I have been playing the Stax So I Can Love you album and I know Shelia's voice but I'm having a little bit of trouble with Wanda and Jeannette. The liner notes say that Jeannette was the high end voice. I would love to be able to know the difference.

She sang lead on "When We Gonna Wake Up" from the 1981 "New Affair" LP. She also wrote the song.

Well all 4 ladies (Pam included) can sing soprano. On the So I Can Love LP, Jeanette sings lead on "It's not Fair,"Got to be The Man" & "Day Dream. Jeanette's voice is real smooth & silky. Back in the early 80's Sheila took a leave from the group, so Wanda, Jeanette & Pam Went on tour. This Is when the New Affair album was released with single "What's the Name of your Love". During that tour Jeanette sang all of Sheila's leads and got great reviews.

"It's Not Fair" sounds like Shelia to me. I always thought that "I Found My Man" was Jeannette. I also have the Untouched album with Teresa Davis and it seems that deep alto voice is gone. Also "I love the song "Blind Alley" and "Shouting Out Love" with Wanda on lead. I think the So I Can Love you and the Untouched albums are my favorites.

Jeanette is more of a floater and can blend in. Wanda's is more of a deep contrato. Shelia is the mezzo-sorprano. During their Stax/Volt days it was always Wanda (although her vox was much higher and more a of stylist of an lead)and Shelia.

Sheila is the lead on "So I Can Love You," she also wrote the song. Sheila lead most of their Stax/Volt sides. Wanda didn't really come into the picture as a lead until Maurice White started producing them.

Actually the leads seem to be split up pretty evenly on all of their Stax albums. I have So I Can Love You, Untouched and Sunshine. I just cant tell the difference between Jeanette and Wanda on the early stuff. Teresa does an excellent job on the song "I call this loving you".

You're right, Sheila sings lead to It's Not Fair" I got that confused with "I Found My Man"> I read in an interview Jeanette stated that she can duplicate Both Wanda & Sheila's voices. If you listen to "Don't ask my Neighbors" It's Jeanette & Sheila doing the "Oh I can see boy" not just Sheila doubelng herself. I just saw them last year in October and they were great. The lineup was Wanda, Pam & Sheila. I have several audio tapes of their shows and I must say that they still have it vocally.
