Look in this week's Entertainment Weekly movie lead story to see some fabulous feedback on the festival screening. I couldn't find a a webpage with that piece, so just get it on the newsstand.

Excellent news or what?! Those of us out in the sticks will be counting on our friends in the Smoke to give us the full lowdown.

Well done, Paul. I'm sure you'll find the film will receive a very warm welcome on these shores!

Re: SITSOM in Italy,

Gabrielle, I hope so too. Our international sales agent is vigorously pursuing distribution agreements in pretty much everywhere except maybe Antarctica, and probably there too.

We just have to convince the distributors that there will be a ticket-buying audience for the film. Film festivals are probably the best way, since there the buyers can see how well the film plays to a crowd. Once we get our first distribution deal in Europe, it should spread out more easily.

But, for what it's worth, there seems to be a whole lot of interest in the film, from distributors all around the world. We have at least one deal in the handshake stage -- once we close it I can make the announcement. It isn't in Italy, though.

Take care,
Paul

Yesterday, Richard Searling played on his radio show a couple of tracks from the soundtrack to SITSOM. From the build-up they had to be pretty good but when I heard them, it's like stepping back 30-odd years. 'You Keep Me Hanging On' instrumental was out of this world. I've just about rolled the tongue back in. Awesome! Can't wait for the film!

Re: Soundtrack,

I agree, the instrumentals are really cool. It is amazing to hear all the details that had been covered up by those darn vocals!

Don't forget, the soundtrack CD should hit the stores tomorrow (Tuesday). Give us a hand, and if you don't see it, ask for it. Buying one would be good, too, but don't let me twist your arm!

Thanks,

This is Lonnie Wilson friend of Allan from the Majestic days. I live in the Houston, TX area. Just wanted to let you know that I went looking for the CD at Sam Goody's, Warehouse and Best Buy and they did not have it in the stores yet. Warehouse was the only store that showed it as releasing today. However they could not tell me when they would have it. I'm going to check on a couple of other stores this evening. Looking forward to hearing this great music.

Folks,

One more thing to think about: ordering the SITSOM soundtrack from amazon.com isn't the cheapest way, but it also promotes the soundtrack by getting it up the chart so that it will be browsed by more people.

This is the way albums by Eva Cassidy, Josh Groban and John Mayer got so big, not to mention O Brother Where Art Thou. So it's a way to set a little trap that will bring more buyers to the party.

When you hear Bootsy, a smile will come on your face because he makes you smile. Bernadette is playing right now. OHHHHHHHHHHHH, LEVI JUST SAID "BERNADETTE". OMG, What an affect that had on me. PAUL - That is fabulous!!!!! OK, gotta go now, Gerald Levert is singing "Reach Out", and my head is bobbin back and forth. See you later, gonna concentrate.

Folks, Not to nag, but as of today, SITSOM soundtrack went from 900-something to 505 in amazon.com best-seller list. Makes a big difference if a few people order it online...

I think there is every reason to believe that this soundtrack could be, if not O Brother, a 6-million seller, very possibly it could be I Am Sam, (loving compilation of Beatles covers, remember?) a near-million seller. Which of course, would only encourage more investment in this kind of project. Am I clear, my lovely friends?

Picked up the soundtrack today. Excellent! As a native Detroiter who grew up loving the Motown Sound it always bothered me that the names of the guys who played on all of those classics were NEVER mentioned. I am so glad to see those brothers finally getting some play after all of these years! Looking forward to the movie. While it may not be a commercial smash, again I'm just glad that some folks who have given so many people so much pleasure over a liftime are getting the proper attention!

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (205.188.208.135 - 205.188.208.135) on Tuesday, September 24, 2002 - 09:58 pm:

Hi y'all.
Glad you liked the story Sis.

Greg I wouldn't discount "commercial smash" just yet. A hard-bitten New York-born, seen-everything newspaper editor I know went to see The Banger Sisters over the weekend and said they played the SITSOM trailer -- and he was blown away. He figured it would be a very cool but not-so-slick, homespun production. Instead he was shocked to find a very impressive, high-quality product.

TOLD you, was my response. "We were there from the beginning," he replied, grinning.

THANK YOU (((Funk Brothers)))!!!

