I've been looking for an image which captures the essence of this phenomenon and helps to explain why people like Mel and myself get caught up in it's mystique.

This is a pic by a Jonas Unger which I found in the NS Fanzine Manifesto.

The elation is there for everyone to see and I especially love the pose of the girl on the left.

I wish our American friends could attend one of these All-Nighters...maybe one day Sis.

What are they dancing to?...my guess is Jimmy Mack's "My World Is On Fire" on Detroit's Palmer label happy

...and if you'd like to see some more pics of soulies enjoying themselves at NS doos, then try:

...with more shots on my own "Anorak's Corner" site, from souling it up in Germany, Italy, Austria, Sweden and even in Japan! It's a small World, and it never ceases to amaze me when a crowd sings/dances along to obscure tunes that only "we" know! :-)

Hey David,I Wouldnt argue with your choice of Jimmy Mack. What a superb record that is,its got it all.You could then slow things down a little with a Robbie Lawson and Burning Sensation.Move your feet to the sound of the beat,Music with soul taking Control,Get ready, ready for the soul call(memory jerker there from 1971 for me)with The Georgia Prophets which took a good couple of months to actually find out what it was, thanks to our kid & co.covering labels up etc.so I couldnt find out what they were. Thanks to our kid though, for playing sounds every morning before school. As I would be on my way with sounds like Soul Time,Boogaloo Party,Baby Reconsider,Poets,Tams, the ultimate Richard Temple as well as the Motown gems all ringing in my ears.Although our kid is no longer on the scene in any way,he once stayed over one week-end and saw my sounds eagerly pulled out the sounds he remembered. And got me to tape them,no matter which way life leads you, once youve been on this scene, the sounds will never leave you.MEL.
