David Meikle has kindly agreed to appear on Reflections on Northern Soul and discuss the music of Detroit, Soulful Detroit, the old Glasgow soul scene, and play some records as well. You can tune in this Saturday 12th October from 14:00 to 16:00 hours (GMT)which I think is 10:00 in Chicago(CST). the URL is www.radiomagnetic.com

We are also live on air in Glasgow only at 106.6FM

If you wish a mention, or a dedicaton or if you wish me to ask David a question live on air e mail us on Saturday at studio@radiomagnetic.com

As it will be two Glaswegians talking to each other about their love of soul music I shall arrange the appearance of a simulaneous translation of our glotal stop dialect at the same website:)

Thanks Carl I think we need to confirm that Chicago is 4 hours behind UK.

Can someone in Detroit confirm that the clock on this forum is running in time with THEIR clock!

This would make Detroit 5 hours behind UK. ie they would tune in at 9am Saturday.

Hi Mel

Somewhere on the site I mention Glasgow's love affair with dance through all eras.

I was frequenting it in the very late sixties when it was disco based.

It was quite a place, full of characters and headcases!

As for all-nighters in Glasgow...no, never been one ever. Something to do with our lack of respect for the drink, I think.

Plus Soul music is only really hitting the city again after a gap of 30 odd years.

David,on the programme I saw it mentioned a few Bam Pots. The city of Glasgow has a lotin common with Liverpool,Head cases and the drink. Was there not a club called The Dungeon or The Cellar in the 60s that catered for our music or have I got the wrong city.Cheers,MEL.

The only place that played soul exclusively was where I worked in 69 - La Caverna.

Glasgow was like London everybody moved with the latest fad.......except me and a dozen others.

BigGray hope you enjoy it. I know I'll be nervous but if I stay cool I think it will be a good show.

Hope more will listen in.

The Barrowland ballroon was rebuilt and re opened in the early sixties. Like many other major ballrooms of its type it was busy, and violent. It was frequented by American servicemen and local hardmen who were kept in line by a team of heavy duty stewards and The Shore patrol. Music was mostly live with two resident bands and visiting groups. The place closed circa 1970 when a serial killer nick named Bible John murdered three women whom he had picked up at the barrowland. It was and still is in a rough spot in town. Dancers deserted it. I think a couple of the victims were married and the heavy police investgation meant its married patrons were not likely to return.

The ballroom was turned into a rollerena and with the demise of Glasgow's Apollo it then became a very atmospheric live venue. I saw Kraftwerk there and The Barrowland added another dimension to their performance.

I have spoken to some mod revivalists who told me they used to hold club nights in the downstairs bar. The same mod revivalists booked the big ballroom for a scooter rally party with Tommy Hunt heading the bill. The next gig they booked Edwin Starr and a full live band who were brilliant. The Barrowland I think has the last sprung dance floor in Glasgow but even if it didn't have springs Edwin's performance would have had you walking on air. As it was My wife and I danced at the back of the hall on a spot of the floor which didn't have beer on it. There is nothing like dancing a good live band.
The Carnabay Street guys booked the place again but there are very few live acts like Edwin Starr who can pull in over a 1000 people and their Jimmy James gig was cancelled due to poor ticket sales. I had seen Jimmy James and the Vagabonds who were regular vistors to Scotland in the sixties. They played The Ferry which has a capacity of 400 a few years ago and they were pretty good although with a cabaret tinge.

I'm glad you heard it (and enjoyed it) Sis.

Only got mixed up a couple of times.

As the records were playing I was reminded of how vast this story is. Also of the quality of the music put together by these amazing people.

Detroiters take a bow.

Now I can get back to the Golden World story!

Sorry I didn't have your request with me.

I may be asked back apparently so we'll be more organised then.

And that song by the Temptations with David in lead, what was the name of that song? I know I must have it somewhere.

A few days ago, when listening to the Metros with two of the remaining group, they got so excited they have decided to try and sing again. When searching for info on them, I found that there is a new Metros, who released an LP a few years again but have since disbanded. So, I told Percy to go for it.

Hi David,

Thought the show went very well - excellent
selection of tracks.

That Terry Felton record must be from Memphis
- the brass section sound like they could have come from nowhere else

That "Barbara Mercer" record - I'd bet it's actually Ruby Andrews for a coupla reasons

1. I'm sure there's another version of that song
- the Creations on Zodiac (?)(maybe it's the
Brothers of Soul themselves.

2. Ruby worked with Bridges, Knight and Eaton
on most of her Zodiac sides - probably Ric
Williams decided to use the backing track again
but with Ruby's voice for use as an album track
or whatever.

3. As far as I know Barbara didn't work with BKE

It was a strange and wonderful feeling knowing that Forum members were listening eight thousand
miles away.

Rasputin - I think "The Mad Monk" is so cute. That is really sharp. Hey, I'm in Detroit also, and I can't discuss the music the way they do, but remember, we were a part of the music because we were the fans who enjoyed and purchased the music. So, without us fans, the soul brothers and sisters would not be happy. So, we make up the final chorus. :o)

Let's hope that David's appearance will be on one of the archive programmes that can be heard at:

http://www.radiomagnetic.com/archive/rnb.htm

in future. For those of us unable to listen in, we can maybe anticipate it in the next few days? FrankM, I hope I am not out of order mentioning this! I have just listened to The Casualeers/Dance Dance Dance on one of your previous programmes and no matter what time of the day it is I just want to get up and dance to it. Those backing vocals send chills up and down my backbone and no pitch correction either. Great great music - it lives and breathes.

Mel - Listen to the drums exactly 2' 30" in when the drummer goes into thirds rather than quarters and it makes the heart have a lazy beat trying to catch it up again. I do not know what they call that in musical terms but it is surley clever arranging/drumming without a doubt. At 2' 18" the drummer gallops the snares and changes the groove yet again. Superb brass arranging and a great bass teasing from the higher registry down to the lower notes. The change of key, the musical sax break what more can you expect? I think this record should be played at every dance gig to show writers/producers/dancers what music should sound like. Do you remember the Liquid Smoke version? I do not have the Roulette 45rpm either. I have it on the Talcom Soul CD from Stateside.
