The most ludicrously titled song.

I'm listening to it right now.

It is magnificent.

Detroit's Jackie Wilson.

The flip is great too. "Since you showed me how to be happy".

I've been thinking of a classic double-sider thread.

This would be on it for sure.

I'm pretty sure "Since You Showed Me How To Be Happy" was the A-Side. It was a minor hit for Jackie. Never heard the flip.

Hi Scratcher

"Since..." is the A side.

The flip is one of the best sides ever. Please check it out.

There is not one recording that I didn't like by Jackie Wilson. All of his songs are great. That man could sing.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Scratcher (65.238.127.87) on Saturday, August 09, 2003 - 07:05 pm:

Listening now..."The Who Who Song" should have been the A-side. Brunswick goofed big time. "Since..." was ok but mundane. "The Who Who Song" is the Motown sound.

You wonder who picks the A-sides and what they were drinking that day...but really, often it's political, as to who wrote or produced the song and how much money is invested in the production.

"The Who Who Song" was produced by Carl Davis and arranged by Sonny Sanders. The session took place at Columbia Recording Studios in Chicago on September 15, 1967.

I have a nice blue uk demo of the 'who who song'
and when Jackie was on at the casino back in 75'
at that time I had just bought a nice us copy of it and it was one of my favourite dancers.
So all night I was waiting with anticipation for Jackie to sing the song, and unfortunatly he didnt,(to my recollection anyway)
But like everything hes done
what a record(and then some)

I remember hearing it for the first time on Radio 1, who were talking about Northern Soul. It was a programme that aired around 1976 and they played 'At Last/The Temprees', which is a fantastic number, bearing in mind some would associate it with Glenn Miller. I love that wacka wacka guitar at the beginning. Bobby, was that cut in Philly and was that you? They also played 'Reaching for something/The Marvelettes' and I had never heard any of these three songs before. I was blown away. It took me ages to get a copy of The Who Who Song (Mr Magic, that reminds me...).

If it was a 'b' side, it puts to shame some of the song constructions and hooks of today.

David Do you recall that the flip to Higher & Higher, `I'm the One to Do it` was played a lot around 68 - 72? Those tom-tom type drums that open it just make the hairs stand right up! Jackie appeared a couple of times in the UK but sadly the car I was in on the way to the Dungeon in Nottingham broke down & I missed him. `Haunted House`, `Soul Galore`, `Whispers`...he made so many beautiful sides. On `Soul Galore` it shows Hamilton as the song writer......hmmmm? Also there is currently a TV ad for YES car finance that has a fantastic version of `Sweetest Feeling` including an extended instrumental section. Keith

Keith - I reckon the commercial is a London re- make for the commercial. It is cheaper to do it that way, it seems. So, the talent is around, all it needs is a good song and a push...

"I'm the one to do it" was huge at the Twisted Wheel in 1970.

Thanks for reminding us of another great song.

And while we're at it anyone got info on "Just be sincere". dvdmike?

I have just finished re-reading the Jackie Wilson biog LONELY TEARDROPS (ISBN#1-86o74-214-9
Sanctuary Books}.What a life -what a man. When it comes to who wrote what,I think the labels did not tell all.His management sometimes got confused.Nuff said.Apparently he was very popular with the Italians.
Musically, he was great. One of my faves is"I,ve lost you"
Saw him on his seventies tour.He didn,t sing the songs I had hoped for-but he was there!!On stage right in front of me.!
A couple of years later the dee jay on the night
was discussing the show with me .I was going on a about the show and he said have this-his signed record sleeve!

Hey Folks:
"The Who Who Song" is also a favorite of this compilation producer/liner note writer.

It was written by Gary Jackson & Carl Davis, the same team that co-wrote "Since You Showed Me How To Be Happy" with Gerald Sims.

Other good Jackie B-sides from the Chicago soul era were "The Fairest Of Them All" (A-side "Whispers"), "Love Uprising" (A-side "This Love Is Real") & "The Fountain" (A-side "You Got Me Walking").

Regards,

David Meikle:
"Just Be Sincere" was recorded at Columbia Records' Studio on McClurg Court in Chicago on October 10, 1966 (the day after yours truly was born!). It was recorded along with a few other sides for the "Whispers" album.

Carl & Sonny were the producer & arranger. The Reed Brothers (Bernard & Daniel) wrote the song with Othie Wright.

It was also the B-side of "I Don't Want To Lose You", the follow-up of "Whispers (Getting Louder)".

Jackie Wilson - Quality shows, forever.

Any idea where Major Lance's pre-Nashville stuff was recorded for Okeh?

Would it be the same studio on McClurg?

Especially the mighty "Too hot to hold"

David

Top of pageBottom of page   By KevGo (64.115.26.80) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 10:40 am:

David:
Most of Major Lance's releases that were produced by Carl Davis were recorded at Columbia's McClurg Court studio in Chicago.

Prior to 1967, artists signed to CBS Records (Columbia, Epic, Okeh, Date) had to use a CBS studio for their recording sessions for various reasons (this was discussed last year among the Forum's engineers & myself). That changed when Clive Davis became president of CBS Records - he contracted work with studios such as Ralph's Terra Shirma (The Little Foxes' "Love Was Made To Order" was produced by Mike Terry for Okeh and was recorded at Terra Shirma) as well as producers such as Gamble & Huff, who used Cameo-Parkway's studio and later Sigma Sound.

Major Lance also recorded some Okeh sides at Columbia Music Row Studios in Nashville produced by Billy Sherrill.

"It's The Beat" was one of the sides Major Lance cut in Nashville under Sherrill's direction.

Billy Sherrill also produced singles for Peaches & Herb in the late 1960s.

Billy Jackson produced some Peaches & Herb tracks for Date at Hitsville in Detroit as well

Mel, "Lonely Life" which was the B-side of "I'm Comin' On Back To You" was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in NYC on May 22, 1961. "I'm Comin' On Back To You" was cut at the same session. Dick Jacobs produced the session and wrote the chart.
