THERE ARE SOME ARTIST THAT ARE JUST CONSISTENTLY BETTER LIVE THAN THEIR RECORDINGS. THEN THERE ARE THOSE THAT NO MATTER HOW WELL THEY SOUND ON RECORDINGS JUST CAN'T SEEM TO MAKE IT WORK LIVE NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES WE SEE THEM. WHO IS ON EVERYBODY'S BEST/WORST LIST ?

WELL NY DELL!!!...IF A STUDIO PUTS OUT A BAD RECORDING ON AN ARTIST...FORGET BLAMING THE ARTIST...BLAME THE PRODUCER!!!...STYLE PREFERENCE ASIDE...WITH ALL OF TODAYS SOPISTICATED RECORDING EQUIPTMENT...MOST ANYONE...WITH SOME MODICOM OF TALENT...CAN BE MADE TO SOUND GOOD!!!...IT'S ON LIVE PERFORMANCES...WITHOUT ALL THAT STUDIO "SOUND GOOD STUFF"...THAT MANY ARTISTS GET REVEALED FOR WHAT THEY ARE!!!...AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF THOSE!!!...SOME ARTISTS AND GROUPS ARE BASICALLY RECORDING GROUPS...AND DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING LIVE PERFORMANCES!!!...OTHERS...PACK THEIR LIVE PERFORMANCES WITH A MULTITUDE OF BACKGROUND SINGERS AND ADDITIONAL MUSICIANS WHO KNOW HOW TO PLAY TO TRY TO MAKE THEMSELVES SOUND GOOD LIVE!!!...STUBASS

STUBASS: DOES THAT APPLY TO VETERAN ARTIST WHO STILL RECORD ALSO OR JUST THE NEW-JACKS ? I BROUGHT THE LAST 1-2 CHILITE CD's SOUNDED PRETTY GOOD BUT WHEN I SAW THEM THIS PAST SPRING THEY SOUNDED UNBELIEVABLE I WAS SURPRISE TO JUST SEE FOUR VOCALIST ON STAGE, BECAUSE WHEN THEY MARCHED OUT SINGING "HAVE YOU SEEN HER" THEY SOUNDED LIKE THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR, DAMN IF THEY DIDN'T SOUND LIKE 100 PEOPLE DOING THAT HARMONY IN THE INTRO. NO WAY WAS IT JUST......."THEM"

WELL AT LEAST THEY DIDN'T *LOOK* LIKE THE MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR!!!...I DON'T KNOW THAT PARTICULAR SITUATION DELL...BUT AS HAS BEEN DISCUSSED HERE...SOME GROUPS EMBELLISH BOTH RECORDINGS AND LIVE PERFORMANCES WITH ADDITIONAL TALENT!!!...I WITNESSED AN ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCE MANY YEARS AGO...WHERE A SOUND TRACK WITH ADDITIONAL STRING INSTRUMENTS WAS PLAYED ALONG WITH THE LIVE PERFORMANCE!!!...SOUNDED GOOD...BUT WHEN IT BECAME PUBLIC...MANY OF THE CONCERTGOERS WANTED THEIR MONEY BACK!!!...STUBASS

I FIND THAT NO MATTER HOW GOOD LUTHER VANDROS SOUNDS ON RECORDINGS HIS LIVE SHOWS ARE UNREAL, BOTH HIM AND HIS BACKGROUND SINGERS SOUND SO NATURAL AND THEY JUST SEEM TO TURN THINGS UP A NOTCH, RECORDINGS DO HIM NO JUSTICE THE SAME WITH RUSSELL TOMPKINS JR. FORMERLY OF THE STYLISTICS AND CUBA GOODING SR. THEY BOTH BRING SO MUCH MORE LIVE, YOU CAN ACTUALLY HEAR THEIR PROFESSIONALISM AND EXPERIENCE

Ms. Marilyn Marshall is excellent live. She performs Hold On and Just Us Two with so much feeling, and the recordings just don't do her justice.

Mary J Blige and Aaliyah (RIP)---both sound good on their albums, but live is a totally different story. Live, Mary J. sounds tone deaf and Aaliyah just sounded kind of plain...I've heard Musiq live as well and he doesn't really do it for me either...and (just for fun) we all know about that whole Milli Vanilli thing...but again I guess it wasn't them anyway, live or in the studio, because when they actually made a record with their real voices, they sounded horrible!!!

MARY J. EVEN HAS HER MOMENTS ON RECORDINGS WHERE SHE SOUNDS TONE DEAF

Stu....
.....Turn up the echoplex enough to hide my diction (and turn down the volume to hide the rest of my voice), and even I sound, er, ok.
Admitedly these are rock acts, but Brownsville Station and J. Giles Band did not record in studio well, but their live shows were killer. James Cotton is another where the live energy does not transfer to studio tape.

EARTH, WIND & FIRE, KOOL AND THE GANG & PARLIAMENT ARE ALSO ACTS THAT NEVER DISAPOINT LIVE. AL JARREAU, ROBERTA FLACK ALSO. PATTI LABELLE IS A GREAT SHOWWOMAN SHE JUST SEEMS TO GO SLIGHTLY OVERBOARD AT TIMES LIVE, GREAT VOICE, SUPER RIFFS BUT A LITTLE VOCALLY OVER BEARING AT TIMES

Here's a slightly different take on what you've been observing :
Robert Palmer --- I was a fan since Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley came out in 1974.I bought all his albums through the 70's and early 80's.When he hit bigger in the mid-80's he got some TV exposure and he often, especially on ballads, came over as others have described MaryJ 'live' - big disappointment. However,I saw him 'live' at Earls Court(or somewhere big like that) at that time and he was awesomely assured vocally.Great concert and faith restored. He's appeared on TV many times and occasionally still sounds poor.Exceptions being 'real' music shows like Jools Hollands' 'Later'.I believe he's an example of an artist that knows that when he sings he contorts and physically strains while singing - he disn't look at all cool in the early 80's on TV.In concert - he didn't have those concerns(no video for Robert) and when he could hop up and down and do his best Joe Cocker impression, all his recorded vocal quality came shining through.....one of those things,I guess.
I'm off to bed.
It's getting late again here in hot,hot Londinium.
(Essex,actually)