The soundtrack is as good as advertised. The mix of the Bernadette backing track is chill-inducing. Gerald Levert is insane to go after Reach Out and Shotgun, but he acquits himself well. Joan Osborne ought to be giving singing lessons to most of the mini-divas on the radio these days. Bootsy is..well...Bootsy. {Understatement Alert!} The band sounds pretty good, too. ;)

Larry... Hey. I am smiling. And the choice to place "Heat Wave" as track #1 was a brilliant choice. That song gets you in the groove. The movie is going to be a smash.

Sue, have you talked to Mayor Kilpatrick about his thoughts on SITSOM? Dennis Edwards will be at the Int'l Market Place tonight, starting at 6pm. (an affair for some judge) You should be there to get a thought from Dennis re: "Cloud Nine."

Sis,
Drat I have another party I have to make at 6:30. I've been meaning to catch Dennis E's act. Although I'm not sure if Kwame would give more than a boilerplate happy response about the movie, not sure if he's hip to a lot of Motown -- too young? What would you ask Dennis about "Cloud Nine" -- what he thought of the new version of it?

As some of you know, Martha Reeves wasn't happy about a new version of "Heatwave" ...but that's not to say all the veteran acts would feel that way, I don't know.

Top of pageBottom of page   By SisDetroit (67.25.219.163 - 67.25.219.163) on Thursday, September 26, 2002 - 02:30 pm:

LOL..Yeah, I was there when she told Allan about her feelings. But Dennis wouldn't feel that way. He is no long with that group. I would ask him his opinion on the project as a whole as it relates to the Funk Brothers, and the sounds of Detroit.

In regards to Cloud Nine, I would ask him if he thought the general fans would accept it as a good piece, and if he thinks it could carry over as a hit. The fans would like to hear what Dennis would say. Dennis would give it a thumbs up, because he is open minded. That would make the young fans take notice.

I remember "Rare Earth" took one of the Temptations songs and made a hit, and even though the Tempts was my number one group, Rare Earth became a favorite of mine.

The Mayor is young. (LOL) But Detroit is again in the spot light. He needs to be educated on the music his mother loved. :o)

I'm now grooving with "THE FLICK" EARL VAN DYKE - Who is on that guitar solo?

I'm back. I love music! That's what the OJays said, and that is true for me. The heartbeat of soul. Musicians do not get enough recognition. The Funk Brothers were the heartbeat of soul in my days. They provided the beautiful music by which we danced, and of which songs we sung all day everyday. Yet, what did the young man say in the previews.."Who are the Funk Brothers?" Well, if I just sit back and enjoy the Funk Brothers all by myself, that would be selfish. Why should I keep a good thing to myself?

Sue...I had nothing to loose, and everything to gain. :o) I enjoyed the show and took pictures. Having a little brother can be rewarding sometimes. I had to wait for him to come from backstage. Patiently waiting, here he comes with Dennis. (smile) I continued to sit. (A psych thing) I was introduced, I held my hand out, and he reached down and gave me a kiss on the cheek. (I didn't ask for it) Anyway, I asked him if he had heard of SITSOM. He acknowledged that he had. I asked if he had heard the soundtrack, which had been released on Tuesday. He said he hadn't. I told him he should get it and listen to it as soon as possible. It is the Funk Brothers playing with other performers, and one of the songs is "Cloud Nine". He said "Oh really, that's great". I encouraged him to get the soundtrack asap. He said he really want to see the movie. I said he will be out in November, but the meantime have someone go out and get the soundtrack. He said he would. (of course my brother took a picuture of us.)

And guess what Susan? As we were saying our good-byes, I said "Oh yeah, Susan Whitall of the Detroit News would like to interview you". He looked at his valet, and said "GIVE HER MY PHONE NUMBER." (LOL)

Did I pass the test, Sue, am I hired? (LOL)

Ritchie, I refrained and I toned this report down a little. :o)

Oh, man, you are thinking of Montel Williams, who is courageously battling multiple sclerosis and has a daily syndicated talk show.

Montel Jordan is a talented singer who had one of the probably top 5 party classics of the 90s by adapting Slick Rick's "Children's Story" as "This is How We Do It."

