Barry White....Gregory Hines.....who's next? Not many of my faves left.

Oh My Goodness!

Just received this sad news for the first time, via this site. I'm shocked and saddened.

Another brilliant, individual talent will not see the likes of again. This is so sad, and real loss to the industry.

Peace & Blessings to family and many friends.

R.I.P. Brother.

No. Please, no.

One of my favorites of all time. When I first lived in Manhattan, all wide-eyed, he was the first celeb I saw on the street. I'll never forget - he could tell I recognized him and he nodded, mouthed hello and kept boppin' along. Later I went to see him in 'Sophisticated Ladies,' the Duke Ellington Revue on B'way, and wouldn't you know, I ran into him on the way to the theater - and he was smiling all the way, again...

Keep keepin', GH.

The duet with Luther was a fave of mine.

Stu, if I remember correctly his character in History of the World was "Samus Davus"

He was a fave of mine indeed and this news is shocking.

Top of pageBottom of page   By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Sunday, August 10, 2003 - 01:45 pm:

A couple weeks ago, I watched him on a video of the Sammy David Jr. special. Gregory gave Sammy homage and bowed to him.

Sorry SB, Stubass is just going to have to pull strings to get the special on DVD or either have someone make us a good copy.

What a shock to hear this. He and his brother were my all time favorite dancers. He was such an influence on the young tappers of today. This is truly a sad day, for all of his fans and family.

RIP

Stu & Company:
I heard the news on WINS-AM here in NYC - it was the station's top news headline.

First time I saw Gregory Hines was on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (1981) performing a tune from "Sophisticated Ladies" and tap dancing in the street (while wearing a long overcoat with a tux underneath - must've been really cold that day). My college years it was "White Knights","Running Scared",his duet with Luther Vandross ("There's Nothing Better Than Love") & his solo album (great record if you can find it) & he and Sammy Davis Jr. kicked a-- in "Tap".

His salute to Sammy before Mr. Davis passed was stellar.

Watching him with Savion Glover in "Jelly's Last Jam" was like seeing the old school & new school on one stage.

His work on TV's "Will & Grace" made us laugh.

The man had class...period.

Rest well, Greg...and make 'em dance in the heavens.

KEVGO!!!...IT'S ALSO QUITE COINCIDENTAL THAT YOU MENTION GREGORY HINES PARTICIPATION IN "JELLY'S LAST JAM"...FOR WHICH MUSICAL COMPOSER LUTHER HENDERSON DID THE MUSIC!!!...MR. HENDERSON PASSED ON THIS PAST WEEK AS WELL!!!...STUBASS

I remember seeing a special on tap on PBS years back.Mr.Hines was the host and all the legends that were still around came out and showed their distinctive styles.Cholly,Sandman,Nicolas Brothers and of course Gregory. Then he brought out his new discovery a very young Savion Glover and they both tore it up and left the boards in splinters!
A big shock,I had no idea he was ill.I hope there is a fittting tribute for him and a new ambasador of tap steps forward. : (

There's nothin' better than love
What in the world could you ever
Been thinkin' of

It's better by far
So let yourself reach for that star
And go no matter how far
To the one you love.

Morning All,

My bad. I meant to say that I saw Gregory in the "Waiting To Exhale", movie last week and not "Soul Food."

I was just too thru when I heard the news. I am still a little shook up. It is so surprising to hear such news when it catches one off guard like that.

Gregory was definitely the best Tap dancer of his day - and he loved his craft so.

Hey Bruce - STUBASS's Bro. If nothing else could you at least find out if that particular special is available for purchase? I would truly appreciate it. I would love to have that show featuring everyone that was there and performed - but especially the piece featuring Greg & Sammy.

How sweet it would be indeed.

Have a good one.

Top of pageBottom of page   By SB (205.186.130.198) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 07:26 am:

PS - Bruce. I meant that if your effort to find us a copy of the video fails - would you happen to know how one would go about trying to purchase one from the studio? Sorry for stating "If nothing else."

Btw - congratulations for what you did for that special. It was such a Special Special indeed.

Have a Blessed day.

Great Tap Dancer. That stutter step that he did was so smooth, and he made it look like there was nothing to it. Who will carry the tradition of tap dancing on?

A great,great hoofer without a doubt
who could definatly hold his own with anyone.
Saw various great footage of him with
Sammy Davis and also in 'Jellys Last Jam'
but what really did it for me was seeing him with another great hoofer called Jimmy Slide.
He always came across as a down to earth regular nice guy.
R.I.P. Gregory Hines.

mel.
