As long as noone reads the title incorrectly and flies off the handle because there will never be another Melvin Franklin, and how much kinder could you want him to be, anyway? ... things should be OK. :)

...as a bit of useless triva, the actor who played Melvin in the miniseries (D. B. Woodside) is now a semi-regular on the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The actor who played Richard Street (J. August Richards) has been a regular on Angel, the spin-off from the same producers, for over a year now. I wonder if the producers were fans of the miniseries?

Regards,

Can someone shed some like about Melvin's background vocals with the 70 Supremes, if any? I know of his work with the Marvelettes on "My Baby Must Be A Magician". There is an unreleased track on the MSC set of Supremes titled "Mr. Boogie Man".....is this Melvin or Geoffrey Holder or somebody else? And on the Supremes last LP "MSS", this album contains a single male voice on some tracks........thanks.........Prom

And I just now noticed I omited the K in Melvin's last name. Apologies to all.

Does anybody remember Emperor Rosko, the DJ? He was on Radio One here in the UK in the early seventies. He loved soul music and he released 3 Atlantic albums with the usual great tracks you would expect from the label. In addition the albums had his radio patter and jingles he had made at Pams on, similar I suppose to the Cruisin albums. They were an education for me, but one of the jingles (I thought it was a jingle) he used was 'this is the power of love' from 'My baby must be a magician'. Until I heard that track, Mr Franklin graced one of Motown competitors albums as a jingle intro.

I used to listen to Emperor Rosko on a daily basis.

There was definitely an edge to his programmes.

Good memories.

Thanks Carl

...and just like that, a most interesting discussion on record companies vs artists has been shelved... I really dig this site and appreciate what Dave, Ralph, Lowell et al have done here, but am I the only one who thought AH raised a number of legitimate and pertinant arguments in the pre-kinder/gentler Melvin F thread? /Erik, Just another curious music freak who didn't want to revive the previous thread as it was shut down

Erik,

This is my personal opinion - nothing to do with
David, Ralph or anybody else.

The topic was closed not because there was
anything inherently wrong with it but because
Andrew was going "over the top" in his argument
in insulting other forum members and at times
not listening to what they were saying before firing off an intemperate response.

I doubt there's anybody that disagrees with Andrew
just the way he was expressing himself.

I'd like to see him back here - it's just that
when you're busy typing away about something you feel strongly about it's sometimes easy to forget
that other people have a right to express their
viewpoint without being "flamed"

The person who was most hard done to was Sue
who was being accused of saying things that
she hadn't and Andrew wouldn't slow down enough
to listen to her.

Erik,
Read Davie's response very carefully. He really nails the essence of the problem. Most certainly AH was entited to his opinion as all of us are here. That is what makes it a forum. However as I have mentioned many times here, the people on this forum are the nicest, kindest group of people I have ever had the pleasure of communicating with. We treat one another with utmost respect here. I'm sure AH was passionatly trying to make his points in the discussions but he was crossing a couple of lines in so doing that somewhat compromised the civility of this place.

I wasn't going to comment, but I shall at this point. Andrew tells me it's very unlikely he'll be returning to this Forum, or my Soulsville group either. He has told me many fascinating, and sometimes startling things - in confidence - over the past few years, and I know that the few horror stories he posted here are simply the tip of a huge and rather grubby iceberg.

Believe me, I'm not "taking sides" as regards what happened here - it was a discussion where I was only a interested observer, but I hope we'd agree that a number of serious and relevant points were raised by all, before the fur began to fly.

Incidentally, the question of artists and royalties (or lack of) is a hot topic on a number of message boards at present, so it's either a total coincidence, or there must be something in the internet's collective air.

Dis-regarding what happened before, and I am not taking sides,I would like to add that AH was a very knowledgeable guy,who certainly put me on to a lot of information that I would never of known. And I was sorry to see him go.Ritchie,if you are ever in touch with him again could you send him my regards.Things did get heated and dont forget that Sue got the blunt edge of the sword. But thats all in the past. And I should know, after my altercation with The Count, who I can now, call a friend of mine.'Nuff Said.MEL.
