If you could have just one more last chance to experience a performance of your favorite musician/vocalist/songwriters)etc... Who would it be, and what would you want to hear? I would just love to hear Anything by Walter Jackson, Barry White sing 'Just The Way You Are', Paul Williams do 'For Once In My Life' and Curtis Mayfield do 'Keep On Pushing', Darryl Banks doing 'Open The Door To Your Heart', Dinah Washington do 'September', Dusty Springield do 'Something In You Eyes', Selena do 'I Could Fall In Love', and Jackie Wilson do 'The Sweetest Feeling'(Yhere are so many wh left us so unexpectantly....just for starters...I know some of you have thought about that at one time or another. That is a great question. I would have to say Sam Cooke. I would like to see him sing gospel songs, and Teenage Sonota and Tennessee Walz. (Message edited by sis on September 14, 2004) |

Ditto SisDetroit for Sam Cooke!! I also would have loved to see him singing "Only Sixteen". I would also add: Curtis Mayfield & the Impressions doing songs like "Minstrel & Queen, Grow Closer Together, and I'm The One Who Loves You". I got their anthology a few years back, I listen to it almost everyday. |

My thinking is right in line with you, Sis and Morgan. I would love to hear Sam Cooke do a few gospel numbers from his Soul Stirrers period, like "Touch the Hem of His Garment". I also listen to my Curtis & the Impressions anthology all the time and love the cuts you mentioned, Morgan. So, to come up with something different, I'll wish for John Lennon doing an unplugged-type performance of "I'm Only Sleeping", "It's Only Love", "Strawberry Fields Forever" or anything else he cut with the Beatles. |

Soul Sister, I came across a blindfold test that Billie Holiday did in an old jazz magazine and a record by Ruth Brown was played and BH exploded! She said that RB was a ripoff of Miss Cornshucks and she couldn't "stand her" can't stand to hear her sing, ordered the guy doing the blindfold test to take the record off!! She said other things that I can't remember, seeing you post Miss Cornshucks sort of jarred my memory. The whole blindfold test was hilarious!! She was so blunt!! Somewhere in the review BH stated that she felt like Peggy Lee was stealing her style of singing (note for note according to BH) and it pissed her off!!! She admitted that sure, she borrowed some of Pops (Louis Armstrong) phrasing but, she had her own style when it came to singing. |

Morgan; That's pretty funny!! Thanks for relaying the story. RB also got her first big hit on a song Jimmy was known for back in the day "So Long". Also LaVerne Baker tried to imitate Little Miss Cornshucks by copying her act under the name of Little Miss Sharecropper but that didn't last for long!!LOL!! Billie was correct there was only one 'Cornshucks'! RB also imitated Billie at a club where Billie was at, there sat Billie in her furs carrying her little poodle and Billie chewed her out, told her to be herself & don't try to imitate her!! LOL!! Something similar happened with Dinah & Billie when Dinah first made the scene. S.S. |

Here's my list.... Seeing Jackie Wilson record "Lonely Teardrops" at United Sound Studios in 1958. Witnessing Walter Jackson tearing up "An Uphill Climb To The Bottom" both in the studio and at the Apollo Theatre. The Chi-lites perfoming "Oh Girl" for the first time on the Flip Wilson Sbow. Sitting down with the late Roquel Billy Davis and discussing his long & fruitful career (miss you, my friend)... Watching the Dells rip up "There Is" at the Chess Studios. Seeing Earth Wind and Fire rip it up live at the Rochester War Memorial. Watching every recording session by all the Sport Records artists (the Dramatics, Andre Williams) at United Sound - you folks have got to hear these tapes!!! Kevin Goins - KevGo |
