My name is Richard Felstead, and I'm a white 41year old male, who resides in a place called Watford, just outside London. I am one SDF's fairly recent members, and I post as and when I can. I started playing music on pirate radio in the the late seventies when I was 16 years old, and am currently a presenter on arguably,one of the best and most respected soul music stations in the UK. My main job is working for London's biggest college. University College London in the control room, trying to keep an eye on and the students and staff. I'm Marshall Crenshaw. I played Buddy Holly in the film"La Bamba", and have done a gazillion other things in the music biz: written a handful of international hit songs, made a pile of records, etc., etc., sang with The Funk Bros. at the Apollo Theatre.. I've been New York based since 1978 but grew up in the Detroit area and have a deep reverence for Detroit and it's contribution to World Musical Culture. I miss the days of the Soulful Detroit Forum when people like Ed Wolfrum, Bob Ohlsson, and others were regular contributors. They have first-hand up-close stories to tell about the Detroit recording industry when it was in it's glory. That's what I'm most interested in finding here: an intelligent and thoughtful examination of Detroit music history. Over the last 2 years or so I've been turned off by the bulk of celebrity-gossip bullsh*t that has shown up here. Having said that, one of the things that keeps me coming back here is the continued input of the Great Bobby Eli. I'm still and always deeply in awe of "La La La Means I Love You" and so many other beautiful records that Bobby played on. So, Long Live SDF. | ||

To briefly recap my career, I was born & raised in Rochester NY (the home of Gene Cornish of the Rascals and jazzman Chuck Mangione, to name a few). Started my professional career in radio at WVOR-FM in Rochester and later moved to WHAM-AM (with a few stops at Ithaca College's radio stations for good measure!). Moved to NYC in 1990 and became a retail buyer/supervisor at HMV Record Stores (Broadway & West 72nd Street location for the curious!). In 1995 I was hired at Brunswick Records (the house that Jackie Wilson built!) as a sales/catalogue manager. Later moved on to the Tuff City Music Group in 1998 as a production coordinator. Wrote liner notes for Earth, Wind & Fire's Greatest Hits CD (released in 1998) and co-produced/coordinated several reissues on the Brunswick label. Hi, my participation here ebbs and flows with whatever else is going on in my life. I just moved back to my apartment so I'll probably be around more often while I try to clean up a little. Rent is pretty brutal in downtown Toronto and my big apartment shared with a room mate costs only slightly more than the locker I'd have needed to store all my crap while I was living mostly across town, plus it let me access the internet. I'm really not used to being single, and while I sort of look forward to a few projects I've put off for a really long time, I've been somewhere between out of sorts and off the rails lately. So I finally decided to poke around the clubhouse here and see where else on-line I can divert my attention rather than indulging in reviving the lifestyle I happily quit to live more like a normal person a number of years ago. I'm curious as to how other people successfully dealt with these issues. I host a weekly radio show, play lots of soul and funk as well as reggae, jazz, rock n roll, punk, rap, hillbilly stuff... it's a quick 2 hour slot so I vary the early format before heading to the worlds of funk, Latin, soul, continental African, all kinds of music. I almost always wrap up with reggae, almost never any dancehall, it's just too mean spirited too often for me to bother getting more into dancehall, besides, there's tons of roots that never gets played anywhere off-line. I discovered Soulfuldetroit almost immediately after its launch, as David Meikle used to submit soul music posts to Lowell's Detroit discussion board. What was I doing there? Looking for info on the city, I've visited a few times and find it one of the most physically intriguing cities I've visited. I've read a few books about the city but they don't show up often in used T.O. book joints. The last was 'Hell Night' by Ze'ev Chaffets (sp?) which a friend found at a yard sale. I'm Leo & Cancer, but haven't paid much attention to astrology for about 15 years, my first couple of girlfriends were really into it. I'm skeptical, but learned enough to identify with Cancer even though, to borrow from Deep Purple, 'Maybe I'm A Leo'. | ||

I'm Lynn Bruce--born in Detroit(Grace hospital).I was 16 when I joined my first band in 1958.We were called the Del-Royals.We had Bob Babbitt on bass and Danny James on guitar. We would play teen-clubs and back up local doo-wop groups. We had no idea that some would become legends. They were just like us,trying to make money so we would not have to work a day job. Two years later,I went on the road with Dave Kovarick, Jimmy Van and Jack Rainwater. We called ourselfs the Gigalos. After a few months we got an offer to come back to Detroit to play at Roses bar with Jamie Coe. This is how Jamie Coe and the Gigalos started. I was there for about 4 weeks when Harry Balk and Irving Mechanic came in to hear me play. They liked what they heard and said that Johnny and the Hurricanes drummer Bo Savich was leaveing the group and would I like to work with them playing drums. At that time in early 1960 they were one of the top rock groups in America and the world!! So Bo went with Jamie and I went with Johnny and the Hurricanes. When your 19 and get to go on the Dick Clark show, get to work with Bo Diddly,Fats Domino and Sam Cook on tour and just about everyone that had a hit in the early 60s,it was worth all those one nighters. In 1964 I got tired of the road and took a gig at a bar called Sullivans in Dearborn ,working with Rod(richards) Cox the future Guitar player of Rare Earth. This band in the spring of 1964 had singing groups come in on fri. and sat. We had Nolan Strong ,Bobby Martin and the Martiniques,the Royal Jokers,Danny Woods,and Barbra Adams and others. One night we had a girl group called the Supremes try out for the weekend gig but the owner said they didn't do enough choreogrphy to please the crowd.It wasn't but a few weeks later in the summer of 64 that their big hit took off. The owner wanted to hang him self for being so stupid.We would have helped him as we told him they had great harmony and to hire them. In 1966 I teamed up with Bob Babbitt in a group called the 20th Centuries. One day Babbitt called me up and said would I like to work with him backing up Chuck Berry.Man,I would have worked for free to work with him in those days.It's a good thing Chuck didn't know that as he watched his money closly.He would demand his money up front in cash or he wouldn't play!!! From about 1977 till about 5 years ago I worked with a local Detroit group called the Blue-Notes. I agree with Marshall Crenshaw and miss the days when more of the local Detroit musicians would post on this forum and trade stories of the road plus technical info about recording. Lynn Bruce | ||

