At the weekend, I listened to Carla Thomas' Memphis Queen album for the first time and it was just like meeting old friends.

I Play For Keeps is Jackey Beavers' I Need My Baby with different words, He's Beating Your Time and Unyielding were recorded earlier by Steve Mancha, the former as Your Love Got Sweeter, but not released, Strung Out Over You was done later by the Dells (much better IMO) and How Can You Throw My Love Away reminds me a lot of another Groovesville song which I can't put my finger on exactly, Hate Yourself In The Morning maybe.

Johnnie Taylor also recorded some earlier Detroit songs, like Testify, Friday Night, I Don't Wanna Lose You and Please Let Me In, sometimes quite differently to the original.
