One thing I like is TRIVIA, especially musical trivia. I have found that on this forum there are many folk who are blessed with musical information and tidbits that should be shared with the rest of us...the ones who are the wizards in our own little circles. LOL. I propose here a thread that will test the ablities of a few, people on the forum ask a trivia styled question and whoever feels like it answers. It a great musical education tool. Frankly, the harder the questions the better for the WIZARDS of the forum. Lets see what everyone thinks they know. Lets not make it 'gossipy', or too detailed oriented, mostly Questions and Answers. Come up with some goodies folks! Have fun! |

What's an Ondioline? Is it a woodwind? It sounds like some sort of steam whistle. Somebody told me that the track was recorded in New York, and that Neil Sedacka played that weird instrument. Can that be right? |

Robb, an Ondioline is a small wooden case keyboard instrument of just a couple of octaves. The sound is tube derived and the keyboard is suspended by some sort of rubber device that allows the player to wiggle it left and right to achieve the intense vibrato. Bobby, If Paulie was breathing down my neck I probably couldn't spell my name! Capice!!! |

I'm not sure Robb. That sounds like another good trivia question. The interesting part on this record was for years I thought it was recorded at United Sound and after the record hit, producers were booking time at United to use the studio organ that they mistakenly thought was the instrument on the record. It was through this forum that I was told " Runaway" was recordred at Bell Sound in New York. I still wasn't convinced but after calling Harry Balk, who produced the record, and asking him about it, it was confimed. Bell sound. |

Here's another: Which one of these famous Detroit producers and songwriters did NOT have his or her name credited on a Motown record?: Mike Hanks, Emanuel Laskey, Sonny Sanders, Tony Hestor, Thelma Coleman Gordy, J.J. Barnes, Tony Ewing, Don Davis, Don Juan Mancha, Bob Hamilton, Dave Hamilton, Harry Balk, Cornell Blakely, Barney "Duke" Browner, George Clinton, Ed Wingate. |

No Robb, a Pipe Organ is just that...A Pipe Organ. The sound of this instrument is obtained by air being driven through tuned metal pipes. The Ondioline's sound was, as I mentioned, derived from vacuum tubes, like the early electronic organs. |

Okay folks....I guess I'd better toss my hat into the ring... Name the exotic instrument the Beach Boys used on their hit "Good Vibrations". Jackie Wilson's hit "Higher & Higher" was originally written for another act. Who were they? Name the other Coca Cola jingle the late Roquel Billy Davis wrote that became a country hit for the late Dottie West. The late Edwin Starr wrote a Top 40 hit for a Detroit-based pop group in 1966. Name the group and the hit (Ralph knows the label owner very well....) Name three tunes that feature the guitar work of Dennis Coffey OUTSIDE of the Motown and Sussex labels. The Impressions hit "Choice Of Colors" was arranged by this music legend (clue - there's an extensive thread on the forum regarding this person). That's it for now... Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Nice questions, KevGo. Higher and Higher was supposed to be written for a Chess act, if I remember correctly. I think it was The Dells (but not positive). Edwin Starr (Charley Hatcher) wrote "Oh How Happy". Shades of Blue recorded it. The label owner was Harry Balk (right?). I would say Johnny Pate arranged "Choice Of Colors" I probably have 50 Detroit records with Dennis Coffey featured on guitar. Here are 3: "Save It (Never too Late"-Melvin Davis "I Can't Make It Anymore"-Spyder Turner "My Day Has Come"-Scott Brothers I can't figure out what the exotic Beach Boys' instrument is. Was it the "musical saw" that produced that "psychadelic" sound in the break? |

Ok Kev, The Beach Boys used the therimin. Higher & Higher was meant for The Dells. Mr Starr did indeed write Oh How Happy for Shades Of Blue. Donny Hathaway arranged Choice Of Colors. Billy Davis wrote It's The Real Thing & Things Go Better With Coke. I also could swear that there was a Coke jingle, Country Sunshine. Robb, Minnie Riperton recorded with both The Gems/Lovettes, The Starlets & The Rotary Connection. (Message edited by juicefree20 on October 03, 2004) |

