Voices From the Shadows featured her as a cover story not too long ago. She was attempting to reactivate her career on the revived Volt label.

Someone mentioned to me that she's no longer with Volt. I forget which label she's with now.

Best,

Mark

Wasn't Dottie Cambridge also an alias for Dorothy Moore? I have heard this, but I have no first-hand knowledge of its accuracy.

Not too long ago in Shades of Soul, there was a scan of a record Dorothy Moore did with a different group for ABC. Can't remember the title, but the blurb in SOS said that the record might go up in value.

Anyone know it? Is it any good?

Best,

Mark

Can anyone verify what recordboyusa said about Dorothy Moore being Dottie Cambridge, and if so,the same one that cut Cry your eyes out on M.G.M.Records.(and a Torch/Mecca monster). As well as the Poppies classics on the scene as Lullaby of love, pain in my heart etc.MEL.

Jeff,

Re Dorothy Moore being Dotty Cambridge - as far
as I know she's never admitted it in interviews
but maybe nobody asked her.

I think it's quite likely - the Dottie Cambridge
MGM sides are Huey Meaux productions. The Poppies
worked at Cliff & Ed Thomas' studio which Huey
Meaux regularly used. The Dottie Cambridge records
fit in between the breakup of the Poppies and the
emergence of Dorothy's first records. I'd have to
listen to the records again to say for definite
but the balance of probabilities is that they're
the same.

Incidentally it might have been on the Apollo Jams
forum I mentioned at some point that Dorothy was
also supposed to have recorded as Dorothy and
the Hesitations on Jamie. Turns out there's
another Dorothy Moore ( from Philadelphia) who
later on was half of Chee Chee and Peppy on
Buddah. The Jamie disc must be by the "other"
Dorothy Moore.

Mark,

That would be the Dolletts - haven't heard it
but as far I remember it's supposed to be pretty ordinary. As for money values - who knows -
Dorothy has a hard enough time selling her albums
but who can guess what'll happen when the
Dolletts start being described as "northern"

Does anyone remember Lullaby of Love by the Poppies?? Sort of like Lovers Concerto by The Toys.

Chee Chee and Peppy, wow. Haven't heard those names in eons.
BTW.. There is a great remake of Misty Blue on the Mary J. Blige live cd!!

Vickie,

Dorothy's most recent album was in 1998 for the
601 label. The last interview I read with her
(a good eight years ago) said she was living
in , I think, Atlanta at the time.

For an overview of her career and details of her
CD's have a look at www.allmusic.com

Key in "Dorothy Moore" in the search box and that'll
get to you to a biography and CD discography.
Clicking on individual CD titles will bring up
information on that particular CD

Davie,
Your knowledge never ceases me to amaze me. I did hear about a "Dorothy Moore" being a part of Chee Chee & Peppy, but that is so obviously not the "Misty Blue"/Poppees woman. I have not heard Dorothy & The Hesitations. I really like the groove on "I Know I'm In Love" by Chee Chee & Peppy but I can't stand those voices!

Bobby, "Lullabye of Love" was a big hit here in Miami. I think the girls did a great job on "He's Ready", which was later covered by the Spiral Starecase.

Mark, I haven't heard the Dolettes either. There sure are some elusive girl group tracks on ABC!

David, the most recent SOS issue I have is the one from May 2002 (#30). I have them going back to 22 or 23. The scan may be in #29, I'm not sure.

Re Dorothy & the Hesitations: one review said it was a Southern record, not sure where I read it. I have both sides of the 45 on the now out-of-print CD on Bear Family, "On the Philadelphia Beat", which I do recommend if you can score a copy somewhere.

Best,

Mark

Aw Shucks, Jeff - thanks. Actually it was our
mutual friend James Porter that triggered this.
He mentioned Chee-Chee and Peppy in his article on
black bubblegum in "Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth" and said that one of them was Dorothy
Moore - that's when it clicked that there were
two Dorothy Moore's and the fact that Chee-Chee
and Peppy were a Philadelphia act led me to the
mysterious Dorothy and the Hesitations.

I wonder just how old the Philly Dorothy Moore is-
James describes the Chee-Chee and Peppy disc as one of those kiddie discs like the Ponderosa Twins
but the Dorothy and the Hesitations disc is a
good three years earlier. I've yet to hear it - is
it another kiddie-lead record ?

Mel,
if you do manage to dig out your copy of the single would you mind posting the writer / producer credits. We might as well finish this
one off.

Mel,

Thanks - that's thrown a spanner in the works

It looks as if the Jamie disc is the Dorothy
Moore of "Misty Blue" fame

MAC = Mississippi Artists Corporation
They were the production co. for among others,
Tommy Tate on Okeh. Ed Thomas and his brother
Cliff with their partner Bob McCree ran a studio
in Jackson, Mississippi. They must've had a deal
with Columbia around late 65 - early 66 where
some of their productions came out on Okeh
while the Poppies were put out on Epic because
they were "poppier" (sorry 'bout that !).

Probably the production deal wasn't renewed by
Columbia when only one hit "Lullaby of Love"
came out of it. The Thomas brothers were working
with Huey Meaux in 1967 on Barbara Lynn material
that was leased / sold to Atlantic. The Dorothy
and the Hesitations disc may have been from a
session that Atlantic didn't want but Jamie
thought was worth a chance.

Now who were the Hesitations ? - the Poppies
under a pseudonym ?

Thanks again Mel - that's another mystery partly
solved ( he said with fingers crossed )

Looking back over this old thread...I recently acquired a second and slightly earlier Dolletts 45 on ABC, called, "Small talk (doesn't bother me)"/"Free from the chains of love" #10625...also a Low-Mac production and C&E Thomas penned...add that to their #10627 (blimey that's close!), "Believe it or not"/"I'm a lonely girl", which credits as Dorothy Moore & The Dolletts.

STDBM is a luverly midtempo almost Mary Wells-ish mover and will appeal to Rare Soul and girl-group fans alike, methinks.

Flynny,

Is that the actual credit "Low-Mac Productions" ?

If so it looks as if the Thomas brothers had a deal going with Atlanta based Bill Lowery - a
lot of his acts were on ABC (Tams, Tommy Roe,
the Roemans)

The fact that the Dolletts two singles have catalogue numbers so close to each other makes me wonder if the first one was withdrawn for some
reason - it would go some way to explaining why
thge records are so scarce.

Could somebody give me the writer / producer
credits for Dottie Jean's single on Okeh.

The record in question is Okeh 7288
"Sweet Daddy Wouldn't Do That" / "Let Me Go Lover"

The writer of the "Sweet Daddy" according to BMI
is country writer Ray Pennington which points to a Southern origin for the disc and given that
Okeh and Epic are related labels this just might
be another "lost" Dorothy Moore / Dottie Cambridge
disc
