IVY JO HUNTER - song listing PT. 1

Discuss Detroit: SoulfulDetroit Temporary: IVY JO HUNTER - song listing PT. 1
Top of pageBottom of page   By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.26 - 193.122.21.26) on Friday, October 04, 2002 - 09:23 am:

This is a preliminary listing of all the songs
I know of that were written or co-written by
Ivy Jo Hunter. The first artist listed under a title is, as far as I know, the original version.
I've listed other versions of songs which I think
are of interest to SD readers but as this is the
first draft of this listing I've left out many
non-soul versions of, in particular, "Dancing In The Street" as most of them are only intersting in that Ivy Jo gets publishing royalties from them.

The fuller listing which will include co-writers,
chart positions, catalogue numbers etc. is still in its early stages.
The aim of posting this now is just to remind people of just how many great records Ivy Jo
worked on.

If anybody can tell me the artists for songs
where I've listed the artist as "Unknown" it
would be much appreciated.

Marvin Gaye's performance of 'Just A Little Love (Before My Life Is Gone') was also included on the "Lost & Found: Love Starved Heart" expanded edition. In the cd booklet, Harry Weinger states that Chuck Jackson's version was released (on "Teardrops Keep Fallin On My Heart"), but neither a version by Billy Eckstine nor one by Dorsey Burnette was released.

This has been a bit of a rush job, I hadn't intended posting this yet as it still needs work done on it but I decided to go ahead because
1. David asked for it
2. I thought t would be nice to honour one of
Motown's legends on the first anniversary
of the launch of this wonderful web site.

While typing out the listing what struck me most
was that with a few exceptions this stunning body
of work was mainly created in such a short space
of time from the summer of '64 to late 1970.

CAn anybody think of any eighties or nineties
artist who has created a comparable body of work
in a similar time period - i can't think of
one either.

Sixties Detroit - a mine so deep we'll be digging
it forever !

"Teahouse in Chinatown"--also recorded by Jimmy Hart on Mercury. It is a Northern classic.

Also, "Don't Turn Away", another song from the Tops' first album, became a Northern fave thanks to the version by Chicagoan Tony Diamond on Blue Rock. I prefer this version to the Tops' version.

Diamond's real name was David Scott. He had previously served as a member of the Five Du-Tones (of "Shake a Tail Feather" fame) and later sang with the Chi-Lites.

Best,

Mark

What was your source for the listing...I can think of some missing titles and that even excludes the ones he really wrote but didn't get composer credit!!!

As an example...Ivy Jo wrote The Loving Country for the DMF Supremes first appearance at the Copa but it was first issued on the JMC Supremes ("Right On" album last track on side 2)

I heard this wonderful rumour that Ivy Jo might be working with Clay McMurray.....that's why I am so looking forward to Clay's new albums....it will such a change for me to buy an album of music from 2002!!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Davie Gordon (193.122.21.26 - 193.122.21.26) on Saturday, October 05, 2002 - 08:46 am:

Guys,

Thanks for your input - keep the additions / corrections coming.

How did I compile the listing ?

1. I took a note of all the songs registered
under Ivy Jo's name in the BMI database
2. Checked the ASCAP database to see if they had any other titles listed
3. Checked my copy of Keith Hughes' "Don't Forget
the Motor City" listing which was invaluable in
identifying unissued tracks
4. Checked my own database under the names of acts I knew he worked with to see if I could
find additions
5. Did another check of my database indexing the
database by song title to see if I could find
cover versions
6. Relied on my memory
7. Over to you lot to add your input.

As I said it was a bit of a rush job, I just hope
I haven't missed anytrhing glaringly obvious.

There are a few songs I definitely know I missed
after checking my hand-written notes - the list's
not perfect but given the time factor involved
I'm pretty pleased with it.

I just hope it has the same effect on you reading
it that it had on me typing it out - snatches of the choruses would bubble through my head and
I'd go "Must listen to that again !"
If it works that way for you I've done a good job.

John, that's great news about the possiblity of Ivy Jo working with Clay McMurray - that will be
well worth waiting for it it comes to fruition

One thing that I find intriguing is that there are
around half a dozen early songs published by
Correct-Tone none of which I've been able to
trace as being released. It looks as if Ivy Jo
worked there for a time before being brought
into Motown by Mickey Stevenson.

I also wonder just how many songs Ivy had to
share writer credits to get them recorded in the
first place.

I remember when (dedicated to Ivy Jo) ....

IVY BEING FORCED TO SHARE WRITER CREDITS IS NO JOKE, BUT AS WE ALL KNOW IS COMMONPLACE IN THE INDUSTRY. A COUPLE OF OBSCURE IVY TRACKS (I DONT EVEN KNOW IF THEY WERE EVER MASTERED FOR RELEASE), AND I'VE MISPLACED MY DEMO TAPES OVER THE YEARS, ARE "WINNING HAND", AND ONE OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITES..."WEST VIRGINIA SYMPHONY"...A SORT OF RAY CHARLES MEETS SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE FLAVOR..."WRIT BY IVY FOR GUITAR AND PIANO".

It's not uncommon for a writer to share royalties with a producer or artist in exchange for getting their song recorded however it's ALSO not uncommon for a writer to make being the producer along with a five-figure advance a condition of using a song on top of the writers' and publishers' shares. A writer's negotiating position always depends on how important the song potentially is to the artist.

Fred,

Ivy Jo's "I Remember When" has only ever been available as a single (VIP25055, 4/70)

His singles sometimes turn up on e-bay but
they go for quite high prices.

Hopefully they'll be released on CD one of these
days - personally I'd love to see the lost
"Ivy Jo Is In This BAg" album turn up on CD.

As for where to find Ivy Jo songs if you mean
songs recorded by other than himself look over
the listing - I've tried to give the names of
the albums that contain that particular song.
It's not complete yet but it should help you
find the tracks.

Keith,

Thanks for your input - keep 'em coming !

SOULBOY... YEAH, "SORRY IS A SORRY WORD" IS THE SAME AS THE TEMPTATIONS VERSION WITH DAVID RUFFUN ON LEAD. IVY USED TO CUT VOCALS ON A LOT OF TUNES WHICH LATER BECAME HITS FOR OTHER ARTISTS. ALASKAN PIPELINE IS ANOTHER ONE WHICH IVY RECORDED BUT GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE PIPS HAD THE MORE FAMILIAR VERSION, AND IVY'S RENDITION IS PERFORMED IN AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT MOOD, TEMPO, AND FEEL.