I don't think Minnie was the lead singer of The Starlets or the only lead of The Lovettes. I can't speak for Rotary Connection. In any case, the group of which she was the lead singer AND which also recorded two very different songs over the same background track was The Gems. What were those two songs? What exactly is a theramin? |

Rob, A Theramin is a box like device with an antenna sticking up out of it. When something approaches the antenna ( a hand ) it emits a tone. The closer the hand gets to the antenna the tone gets higher in pitch. So with a little practice and good hand control one could play music with the device. It is named after it's inventor. I believe his first name was Robert but I could be wrong. Besides " Good Vibrations " the Theramin was used extensively in earlier Sci Fi movies. |

I hope y'all won't give up on the other trivia questions asked above. The Gems had two different releases on Chess, with the same BG track, but a very different song. That is quite different from a BG track being taken by someone over to another label, and having a new song with entirely new words used for a DIFFERENT artist, as happened with Dave Hamilton's "Challenge My Love" being used on Maurci for Monique; or as having a different song (words)with the same BG on the SAME ARTIST, but remaining UNRELEASED (Like Kim Weston's "Do Like I Do"/"I'll Never see My Love Again" and Philles' "Christmas Baby Please Come Home" and its "secular" version. I hope someone takes a stab at the question regarding which of the non-Motown producers/writers NEVER worked for Motown, as well as the Popcorn Wylie and Contours questions. Here's another: What alias or "pen name" did Harry Balk use during his Big Top days in the early '60s? |

I always used to remember them, as MacKenzie King was one of our most famous Canadian Prime ministers (leaving office just before I was born). For some reason, the words just bounced into my mind. Maybe one day when I become a drinker, I'll get tipsy enough to finally record it. I bet you that it would be a pretty popular song too. Now, if I could just figure out a way to juggle it, I'll make a little money. One of these days, I'll hook up the old Trinity & M1, add a touch of Cubase & continue my illustrious career. |

Destruction, I kinda feel like Otis on "Martin". All he ever wanted to do was finish his song. Kinda like Ralph Kramden playing the trumpet. All he wanted to do was hit that hit note, just once. Well, one day I'm gonna fire up the old M1 & Trinity & finish that song. I have a little of it on tape & if I ever finish it, it's gonna be hilarious. However, as I started it over five years ago, I'll have to change the music. Times done changed, maybe I can do it Nelly style & get Missy to hit 'em with the HEE HEE HEE. If I'm really lucky, maybe I can get Khia to help with the hook. You know that I have to find someone to sing the hook for me. ONE OF THESE GOOD OLD DAYS........ |

Hi again, Robb. I love that song but always hesitated to put it on a soul CD because it had such a Brill Building sound. It was one of a whole pile of 45s I picked up at a garage sale (of all places!)many years ago here near Detroit. With it were all kinds of great things like Detroit Emeralds, Billy Boy, Redwoods, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Barbara & the Uniques, Earl Paradise, Young Sisters, Johnny Stone, Eddie Bond & the Stompers, Volumes, Jimmy Reed, Sherry Starlyn, Bobby Powell, Little Carl Carlton, Egyptians, Fantastic Four, Timmy Shaw, Superlatives, Jackie Ross, Bobby Jameson (Del Shannon sound-alike, or is it him?!), Emanuel Lasky, Barrett Strong, Sharpees, Clyde Stacy and a Hank Ballard & The Midnighters 7" stereo 33 1/3 rpm of Let's Go Again with These Young Girls as the flip side (different song from the 45 flip). I struck a goldmine that day and felt really sorry for the poor guy who's mom had sold them off like that!! I think I paid a quarter each for them. Also a recorded interview with Marvin Gaye on a 45 which I will post some questions about later. Fan |

Still nobody trying another guess on the Detroit producer who never worked for Motown, -or the Detroit artist who never had a commercial release for Motown? Or the nicknames of the members of The Corsairs? Or the names of the two Gems songs on Chess released 45s, which used the same backing track? |
