"Dancing In The Street" by Martha & The Vandellas was released on this day, July 31, 1964, 39 years ago today. Written by Marvin Gaye, Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter and produced by Stevenson and released as Gordy single 7033, the song spent 14 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 and peaked at #2. It was their biggest pop hit. I don't have any info on the session date or the arranger, but with all these great minds on the forum, I hope someone out their can shed some light.

To me that is the "Call to Arms" of my generation...I still get that special feeling when I hear that song, like bold, soul,we will overcome! One of the greatest groups of all time, the greatest band, the greatest writers/producers.

my #1 favorite Motown record that I never get tired of hearing. I remember Pistol Allen telling me that they(musicans on it)considered it a " garbage " record. I said to myself that garbage can be good sometimes.

What's that old cliche,"One man's junk is..."

If Pistol Allen & the Funks considered it a "garbage" record, it's the most golden of the bunch!

I have two copies of the 45 - one that was played to death (yes, the vinyl is turning white)and another I can still spin.

Thank you Martha Reeves, the Vandellas, Mickey Stevenson, Marvin Gaye & Ivy Jo Hunter for giving us a masterpiece.

"Calling out around the world...."
