DURING THE MID THROUGH LATE SIXTIES, EVERY HIGH SCHOOL IN DETROIT...AND PERHAPS ELSEWHERE...HAD ONE OR MORE VOCAL GROUPS WHOSE REPATORE CONSISTED MAINLY OF TEMPTATIONS SONGS, COMPLETE WITH CHOLLY ATKINS ROUTINES. MY FAVORITE, PRIMARILY BECAUSE I WAS THEIR MUSICAL DIRECTOR, AND THEY WERE DAMN GOOD WERE THE "STRIDES" OUT OF PERSHING HIGH. LET'S HEAR FROM ALL THE HIGH SCHOOLS OUT THERE. WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE TEMPTATIONS WANNABEE GROUP?

HOW ABOUT THE "CAVALIERS"...AND I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE "DRAMATICS" FIT INTO THAT CATAGORY BEFORE THEY STARTED RECORDING IN THE LARRY DEMPS (SQUIRRELL) DAYS BEFORE LENNY MAYES.

Who is singing lead on "Always" by the Distants? Otis? Is that Melvin doing the bass parts?

My favorite Tempts wanna-be group was Philadelphia's Temptones (no lie - that's their name!). They were a white quartet led by Darry Hohl (later known as Darryl Hall of Hall & Oates) and recorded for the Artic label in 1966-67. "Girl I Love You" & "Say These Words Of Love" were two of probably the many tracks they cut in Philly.

That's Richard Street in one of his finest recorded moments - and yes, that's Melvin's wonderful bass in there.

KEVGO,The Temptones were a pretty good group that cut some nice sounds on the Arctic Label.Around 1964 Daryl Hall met up with the then lead singer of The Clovels,Len Barry who in turn introduced him to Thom Bell,3 Degrees and also The Delfonics.(who all would be famous in later years to come). With Daryls introduction to so many people through Len Barry, this obviously helped his career immensley.Along with 4 Jewish guys from West Philly and Mountairy, who were,Barry Glazer,Paul Fogel,Kenny Halpern and Brian Utain who along with Oates formed The Temptones.Who would become the second hottest white band in Philly, after The Magnificent Men,this was around 1966.Both these bands would try to out do each other whenever they appeared on stage at the Uptown Theatre in philly. The Temptations heavily influenced the Temptones, and whenever they appeared at a local concert,The Temptones would always be backstage and trying to meet their hero's.Paul Wilson of the Temptations would give them good advice and ideas. And apparantley even bought the 5 guys magenton sharkskin suits.Towards the end of 1966,the Temptones won a talent show held by radio wdas disc jockey,Jimmy Bishop, who was so impressed asked them to record a single on his North Broad Street Label Arctic.Which Jimmy ran with a Mr.Benny Krass. The record was Girl I Love You on Arctic 130.It was self penned by Oates&Glazer and under the watchful and experienced eye of Mr.Frank Virtue at his recording studios. The song got them a guest spot on The Jerry Blavant T.V.show,who was not only a local celebrity but was also heavily involved in the record buisness.(whose name appears on many Lost Nite L.P.s)Anyway on the show that night they did a version of the Detroit Spinners classic,Ill Always Love You.Around 1968 whilst on Joe butterball Tamburro's bill, they met Lead singer of The Masters,John Oates.Who briefly played guitar on The Temptones, but they broke up shortly afterwards.Thats it,Temptones on Arctic records,130/Girl I Love You/GoodBye.136/Say these words of love/Something Good. Many years later, with Hall&Oates now big stars, they lived out a long time ambition by appearing on stage with The Temptations at the famous Harlem Appolo Theatre.I Have a large blown up pic.of all The Temptones with The Temptations all with there hands placed one over the overs, backstage and probably the Uptown in philly.MEL.

SPEAKING OF THE EARLY SPINNERS...AS I YOUNG KID I PERFORMED ON A SHOW WITH THEM AT MUMFORD HIGH SCHOOL. THIS HAD TO BE AROUND 1957 OR 1958. THE SHOW WAS CALLED "THE SOUND" AND WAS PRODUCED BY IVAN BLOCH, WHO LATER MOVED TO LA TO DO VARIOUS TYPES OF PRODUCTION. BILLY HENDERSON OF THE SPINNERS REMEMBERED THE SHOW WHEN I REMINICSED WITH HIM ABOUT I IN THE 70"S, AND TOLD ME OF IVAN BLOCHS WHEREABOUTS. AT THE TIME, THE SPINNERS WERE AN ACCAPELLO DO-WAP GROUP.

