Tune in to 1310 AM!

I hear the Beachboys. :o)

Barbara Mason.

Hey All:
Cruising in my Corvette, with my 6 year old in a booster seat LOL (older model "87" of course! no airbags) Blasting KEENER! Sam & Dave Soul Man
Soulaholic

Cool biz Soulaholic.
Just heard Philip Nye doing a new Keener news broadcast -- he'll be doing them throughout the afternoon. Very moving to hear his voice again in the here and now!

Hey All:
I am going to record part of the show and put it on CD.
It will not be for public useage on any other illiegal stuff and all that!!!!!
Soulaholic

They were worried that there might be sporadic outtages as WXDX powers up again today, Farmington, where it's based, still had limited power this morning ...but to my ears there's been no spottiness, the Keener sound has been roaring out of my radio since noon ...
With hmmm, a bit of reverb. I heard young Ryan Schram and Dom of WXDX were building some Keenerlike reverb thing ...and that's as high tech as I, the print journalist, gets ...

Michael Stevens, Keener class of '71, on the air right now.
I never knew back then that he was/is Pat St. John's brother. Anyone else?
"I don't sound the same, but I look exactly the same" he just said. And did I hear him congratulate Dick Purtan on being 81??
Dick's not uh, quite that old is he??

Michael's playing David Ruffin singing "I Want You Back" right now, dedicated to Soulful Detroit ...

I heard "Michael The Lover" which I hadn't heard in ages. I forgot who recorded that song. (Not the one by the Jacksons.)

I loved hearing "Michael the Lover." I forgot the singer, I'll have to Google it...
That was a huge hit in Detroit ...

Sue:
I recall listening to Michael Stevens and Pat St. John on Keener in 1971 and 72, and somehow knew they were brothers. Pat St John always signed off "Thank you for letting me be myself again" (from the Sly Stone song) and little brother Michael Stevens signed off "Thank you for talking to me, Africa", which was the name of the instrumental version of the same song!
Frank
(Picking up a very faint Keener signal in Columbus Ohio)

Frank,
Are you really picking up Keener down there???
Good grief that's better than its signal back in the day.
Sending you Keener is the least Detroit can do, considering you guys caused the blackout (laugh) ...
p.s. who do I sue over the 1A story I was writing, that was on my screen when the power went down?? It was a good one, too!

Michael Stevens sounds great! He ought to get back behind a mic full time!
Frank

Well, I THOUGHT I heard a couple of Keener jingles through the static! Maybe just my active imagination as I sit at my pc, checking out Keener13.com and Soulful Detroit.
Frank

Doesn't he? Funny guy. He needs to give up the suit and the record company job.

Yes, I knew that as well, because Michael and I had a class together at Southfield-Lathrup; he was '71 and I was '74, yet we wound up in the same Contemporary Issues class my freshman year. He sort of helped me catch the radio bug, which I then followed with time at Southfield High School's WSHJ-FM. One of my partners in crime there was Doug Banks. I then went on to a lengthy and obscure broadcasting career, before chucking it for an even more obscure print journalism career. As I type this, Mike's playing "I Wanna Testify." And I heard a dedication to the folks at soulfuldetroit.com when he played the David Ruffin version of "I Want You Back."

Michael just said he may have met the future mothers of Eminem, Kid Rock etc. on Woodward back in the '60s ...then he said "hey maybe I was one of their real dads" ...
Then, after the break, "Eminem called and said he's going to kick my ass."
Weather report: it's raining cats and dogs on Woodward Ave. right now, cooling everybody off no doubt. I'm sticking close to home because I want to keep hearing Keener and I can hear the Dream Cruise right from here.

sorry that wasn't grammatical, I'm laughing too hard to write properly ...!

"Loveland" ...one of my favorites!

Don't set in a poodle, Sue!

Looks like "Michael the Lover" was by Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band.

I was thinking of going up there. Did Eminem really call and say that?

Geno Washington??????? If that is Geno Washington, then that is the best song I ever heard him sing. I love that recording.

Vic nah I am totally dry.
So that's Geno Washington, as opposed to Gino who still lives here?

I believe Michael was done by the C.O.D.s

Sue, did your brother tell you that I've started working for him?

