Hey Katherine

Hope you get to read this because The Marvelettes have always held a special place in my record collection.

I first encountered the Marvelettes in a small deletions record box in the centre of my home town, Glasgow.

Even though I had never heard of the group before I knew that anything on Tamla (Motown) was safe and hurried home to play it.

It was "When You're Young And In Love"/"The Day You Take One".....I loved it!

On the Northern Soul scene I would discover "I'll Keep Holding On"...a true floor filler.

Later I would come across an album which I cherish to this day and from which, as you know, these pics are lifted.

"Sophisticated Soul" is a true collectors piece in this country. Music of the highest calibre and of which you can be so proud.

"My Baby Must Be A Magician" is right up there with the best of the Motown Sound.

Thanks Katherine!

David (in Scotland)

The dark skin beauty in the second picture with Kathrine and Wanda is Ann Bogan from Cleveland, Ohio who still lives here; in fact, she never moved. She previously sang with Challengers III on Tri-Phi and also did duets with Harvey Fuqua as Harvey and Ann. She later sang with Love, Peace and Happiness (on RCA) with Melvin and Leslie Wilson who also sang with New Birth at the time, as did Ann on occasion. Harvey discovered her singing in a church on Quincy Avenue.

Isn't Katherine fine!? Now you see why she's one of my Top 10 Motown Babes.

"Too many Fish in the Sea" always seemed like the perfect record to me. The strong into and undercurrent piano drive the song along and the vocals are coy and faultless---I especially like when they trade leads---"Short ones, tall ones, fine ones, kind ones---too many fish in the sea."
Great lyrics too.

Hi Katherine !

I heard you'd recently suffered from a stroke -
hope you're getting over it and that you'll
soon be back to full health.

Just wanted to say thanks for so many hours of
pleasure you and the other girls have given us over the years. If you've got time drop by again
as we'd love to hear from you and ask you a few questions.

With all due respect to the other Motown girls
I always thought that "Sophisticated Soul" was
the classiest Motown album sleeve and you all
looked wonderful on the cover. It made a change
from some photos I've seen where you had to crouch down so that Wanda didn't look so tiny !

Small one - Wanda
Tall one - Katherine
Fine one - Gladys
Kind one - Georgeanna ?

This is wonderful to know that one of the singers from the first Motown girl group has posted here in the forum! I'm just in awed by it all! Peace & blessings to you Mrs. Shaffner & I pray for your speedy recovery. Wow! I also saw you on E! entertainment, I think last summer, when they did a segment of about the life of Flo Ballard from the Supremes. Maybe we can get E! or VH1 do a behind the scenes on the Marvelettes? That would be awesome! :o)

Peace!

Katherine (Kat),
I've been a longtime Marvelettes fan since I was a young boy and my brother gave me his copy of The Marvelettes Greatest Hits as a gift. You, Wanda, Ann & Georgina were the first girl group I heard in my life and by far the greatest (and sexiest!) that ever existed. The SOPHISTICATED SOUL LP is one of my favorites as well (it was great to see the photos again!). Best of luck to you always and please be in touch.

I too have been a longtime Marvelette fan since I was five years old. I remember when I bought the very last album The Return Of The Marvelettes in 1970! Hi Katherine,

I will never forget the first time that I heard Please Mr Postman. I almost broke my neck running to Kae Williams record shop in North Philly to buy it. Deliver the letter with that echo just floored me.
I was just starting out in the music biz myself at the time and I actually was playing guitar with an act on the same bill with you. I plainly remember the FIVE of you coming in with a female chaperone who was guiding you towaed the dressing room. I since went on to be a record producer/ songwriter and musician as part of the emerging
sound of Philadelphia.

God Bless!!!!!

Katherine...What a honor to see you here on this forum! Everyone seems very nice and helpful here, and it's especially nice to have the original group members join in! I understand that in 1959 some the Marvelettes were then the Del-Rhythmetts who recorded "Chic-A-Boomer" a light Latin-tingled rocker for the tiny JVB Label. Were you on this session or was Gladys the only Marvelette on this? Also, as the Darnells w/The Andantes in 1963 on "Come on Home Gordy" (on Tamla I believe), were you on that song? I'm trying to piece together my discographical notes I have from various sources. Again, welcome aboard, and I hope to hear more from you!

In harmony,

Hello Kat,

I forgot to name my favorite Marvelettes songs: "When you're young & in love", "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game, & "Knock On My Door". I've never gotten a chance to actually hear more songs by the Marvelettes. Unfortunately, I was born way almost decade later when Motown was established. I'm hoping to get the Marvelettes "Ultimate Collection" to hear more great tunes. Besides being beautiful women, you guys wore some nice outfits!

Peace!:o)

Hey LeVan...me too! I play that tape to death, and I'm glad to hear its on DVD...you can skip right to it...I also have a tape from a website called "The Video Beat". The tape is called "Apollo Presents The Motortown Revue"...this contains a live performance by the Marvelettes doing a medley of most of their hits at that time...I think around 1963...then, they perform a highly charged rendition of "Locking Up My Heart" wherein Wanda really takes it home, and the rest of the group are obviously having a great deal of fun with the song...check it out.

I've always had a warm spot in my heart for you even before I had a chance to work with you as a producer.
I always felt you were the finest young lady in the group and the most mysterious. I never said a word due to my respect for J,but had it not been for that I probably would have got myself in trouble LOL.
You have been and always will be my favorite Marvelette. It was nice to hear about the Stamp the group was honored with and I got the word on the pajama party after the awards LOL. I know you're saying who in the heck is this. Well, it's just an old friend who's always had a quiet respect for you

1st. i'am so grateful to all of you for being so kind. But I think I'd better clear up somethings** We never song or did any work before 1961, so therefore we never song with Del Rymics (sp) or any other group. we were just 16 or 17,still in school and trying out for our school talent show. We loved singing and dancing, we were just kids having fun.
So many of you wanted to know if I had and e-mail address, no I don't at the moment. It's hard enough to answer you here, because It takes me so long to read anything since my stroke. I don't process things as I feel I should, but I still try. Iwill let you know when I get one.

It is a great pleasure to give props to my favorite lady, Katherine from my favorite Motown group, The Marvelettes.

As a native Detroiter, I had the pleasure of seeing you ladies perform many holiday seasons in Detroit at the Fox Theatre and you always tore it up! My favorite performance had to be when you ladies did "Danger! Heartbreak Dead Ahead" with those picket signs. Great! I'd never see four ladies in tight black skirts with spiked heels and bouffant hair-dos put on a show that brought the house down! Oh, what a show and what memories!

My favorite album has to be "Playboy" with that classic cover of you ladies up in the windows looking down on that guy and the sign on the door that says "Marvelettes-Not Home." That was only cover I recall that had all five of the Marvelettes pictured. Priceless!

Heard you're a little under the weather, Katherine. My blessings for a speedy recovery..
