the words. However (HINT: Two songs on my list of 20 are done by Garnett Mimms).

Right, Morgan-#8 is "I Wish You Love" by Gloria
Lynne

Of the 16 left of my 20 that haven't been answered are chart records by The O'Jays,Drifters, Betty Everett, Billy Butler, Garnett Mimms & Enchanters, Jan Bradley, Mary Wells, The Rivingtons, Billy Stewart, Superbs, so I expect people should be able to get most of them.

Here are #21-30:

21. "If I listen quietly, I can hear my poor heart tellin' me-e-e-e"

22. "This man'll walk up to ya, and look ya in the eye, put his hand on your shoulder, and tell you a big fat lie"

23. "Sometimes I want to stay here, -then again, I want to leave"

24. "Every girl, when she's young and free, gets so hung up on a new boy she meets"

25. "You're so wrapped up in your school books, that you won't give me a look"

26. "I can't keep still when bongos play, and most everybody feels that way"

27. "In the summer, the birds they play, winter comes and they fly away, April fades from the month of May, Mother Nature, she planned it that way"

28. "I walked into a club, jumped up and grabbed a microphone, I asked the man leading the band to let me sing my song"

29. "And every time the wild wind touches my-y-y lips, mmm...I think of your kiss, and feel so blue"

30. "Watch out for that storm to come, Boy, 'cause the sun don't shine every day"