Oh, ok, a different Gino.

The rain is ending, it's not going to be an all-afternoong thing ...
So Frank you really can pull Keener in down in Columbus? Clear Channel must really have upgraded that signal ...Last night when I was driving around and not finding WXDX at all at 1310, I figured it was just like the '60s when the Keener signal was hard to get. I remember driving down Greenfield with my mom toward Northland; the signal would get stronger and stronger the closer we got to the mall. Remember the big radio towers along Greenfield?

Vic,
No, I didn't know that. Copy editing? If so, great! Ask him sometime about the near-riot I caused among his writers by daring to edit them!

If memory serves, the Keener towers were near Southfield/I-94 interchange. There are still towers at 10 Mile/Greenfield; I think tey may originally be for what is now WKQI-FM, with others leasing space on the tower. And there's the WDIV-TV tower in the same neighborhood.

oh my gosh -- an ad for the Gay haven!

And since it's been illegal to broadcast cigarette commercials in the U.S. since about 1971, is there a violation of FCC regulations whenever we hear one of those Tarryton commercials during the Dream Cruise weekend?

Right, I know now that the Greenfield towers weren't for Keener. But I always thought they were as a kid because the signal would get stronger as we drove south.
I tried driving down Greenfield last night but still couldn't get WXDX -- it was knocked off the air of course.

p.s. I think I saw Soulaholic in the blue 'Vette (waving madly) ...

Re Tarryton -- uh oh! Somebody call Scott Westerman ...
And by the way we'll have to work on Scott's pronunciation of "Grande" as in Grande Ballroom. As a class of '72 he wasn't old enough to hang there, but actually I would have had to run away from home to go there as well, but I know it's "Grand-ee" not "Grand-ay" as he was saying ...

I always thought they were at the Ford (I-94?) and Telegraph, somewhere near WJBK's. There used to be a WKNR billboard (traveling eastbound)right by the directional array (6 or 8 towers) with a light that would shine whenever WKNR Contact News was on.

I'll correct him, gently but firmly, when I see him at homecoming ...

Doug, you may well be right. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning, so my KEENER knowledge may be incomplete ...

Ha! Michael is playing "Big Brother" by Rare Earth right now to segue into his big brother, Pat St. John's show ...

And Michael Stevens signs off (and leads into the Pat St. John show) with Rare Earth's "Hey, Big Brother."

Great minds think alike, Vic

Hey, we'll just do a play by play here for the out-of-towners.
Doug, I hope your brother's taping for you. Scotty Regen's at 6 ...

Gladys! Nitty Gritty! Yeah!

But we need the funk! Gotta have the funk!

Sue
Can us folk in the UK get the station on the internet....you guys seem to be having a lot of fun

There is no internet stream -- not legitimately, anyway, because working out the royalty issues proved to difficult. Scott W. says maybe next year...

John,
Sorry no John. Last year it WAS streamed, but Clear Channel stopped streaming -- might have had something to do with song/copyright issues.
Scott Westerman and Steve Schram of keener13.com were all set to stream through an independent server here in Michigan, but the cost proved to be too prohibitive. Paying for the use of all those songs ...the guys are all doing this Keener broadcast for free, for love of the game basically.
If only some smart sponsor had realized the international interest, they would have pumped money in so they could have streamed.
Next best thing, we're trying to encourage them to sell CDs of the weekend.
Mary Wells "What Two Can Easily Do"!

But you'd run into the same problems with the CDs. One way or another, the royalties gotta be paid. Syndicate of Sound proto-garage, "Hey, Little Girl," on now.

Yeah sure, but if they had sponsors and were allowed to simulcast on WNIC, as they should, they'd have the bucks to stream.
Hey Pat's talking about Soulful Detroit ...

Norther Soul Alert! "I'm A Man," from the Dynamics! Wish I could hear "Misery."

He's playing the Dynamics' "I'm the Man"!
For the out of towners, we're getting the old commercials too, and the classic Keener jingles. Pat and Michael both managed to do that but stay very present, and modern ...

That lead in the Dynamics sounds like Smokie.