He's also extremely courageous for actually standing with Chaka Khan onstage and duetting with her. Excellent handling of the material...

The background singers are John Ingram, Carla Benson, Keith Benson, Misty Love, Cherokee Pree, and Delbert Nelson. All are great singers. We had Johnny, Carla, and Keith on-stage at the Los Angeles Funk Brothers party, and they were incredible. I think that it is principally Carla Benson and Johnny Ingram backing up MeShell on Cloud Nine.

MeShell Ndegeocello was a favorite of mine long before I became involved with SITSOM. She is a killer bass player, and she writes and sings with such passion. She has four CDs out: "Plantation Lulabies", "Peace Beyond Passion", "Bitter", and, just released, "Cookie: The Anthrolopological Miz Tape". I would call her music hip-hop / jazz / ballad / soul. All four CDs have their own particular voice. You really have to hear all four to get an idea of what MeShell is about, but there is a strong political and sexual element to much of what she does. We've got a link to her webpage on our SITSOM site, and here is another you might find interesting: http://www.freemyheart.com/

Earlier, on the Babbitt thread, I mentioned Joan Osborne's new CD. I hadn't heard it yet, and what I said might have sounded like faint praise. Well, I've been listening to it, and I really like it. It is definitely *not* Motown -- a lot of Motown songs, but totally different arrangements on most of them. A few so-so tracks (IMO), but many are wonderful. She makes these her own songs. By the way, MeShell plays some funky bass on "Smiling Faces" (on Joan's new CD).

Just my opinion,
Paul

For those Brits who would like to see the movie at the Odeon, Leicester Square, the ticket office will be open the 18th October, unless you are a member of the RLFF and you can book now! The joining fee is £20, which gives discount on tickets and priority bookings. I hope my paperwork will be in the post today, so I can get cracking and book BOTH showings.

I do not speak for the Funk Brothers, but some performance dates are being arranged in support of the film's release. I know that they are making plans beyond that, but I don't think there is anything definite yet. When I get some news, I will certainly put it up on our website, and I am sure it will also be announced here.

I'm still lovin' this SITSOM CD and anxiously awaiting to see the movie.

Let me share this with you all, it seems I can't even go to the grocery store without taking this CD with me, listening to it on the way to and from the store, putting it in my purse while I'm IN the store, (just in case someone forces my car open to get it - LOL). There is a guy that works in the store (mid 50s, grew up in Detroit, I'm in Orlando), I take the CD for him so see. When he sees the cover he is like WOW, he follows me to my car, I put the CD in the player and it's like we are 16 again and I have BERNADETTE full volume and he is going "WOW WOW, I have goosebumps", then I play the Funk Brothers intro and this guy is about to fall out! He has a small independent radio station here and is going to buy the CD and start promoting it on his show.

I am so indebted to the Funk Brothers for all the music they have provided to everyone and I will continue to spread the WORD!
Thank you!

Harry's correct, Eddie Willis on the bridge.

I don't want to give the wrong impression here -- The true driving force behind SITSOM is Allan Slutsky, with Paul Justman (the director). Allan, Paul Justman, and Harry are the ones responsible for what you hear on the soundtrack.

I will take some credit for helping finance this adventure, and I am a true fan, but I came fairly late to the party. I just happen to be an internet junkie too, so you hear from me more than the others. Plus, I run our website as a hobby. There are plenty of others who deserve thanks and credit for making this happen; in particular, Sandy Passman, one of the producers of the film was key. Full credits are on the website ;-)

Best,
Paul

Wow.

My copy of the soundtrack arrived in the mail sometime today...I got home from rehearsal just after midnight. It went in the cd player immediately.

Now, two hours later, let me just say, I danced. I smiled uncontrollably. My jaw dropped. I cried.

I am 30 yrs old. My parents are from Detroit and apparently it was unavoidable--I now know why I am a bass player.

The FUNKS are incredible.

The singing is incredible--not carbon copies of the originals, but you can tell how very IMPORTANT this was to them...

These are difficult times we live in and we have to grab the humor when we can...that's why I want to share this with you all.