Isaiah,It's nice to see you back my friend.The truth is,I do the same thing when I see your name posting something. You always have something interesting to say. Ralph,I've posted so many of my stories about working with some of the greats and not so great stars when I first found this site a couple of years ago that I kind of burnt out. The above post introducing myself is a rerun of my first opening post two years ago. When I see the accomplishments of people like Bobby Eli,yourself,Dennis Coffey,Bob Babbitt,I'm humbled. All I did was back up a lot of stars,I was just a Detroit bar drummer that was lucky enough to play with some of the big stars.Kind of like a Forest Gump musician. I could start a rerun thread and recycle the stories for the new guys on the forum but It would be boring to the regulars.LOL I'm sure that you and myself could tell more stories about life as a musician on the road but then we'd have to get into someethings that are illegal and others that might be X-rated.LOL Some of those old mafioso owned clubs are a story all by themselves. | ||

Like Al Capone, I never have my picture taken. I feel that my soul will be captured and stolen away. I'm almost 60 years old, and traveled all over the World, yet I've never owned a camera. I've only taken about 8 pictures in my life (when Japanese tourists hand me their camera and ask me to take a picture of them. I've only had about 5 pictures of myself taken for passport and ID photos, over the past 30 years. But, I'll try to get one of my friends to take a picture of me that I can scan and put onto this thread. I'll have to ask again how to post the picture onto the forum. We had the instructions in a thread, but I wouldn't even remember how to look it up in the archives (don't remember name of thread). Anyway, it might be several weeks till I can get the picture taken. But, I hope everybody can post a picture. It'll be nice to see what we all look like. | ||

A big WHAZZUP from Cleveland!!! Here's the skinny on me: I'm 40 years old, work as a clerical helper for the local branch of the UFCW (the union that represents most of the grocery chains and drug stores), and have been collecting records since I was a whopping THREE YEARS OLD (at that time, I had several stacks of hand-me-down 45s dumped onto me: from my older brother and sister, from my cousins, and from my brother's friend down the street)! I was exposed to psychedelic rock from my older brother, the Beatles and Motown from my sister, and polka and country music from my Mom. Add to that the Top 40 stuff that I was listening to, and you have my musical background...well, sorta. I now have over 6,000 45s, over 2,000 LPs, and lotsa CDs (have cassettes, but I don't bother counting those). I'm largely into older soul and rock (stumbled blindly into Northern soul about 15 years ago, largely self-taught but I rely on the expertise and kindness of veteran collectors to fill me in whenever there's a question), but I do listen to many other styles of music as well. Not really into much newer rock, prefer country in terms of new music. That's all I have to say right now...except this...where the HELL are my fellow Clevelanders, RD and Walt?? Robb, Your pic is only 17K, if it started larger, than maybe you shrank it too much. Sometimes you can keep a pic at its original size by reducing the number of colors used to create it. Hi everybody, my name is John and I live in Englewood, Colorado. (A suburb of Denver) I have been coming to the forum for about a year or so. I found out about it from "Bassland". (Bob Lee's website) I don't post that often although I visit the fourm almost every day. I was born in Shreveport, Louisana but grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. I began a music career as a drummer in the mid 60's and played with various local bands for about 12 years. I had a great time and met lots of great people. I really enjoy "our" kind of music and miss the classic Soul and R&B of the 50's, 60's and 70's. As we all know the music of today just doesn't compare. I really enjoy reading all the posts about music as that has been my passion for years. I am a bass player now, but the music scene here in Denver and the surrounding communities is woefully devoid of Soul and R&B. Hi Moe! Whasup! That is "I" with the yellow suit on. Fast foward to 2004 and I'm a chubbette due to a torn menicus that keeps me from doing high impact and walking which kept my weight down. I just started some low impact on Monday to test the knee out as I just had my 3rd arthoscopic surgery on it on July 29. So, I'll try again tonight. I'll give myself a year to lose the extra tonnage. Also, I had to cut all my hair off in 2002 after attempting to grow locs. I love locs but I didn't realize the high maintenance incurred if you want them to look nice so I had to cut all my hair off as it was locking and once it locks that's permanent. Soul Sister: When my husband first saw me at my job's Christmas Party, he thought I was easy and was gonna hit and run. Ha! Boyfriend met his match (thanks to my dad who clued my sister's and I in). That innocent look you refer to had it's disadvantages. You know the syndrome from the 50s & 60s that if you were lightskinned with so-called "good" hair some people had the impression that you were a punk. Not! Gurl, I could tell you about one or two bar fights I had with women but they're too ugly. I'm a lot of fun and a little mischevious; a frustrated comic who should have followed her dream but no use crying over spilt milk. Now I do my comedy as a hobby with a gig coming up on October 2. It's a high school reunion and they want me to do my back-in-the day skit. It depicts a house party and in walks a boy I like. It includes me dancing the dances of the day and it goes over extremely well when I perform it. (As I type, I'm trying to get my girlfriend's daughter to sew me up a "Ben Casey" blouse.