Re the CDs and royalties, yeah but at a certain number it pays off -- so if they say, had a link on Soulful Detroit where people could indicate that they'd buy it, then they could assess whether or not it'd be financially feasible.
Another Soulful Detroit request coming up, Pat says ...

"It is great to be back in the MotorCity."
Vernors, and Faygo. That's great.

Classic Faygo Root Beer commercial from the '50s-'60s.

Then a Michael Savage promo for WXDX. Ruins the mood ...

Oh man, I was just going to say that. I know they have to run those ads -- the price of being given the airtime, but ick.

I love this Kmart commercial!

At the very least, Gene Merollis should kick in for the million free ads he's getting!

Savage was probably a non-paid promo, not a paid commercial, but the effect is the same.

But I don't think Gene's dealership is still "on Ford Road Just West Of Mer-Ri-Man ...," so they'd be going to the wrong place ... right?

Elvis -- "You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care)."

So, just surprise me with "The Motown Story" CD. :o)

From Elvis to the Funk Brothers, to Dennis Edwards.

I am profoundly impressed at how much work these guys, especially Scott Westerman, put into the Dream Cruise show, to say nothing of his year-round work on the Keener13.com web site. There are few sites of this nature that are regularly updated with such well written essays and news items. If there is any other site devoted to a 60s Top 40 station that is more comprehensive than Keener13.com, I sure haven't found it!
It is obviously a huge labor of love, and we all appreciate it!
Frank

Cool, he's playing the extended version of "Psychedelic Shack" by the Tempts, as heard on the Psychedelic Temptations album ...

There's a great, long Funk Brothers jam on this if you guys haven't heard it ...

Good job, Huggybear!

Harch, if you want to see another Westerman production, go to msucampusradio.org.

Vic:
Already check in on that one occasionally! (Even though I'm a Wolverine, not a Spartan!)
And I check his WestermanWay site as well.
Also subscribed to his e-emergency service.
Guess I'm a pretty big fan!

JC Penney Plain Pockets jeans commercial ... wow! Everly's, "Gone Gone Gone"

plain pockets ... as opposed to what?
I'm waiting for a "Teen Man" commercial ...

The only difference is the pocket ... and the price. Then interview with Ricard ? of Richard and the Young Lions, followed by I Wanna Love You Some More!

Beatles -- No Reply.

The Beatles' "No Reply"

Eddie Holland, "Leaving Here"
Great Earl Van Dyke- led Funks jam ...

New Girl in School -- Jan & Dean

Story of My Life -- Unrelated Segments!

Baby Please Don't Go -- Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes!

Wow ...a time when Ted's music was more important than his politics!

You hear "Journey to the Center of your Mind" today occasionally on the rock stations but rarely if ever "Baby Please Don't Go" by the Amboy Dukes ...
My Creem-mate Jaan Uhelszki graduated from Southfield High in '69, I'll have to ask her if she remembers Pat.

My Genberation -- The Who -- re-creating the legendary Southfield High Thanksgiving Eve 1967 concert ...

This is simply NOT fair on us poor overseas folk. LOL
Enjoy it guys!!!!!!
PS I LOVE that extended Psychedelic Shack too Sue and soulful detroiter, Russ Terrana mixed that album.

You know,
I realize after hearing the Eddie Holland record that it's the very Funks instrumental track that WOMC uses to promote its Motown Mondays. That thing has been haunting me and now I've identified it! It's a faster version of it, but it's the same song.
OK see if any brain whizzes out there can guess which script I wrote for Phil Nye. It's a little offbeat which would be the clue...

Gary Lewis and the Playboys for coca-Cola! EEK!

Was it the one with the Waterford Bank Robber? Gary Lewis -- Count Me In ...

John --
re Psychedelic Shack, yeah Pat St. John came in at the end and said the Temptations had gone home some time ago, but the Funks were still playing! LOL ...
Radio as it was, and should be ...

Wilmer Alexander & the Jukes -- don't remember or recognize this ...

Vic -- you got it! I was looking at old microfilm and that gal just popped out at me. The five-time divorcee, 24, said she robbed banks because she was bored, and probably would do it again when she got out of prison. The photo of her was great, she looked like Lee Remick circa '60.
You can't make this stuff up.
Just to hear Phil Nye reading my words was ultra cool!

