David and Lowell,
It appears to me that the Golden World Webisode is going to be a WINNER. Looking forward to episode 2. You guys did it again. My sincerest congratulations.

Ralph

It's a pleasure to receive such a compliment from one who was there.

BTW I'm wondering if anyone else was surprised at JoAnne's revelation that Berry asked Ed for a partnership?

I think "gobsmacked" is the popular expression... I sure was! A brilliant piece of work so for (love the graphics), and can't wait to read the next instalment. Of course, this is a story that people have been waiting at least three decades to read! How does it feel to have the scoop?

David:
Oh my God...brilliant job...and this is webisode #1.
Am I surprised that Berry asked Wingate to partner up with him? No. If I may refer to Raynoma Singleton's "Berry, Me & Motown," Gordy worried night & day as to how he was going to keep the company rolling financially.
Enter Barney Ales, among others....
The Golden World story is also a testimony to Joanne Bratton, who was able to help run an empire that rivalled Gordy's in the face of such a terrible loss.
Kudos to all involved with this story and if you speak to Joanne Bratton, please send my regards.
Peace,
KevGo

Thanks Ritchie and Kev.

It was a pleasure to be able to talk to JoAnne, with Ed sitting in the background and it was clear from our discussion that JoAnne was a powerful personality; who was probably well to the front in the operation and development of Golden World.

The lady was also sooooo helpful and very easy to talk to.

50 plus pages on this story and I still want more!!

The beauty of the web however is that we can build on this as we go along.

I welcome, as usual, any additional detail and corrections.

Some really interesting pics to come too.

Well done David. Nice intro and excellent detail. Never thought I would have been reading anything about this on the 'Internet' when I bought my first Golden World record in 1974. There is enough material for a movie AND enough history/biography/music TV channels to buy it, around the world. It certainly is a golden world!

Do you have any pix of Joanne or Wingate?

Kev

I don't have pics of either person.

I've seen one of Ed Wingate but I think he was averse to having his photo taken.

Ralph says that Joanne was beautiful therefore you would like to think there would be some of her.

It's amazing how many entrepreneurs/music people from sixties Detroit have yet to be identified with a photograph.

Hey David,What a truly amazing Label Golden World was.One of my earliest recollections was of Little Carl Carlton on a white demo of Nothing No Sweeter and apart from the obvious stuff,One of the earliest obscure instrumentals that was a Wheel spin, the superb Making up Time by as you know,The Holidays. And to this day still, has always eluded me on the english Polydor Label.(one of these days,may-be-ba-bee).Must also add about your sterling work on the label David, nice one.MEL.

Thanks Mel

Yes,it is astonishing what came out on the various labels.

I would also like to applaud those in England who had the foresight to issue some of these 45's around the time of their stateside release.

Does anyone know who was responsible for Polydor R&B for example?

Hello Dave,

I am learning things about GW that I was never aware of, and I worked there for 2 years! What a rich pre-studio history.

Congradulations on another winner. I am looking for more.