I work from my home as I type x-ray reports for a hospital here in Orlando. Afternoons are hard for me and I try to think of different ways to get thru it. Well, today I turned to my favorite CD (SITSOM), put on the intro of the Funk Brothers. Well, as I turned it on, I noticed a chameleon (lizard) was perched on my outside window. Apparently he had started to leave, but when I turned on the music he stopped, turned his head and looked me directly into my face, bobbed his head up and down, and then I got so caught up in the moment I started singing AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH to this lizard! This is the affect the Funk Brothers have on me, singing to a darned lizard! and him watching me the whole time! Well anyway, when I got done singing (LOL), I decided to turn down the volume and I saw this little guy start to leave, then I pumped up the volume AGAIN and sure enough here he comes back for more!

Well, anyway, talk about spreading the word, this takes ALL! (I don't know what's worse, singing to a lizard or sharing this story, maybe I need to "check myself") :-)

I don't think that there is anything in the works with PBS, not to say that it couldn't happen. Our North American distributer, Artisan, has a deal with Showtime, so I would assume that this is the first place SITSOM will turn up on TV.

Other news:

Harry ,
In the 'U.S.A. Today' article Universal Music Enterprises President Bruce Resnikoff indicates that following the release of SITSOM, there will be a 12-18 month campaign effort to revitalize the entire Motown catalogue. Those on this forum who are Motowners rejoice. But in order to revitalize the entire catalogue it would take much longer than that, wouldn't it? Motown isn't going to take a few steps backward and just pull any old tapes from the shelves just to get the product out there , are they? Kevin Reeves, Jeff Willens, and Suha Gur have worked extremely well with you and your staff to bring us quality product these last few years. I'd hate to see a regression - but would love to have the music that is not yet re-issued on cd and more of those fabulous previously unreleased gems from the vault.

Re-vitalise the catalog(ue)? I didn't realise it was ill...

Things look pretty healthy from where I'm sitting - but of course I'm fortunate to be on the side of the pond where the music's still adored, respected and treasured, and in return - we get the lion's share of the goodies :)

The problem with revitalising the back catalogue was it usually meant re issuing yet again the same forty tracks. However with a cellarful of motown, The Big hits and hard to find classics and the individual essential, ultimate and early classic releases it might mean a bit more spent on promotion. It might also mean the first official CD release for Earl van Dyke and the Soul brothers album

As the film is nearing general release in the states, what is being done on a promotional level

There have been dozens if not hundreds of major reviews and news stories. The Funks and the producer and director have been in several cities doing interviews and presenting the film. Artisan (the film) and Universal/Hip-O (the soundtrack) have done a massive job before the film is even due. I believe this forum and the message boards at boards.motown.com are littered with links to these stories and reviews. Our own Sue has covered this at length as well - of course

Paul? Any further two cents?

As a little aside, I note that promotional trade ads for the movie are already being listed on eBay as "valuable collectors items". A good sign for a movie that's not even hit the streets, I'd say.

Promotion --

Yes, Artisan and Hip-O/Motown are working very hard on the promotion of the film and soundtrack. Many of the reviews and magazine/newspaper articles are now "in the bank", to be released a little closer to the film release date (Nov 15). If we had an unlimited budget, we would already have the TV spots, etc. running, but this isn't "Star Wars". Some reviews are out and more are coming. Radio mentions are starting to happen. The theatrical trailer is playing broadly. Upcoming issues of magazines will have articles about SITSOM. There are more promotional events being planned for just prior to the Nov 15 release. The media blitz is now beginning to shift into high gear.

The film festival circuit is providing a great opportunity for media exposure, too. Paul Justman, Allan, and various Funk Brothers are traveling from city to city for the festivals, and are spending lots of time with the press. We're getting on-air interviews, and good print coverage. For example, Allan and Joe Hunter just flew from the St. Louis festival to the Mill Valley festival to meet Paul Justmen, spent yesterday with the press and then left last night to recover in time for the Austin festival.

And just so you know, personally, I'm a passenger on this bus now -- Artisan and Hip-O/Motown are driving, and doing a great job. I still make comments and suggestions, and I'm definitely enjoying the ride!

Best,
Paul

Yes, Dave. I defy any lover of our music to watch the trailer and be unmoved. Heaven knows how many times I've watched it, but my eyes are wet every time. It's mostly tears of joy, but some are for those who have gone on.