Eddie Floyd -- Bring It On Home!

Baby, Come Back -- The Equals, with lead singer Eddie ("Electric Avenue") Grant.

Karate by the Emperors! Wow!

Anyone in Detroit who isn't listening to this, is insane ...
Who on Soulful Detroit requested this one, I forget? Great choice. Pat and others are plugging the forum so much there'll probably be increased traffic here.

M'Lady from Sly!

What is the phone number?

Soupy, White Fang and Black Tooth! Pookie too! And Millie Small??

Sis, I suspect this is all prerecorded ...

They're only doing requests we already forwarded to the guys -- remember there was a thread on here a week or so back? I forwarded it -- it included several songs you wanted played, Sis. I know they're doing an all-request hour at 10 p.m. tonight with some SD requests, but I had no idea Pat was going to play some SD requests as well.

Ok Thanks Sue. I did put my request in at that time.

Seger -- Heavy Music part 2 (the flip side).. "NSU, SRC, Stevie Winwood got nothin' on me! (and he was right)

The Burger Club is about to convene ...

2 + 2 = ? -- it had to happen

Susan, they're talking about you ...

Yeah, cool. I've gotta get Pat to pronounce my name right! Scotty knows.

brief clip of Alan Freed as Scott and Pat talk about influential DJs

We're about to hear "Scott's on Swingers" as Scotty tells the background on it ...

Scott's On Swingers ...

How I heard it thru the grapevine came to be, with the Marvin Gaye version ...

Sue, how DO you pronounce your name? Is it "wit" or "white" - all?

Frank -- Long "i" not short ...
I'm used to hearing it all ways (laugh).
I love the story Scotty and Johnny Williams just told about the Tim Tam song being recorded the same day as Seger's "Heavy Music." Amazing ...

Some confused Detroiter is going to tune in, hear the ad and go to Warren just east of Greenfield seeking this "Gay Haven" club ...dancing in the big main room! Wow!

"Secret Agent Man" sounds to be the same musical track to "The Snake" by Al Wilson.

Love hearing Levi Stubbs urging us to join the Burger Club ...

how do you like your burger?

I'm loving this reparte. Big smiles from LA! Wish I was there.

Loved hearing Stevie Wonder sing "Uptight" along with his record!

It's Motown Monday - Scott singing with the Tops at the Roostertail!

Larry join right in! The only way this would be better, I told Scott Westerman, is if he and all the guys were here for a party while the broadcast was going on. Next time ...
So we're having an online party instead. What's cool is Scotty's voice sounds the same. Can't tell the vintage clips from today. That doesn't always happen.

That "Live at The Roostertail" "Where Did Our Love Go" sounded absolutely fantastic.

Yeah, ol' Diana is singing live, no studio tricks there.

Now I remember why I loved the Supremes back then.

Didn't Earl Van Dyke sound cool on that cut?!!

He sounded great. Also prominent were the horns.

((((((LEVI))))))

Susan Whitall, I heard your dedication.

Hey -- they just played Jim Feliciano's request, and mentioned him.
Now they're playing the Stratfords for Marshall C.

Sue and others...
It was great hearing WKNR again, including the commercials ("Saturday!...Saturday night!!...at Deroit Dragway!!!"). I especially enjoyed Scotty Regan relating so many "behind the mike" stories, such as Marvin's release of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" as compared with the version by Gladys and the Pips. Good Stuff. Certainly was a better time than listening to 1310's current line-up of conservative wackos.

Did you know who did those "Detroit Dragway" commercials?
Rube Weiss, father of David Weiss, aka David Was of Was (Not Was). Rube first did 'em with Joel Sebastian, later with Robin Seymour as the other yelling guy. I love it when he's yelling about the Swamp Rat! David once told me he remembers going to see his father tape those commercials, with Joel.

Hey Sue:
It is a Yellow Corvette and the waving was from my 6 year old. I thought her arm would fall off from how much waving she did. It took 2 1/2 hours to go from 11 miles to 15 miles. It was great fun. had Keener blasting and people would ask what station was that. Right infront of the WOMC broadcast booth on 14 miles we had about 25 cars all playing the mighty K.
Was a great time rain or shine.