Nice story Stu. As a big fan of the Spinners I really appreciated it. I'd say they never really stopped being a Doo Wop group at heart - which is probably why I love their records!

Thanks for the background info on the Temptones. When David Ruffin passed Daryl wrote a wonderful piece for a trade magazine about how his group met the Tempts and that Paul Williams was a kind supporter of the Temptones (it would be really cool to see that photo of the Temptones and the Temptations together...).
Kind regards,

KEVGO AND MEL; AS A TEENAGER, I ALSO MET PAUL WILLIAMS AT THE MICHIGAN STATE FAIR IN ABOUT 1964. I TOLD PAUL ABOUT THE BAND THAT I WAS PLAYING IN AT THE TIME, AND HE SPENT AT LEAST 45 MINUTES WITH ME AND A COUPLE OF FRIENDS IN THE PARKING LOT TALKING ABOUT MUSIC AND GIVING US ADVISE. I DEVELOPED A GREAT FRIENDSHIP WITH HIM, AND USED TO VISIT HIM AT HIS APARTMENT AND LATER AT HIS NEW HOUSE IN NORTHWEST DETROIT. WHEN THE TEMPTS DID THEIR LIVE PERFORMANCE AT THE ROOSTERTAIL, PAUL HAD ME AND A FRIEND BACKSTAGE WITH THE GROUP. I WAS ABOUT 15 YEARS OLD AND PAUL FURNISHED US WITH DRINKS...HE DID LIKE TO DRINK A BIT AND THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS HAS LONG SINCE PASSED. I REMEMBER BERRY GORDY AND HIS TWO YOUNG SONS DRESSED IN MATCHING SUITS, ACCOMPANIED BY CHRIS CLARK. PAUL WAS THE KINDEST GUY YOU'D EVER WANT TO MEET. I RAN INTO HIM JUST PRIOR TO HIS TRAGIC DEATH, AND OVER LUNCH TOLD ME THAT HE WAS TRYING TO PUT OUT A SOLO L.P...I BELIEVE THAT HE DIED JUST A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER. WHAT A WASTE OF TALENT, AND HE WILL ALWAYS BE MISSED BY A LOT OF PEOPLE.

Thank you so much for sharing your memories of this truly gifted individual.

KEVGO,COMMON,MEL,DAVID,ETC; TEMPTONES...COOL. INTERESTING TO ME ABOUT PAUL WILLIAMS CONNECTION WITH THAT GROUP. PAUL USED TO LECTURE ME THAT INTERRACIAL GROUPS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN, BUT I GUESS THAT A WHITE GROUP SINGING URBAN ORIENTED MUSIC AMOUNTED TO SOMETHING ELSE. PAUL OBVIOUSLY DIDNT KNOW ABOUT FUTURE GROUPS LIKE SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE, ETC...SEE YOU ALL LATER.

RALPH...GOOD POINT, BUT I THINK THAT MOTOWN FROWNED ON BLACK/WHITE GROUPS AT THE TIME, PROBABLY DUE TO THE POLITICAL CLIMATE AT THE TIME,SEEKING TO AVOID CONTRIVERSY IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. NO PROBLEM WITH MUSICIANS, BUT PROBABLY CHOSE NOT TO OFFEND SOUTHERN RACISTS, SINCE A LOT OF REVENUE CAME FROM THAT PART OF THE COUNTRY...JUST A GUESS. I remember reading an interview with the Valadiers
years ago on Goldmine. They said that they had
an integrated lineup when they first auditioned for Berry Gordy ( I guess this would be around
aummer of 1961) who told them to come back when they were either all-black or all-white.

The Falcons were an integrated group when they started - then there was the Impalas (of "I'm
Sorry, I Ran All The Way Home") - and weren't
the original Del-Vikings an integrated group ?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (64.244.93.44 - 64.244.93.44) on Wednesday, October 09, 2002 - 10:46 am:

Davie,
The original Del-Vikings were integrated, yeah. When they reformed for a recent Doo-Wop special in Pittsburgh they were in their original, multiracial line-up.

Stu:
As far as interracial groups were concerned, there were a couple Motown had in the 1960s (that I'm aware of).

The Mynah Birds came from Canada and cut the single "Mynah Bird Hop" which was never released.
The group featured Neil Young (or CSN&Y) on guitar and a very young Rick James.

Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers was probably Motown's most successful interracial band (next to the 1980s Dazz Band) thanks to "Does Your Mama Know About Me" (co-written by group guitarist Tommy Chong).

KevGo
