If you love hearing what happened in the studio, take a look at this and you'll see what all gets in between the romance of musicmaking and living in the real world.

And in its way, it totally explains the difference between "keeping your job" and "doing your job," which was a recent point of confusion on the board.

The problems with the drummer remind me of a story I heard once: A producer goes into the studio and instead of a regular drummer he uses a guy with a drum machine. But the guy has problems programming it and can't seem to get the sound the producer wants. Finally the producer loses it and says "Dammit, if I'd wanted mistakes I would have hired a REAL drummer!"

(with apologies to the many fine drummers I have played with, not to mention Benny, Pistol, Uriel et al)

Can't remember if I've related this story before but here goes.... (as told by the Musical Director of the studio I worked in, back in the early seventies.)

The night before, he and a stand-in drummer were deputising for the regular guys in a dance band. One number that was a band favourite was the Bert Kaempfert tune "A Walk In The Black Forest". The "dep" drummer managed somehow to totally foul it up. After they struggled through to the final bar, and the singer was chatting to the crowd, the band leader marched up to the drummer, and in a stage-whisper that the whole band heard, he advised: "next time you play that song, try not to crash into every ****ing tree!"
