Not that I wish to be controversial, but a friend of mine insisted I check out the above for information about a style of music and dance that has been popular in Carolina and particularly Myrtle Beach for many years. It is of interest to me for a number of reasons, but I found the following in my search and thought it may be an interesting topic to discuss, as I feel it is similar to the Northern Soul phenomenon! Maybe our American friends are keeping this a secret from us over here.

This link takes you to the Chairman of the Board website. My colleagues saw them perform at Myrtle Beach and they sing 'shag' and 'beach music (click the history button):

The track that plays whilst you browse is excellent!

I was fascinated!

Incidentally, the Chairmen's latest album has just been released here on Expansion. (I was only listening to it yesterday) Nice to hear the General is still in good voice, though Danny doesn't appear to have any lead vocals on their new CD.

There are similarities carl as both are dance scenes but the beach music fans don't have our hang ups about genre splittng and pigeon holing sounds. Live bands are big feature and lots of modern records (ie this year's releases)on the DJs' playlists. They are not averse to using the pitch control to alter the tempo of records and they use CD's. Even more horrific to Northern fans : they Dance with each other:) what kind of perverts are they?

Plus the fact that our Northern beaches are a little chilly at night?

Hollywood released a movie called "Shag" years ago. It dealt with the usual love/romance hollywood stuff but it took place in the Carolina's in the hey day of Beach Music. Folks down in the Coarolina's and Virginia Beach do a dance called the Shag. "60 Minute Man" being a big tune on that scene. Today, folks like the Tam's and Delbert McClinton have hits on the Beach music scene. Shuffles (at the right speed) and soul tunes. An interesting phenomena.

It seems new generations get hooked and continue the phenomenon. I am still researching the internet and am amazed by certain records that crop up. It seems Danny Woods appeared with 'Chairman' when my friends visited a venue over there. I am intrigued. We have relations in Greensboro. I feel a visit coming on.
