Medusa - LOL. You are too much. That is a great song. I've always enjoyed listening to that beautiful song.
I was thinking along those same lines last night when I was enjoying Frankie Beverly. :o)

Medusa,
My co-writer on LWLMW was VINNIE Barrett not Vonnie.
Vonnie is my fiance.
And yes, it would be nice to come with another one of those right about now.
When that song was first created, the effect it had on folks was not intentional.
We were just trying to write a song that sounded "old" like a standard that had been around a long time.
When I put on Barbara Ingram doing those moans and groans...well...that changed things a bit!!
By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 10:24 am: |
Ahhh the old :" moan and groan " ploy huh Bobby?
By Eli (152.163.252.68) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 10:34 am: |
Yup Ralph!!
Just be glad that it wasnt Paulie moanin' and groanin, otherwise it would have been a "stiff" capice??#$%^&*(

Eli - Were you on any of the OJay's songs? If so, which ones?
By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 10:40 am: |
Capice ??#$%/\&'(

Sis,
I was on ALL of the O'jays PIR stuff.
Name it..I was on it.
I loved playing on O'Jays sessions.
They were some of the few PIR sessions where the artist was present during the tracking date.
I could visualise them sitting on high stools running down Usta Be My Girl doing that "doo wop" thing!!
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 11:01 am: |
The Ojays were so good, I was kinda worried about the Temptations. I was told that after the Ojays performance, Eddie Lavert went down to Hart Plaza and woo'ed the crowd with his appearance.
By Eli (152.163.252.68) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 11:06 am: |
I would have to say that the O'jays recordings were probably my all time favorite sessions and allowed me to be my most creative.
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 11:20 am: |
The Ojays music is fantastic. All of the intos makes you want to jump up, and I did. Sometimes I try to be cool, considering my age, but then I say eff it, why not. :o)

I can't let this thread pass by without saying that knowing Barbara Ingram was a great blessing in my life. If she were here today (she is in spirit), she'd love this forum. I met her in the early 80s when the Sweeties worked with Patti LaBelle. It was a while before I knew that was her voice on Love Won't Let Me Wait. My reaction??? "WHAT did your father say?????" LOL
RIP, Babs!!
By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 11:24 am: |
Linda Di - LOL. What was her response?
By Eli (152.163.252.68) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 12:29 pm: |
Linda,
Barbara, as well as all of the Sweeties were fun in the studio.
They came in to work but some of us an edge with them being friends as well such me and my late wife.
They were simply the greatest.
Barbara's passing is still a shock to me and remains shrouded in mystery till this day.
By Linda Di. (66.67.194.109) on Sunday, August 03, 2003 - 12:54 pm: |
I don't remember exactly what Barbara said, but whatever it was, it had to be funny. She had a great (and sarcastic) wit. Her dad was a minister, and her parents' influence on me was the reason I went back to church after many years of being a FARC (fallen away Roman Catholic). They have both passed. I owe them much.
Barbara had suffered with lupus for many years. Regardless of her illness, her death was still a shock. However, God is good. She's surely singing in His choir now.

Medusa,
Angel sister you are forgiven, it was a natural mistake. Vinnie and Vonnie are only a difference in vowels. I told Bobby when I read your post that I thought you had Vinnie and I mixed up, so I told him to let you know. I want to give all the props that are deserved and rightfully belong to my angel sister Vinnie. Vinnie is a beautiful and talented person as well as a wonderful friend.
Peace and Joy
Vonnie

Medusa,
I forgot to add, watch it Angel sister, you might wind up with a little Cherub flying around(LOL). You can get into big trouble listening to certain songs! I know, that is what happens to me when I listen to Barry White's "Practice What You Preach".

Sis,
Remember I told you Bobby E. was on all the stuff we were hearing at the show.
O'Jays were great. I loved seeing them stepping ...and their bassist had the "For the Love of Money" riff down ...

Bobby,
Yet more Philly related questions.....
What can you remember about the following Philly artists; Don Gardner, Dean Courtney and Herb Ward ??
ALSO can you recount any stories about Dexter Wansell who you must have spent many hours alongside in the studio and outside.

Did you hear Major Harris sing "Love Won't Let Me Wait" on the live 70's Soul Jam CD's with the Delfonics, Stylistics, Dramatics, Chi-Lites, and Harold Melvins' Bluenotes with Sharon Paige. He was at the Dell East in Philly last Monday to see Bobby Womack.
Eli....Are you gonna do anything new on him or Blue Magic

Bobby,
the Herb Ward track that is most popular in the UK is / was "Honest to Goodness" (released on RCA). This Philly cut was produced by Tom Bell
in 67 but Herb also had 45's on Argo, All Brothers & Buddy.
Do you know any of his work ???
By JSmith (212.39.231.20) on Tuesday, August 05, 2003 - 02:04 am: |
ALSO.........
Dean Courtney (anuva Philly guy) but one who mainly recorded in NY (for RCA, MGM, etc) cut a Leon Huff / Len Barry song "I'll Always Need You" that became very popular in the UK.
Dean made it over here to perform a couple of years back but had the misfortune for his 'main' show to clash with the 1st UK performance by that MIGHTY MIGHTY group (the Dells of course). So not too many people got to see his full performance (he did put in a brief appearance at the Dells venue though).
The song he cut, that I mentioned earlier, was also cut by it's writer Len Barry but I sdon't think I have heard his version.
